Solid. «Bomb-It» for double the meat for a few extra bucks. One sub is enough for two. Personally for me, it’s Cheese Steak w/no sauce or onions, mayo only, bomb-it. So freakin good. Not a 5 star restaurant, but who wants that in a Hoagie stand.

I’ve been to the port hueneme location many times and the food and service is always great. Let me say I will NEVER go back to this Ventura location. The hoagies were pretty cold, wrong bread I had ordered wheat, and fries were hard as rocks since it was the end of the night I’m assuming this was last batch and oil was old. I called restaurant and owner answered And said i had to put fries in a plastic bag to prove i didn’t eat them and he would then replace them. He gave me a big lecture about how people say that but they eat it anyway and then want free food. I spent $ 50 on 4 hoagies pretty sure I can afford fries without asking for freebies. I won’t return. Do yourself a favor and go to port hueneme location.

Solid overall. Went to another location a while back and wasn’t impressed. Tried this location today and was pleasantly surprised with how good their cheese steak really was. The meat was tender, juicy with no fat or gristle whatsoever. Will definitely be back. Highly recommended. The only complaint was how long it took. From order to when I finally got the sandwich took close to 20 minutes… and it wasn’t even that crowded.

One star too many for this hole in the wall! Rude people and terrible food. Yuck eww! stay away! save your money. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and was only served with over cooked steak and eggs and underneath was a soggy half piece of bread. It’s so hard to find a good to-go breakfast place, but just starve and save your money. This place should just be knocked down and the freeway entrance should widen! Ugh health department where are you!

Not the best cheese steak I’ve had but it was ok. I’ve lived in Ventura for 2 years now and have been wanting to try this the whole time. I wan not very impressed with the cheesesteak, it was probably the tomato sauce that I guess comes on everything here. IF I try it again it will be with no tomato sauce for sure. A lot smaller then I’m use to when it comes to Phillies. Overall the steak was good so 3 stars, love the pickles and lots of them. Also she said theres peppers in the bag and there was none, not cool man.

The sandwich came out really fast and it’s nothing special. Even though there are many Ingredients in my pepper mushroom cheese steak sandwich, it tastes pretty bland. The location of this shack is questionable and the inspection report on display is out of date and has a dead mosquito stuck to it…

I have been to this place once before and they have good food… but the the place is run down, decades of dust, and old. The menu letters and words were so over grown with grease and dust bunnies. Not the best impression for a place serving food. I came in, no one was there, no cooks, no customers, no service. as I waited this is when I really noticed all the unpleasantness around me so… I left! I suggest a deep cleaning, fixing broken/worn out things. I know times are tough and that’s why I did not give you less than 4 stars because I know Mean Unilocalers can ruin businesses. I am only trying to help! Good luck, I will not return.

First time visit. My husband and I split a steak and a pastrami. I thought the pepper mushroom steak hoagie was great but I did leave out the tomato sauce after reading other reviews and tips. The pastrami was with mustard and pickles only. It was a good quality not greasy or fatty . Fries were really good too. An order is more than enough to share. Overall, we will definitely come back. I will ignore that the owner scolded me when I asked him to read my order again for me.

There are quite a few things that make this place less then stellar. First, lists discuss location. This shack is on a very busy street. There is only outside seating. The neighborhood also happens to be home to a large homeless population. So, even if the street happens to be quiet(it rarely is), the chances of getting through your meal without an interruption are slim. Next, let’s talk about the service. As others have mentioned, we were hassling trying to use the debit card. After we had ordered and paid, you very brashly told us not to go anywhere. We just ordered food, where are we going to go? Once we got our food, my boyfriend asked for ketchup, and was given it, only after promising to return it when we were done. We specifically came out looking for a Philly cheesesteak, and let me tell you, if you are in the mood for a good, traditional Philly cheesesteak, go somewhere else. The bread was soggy. The meet was really fatty and full of gristle. The cheese was confusing: it wasn’t cheese whiz, but it wasn’t sliced cheddar either. The onions on mine were overcooked, and even though my boyfriend ordered his without onions, there were still a few interspersed in the meet. The habit is just down the street. If you’re looking for a good quick bite, I would suggest going down there.

I’ve been wanting to check this place out for awhile, but hadn’t been able to. It’s definitely a hole-in-the-wall type place so, if you’re looking for something more than that, this isn’t your place.(Kinda like Oki-dog In Hollywood vibe). GOODGRUB/FAIR PRICES. Had the mushroom pepper cheese steak with mayo, instead of marinara sauce, and loved every bite! If the opportunity presents itself again, I’ll definitely be back. Hell, I might even try a sandwich with marinara! MANGA! MANGA!(Italian for eat! eat!, not Japanese graphic novels!)

Great cheesesteak! I’m surprised so few ratings, this place has been around over 30 years and always great. Just a few outdoor tables, but most take orders to go. To be honest I haven’t tried anything else there but imagine it’s good.

I’ve been a fan of Great Central for many years so I suppose it’s time to give it some Unilocal luv. With a good selection of sandwiches Great Central has something on the menu to satisfy almost anyone. The hot pastrami, meatball, and pizza subs are excellent options and are always made fresh to order. For me, my money is always best spent on the cheese steak, hold the marinara sauce! In terms of portions, the sandwich will definitely fill you up and might be big enough for 2 especially if you go «bomb»(double meat and cheese). The ingredients used in the sandwiches are excellent but the bread is super underrated. Not sure what it is but the bread they use is perfect for hoagies and subs. So enough about the sandwiches. The fries! Oh those fries… Probably the best fries in Ventura county and possibly the best fries I’ve had recently. Keep in mind, these fries have no frills. They are simply fresh cut, skin on, thick cut(but not wedges), not over fried, with just the perfect amount of salt. That’s it! If you come here for only the fries you will not be disappointed! No this isn’t Philly but Great Central Steak & Hoagie is rep’n a STRONG cheese steak in my opinion.

My wife and I were recently in Ventura and looking for some lunch. Naturally, we consulted the Unilocal mobile app to peruse the list of nearby eating establishments. The Great Central Steal & Hoagie place caught our eyes. Could they possibly have cheese steaks and would they be any good? The reviews said that it was true, so naturally this is the place we chose for our lunch. It is just a corner stand with no indoor seating(just like Geno’s and Pat’s in South Philadelphia). There are a few very worn picnic tables outside. Order at the window and then it is cooked to your specifications. Then go somewhere and eat it. Since my wife did not like the look of the old tables and benches, we sat in our car to eat. Unfortunately at that time, due to a temporary medical issue, I was unable to eat cheese. Would it be possible to have a cheese steak without the cheese? Such an unthinkable possibility! They were up to the challenge. I had a cheese-less steak, with mushrooms and grilled onions. It was very good!(I know that it would have better with cheese, but is was still good without the cheese, which means that the steak, mushrooms, and onions were cooked to delicious perfection). Next time I’m in the area, I will be able to try it again with cheese. My wife had a normal cheese steak with grilled mushrooms, along with tomato sauce. She said that it was delicious. The sandwiches were $ 8 each. Good value. We will be back when we are again in Ventura around lunch time.

Steak and hoagie is the Philly cheese steak place!!! I have gone here a thousand times. ******************************************************* PROS: –Good food –Especially the cheese steak sandwich –Staff really gets to know you –FRIESARESERIOUSLYTHEBOMB –Ask for them crispy –Make your sandwich«The Bomb» with double meat ******************************************************* CONS: –messy; I don’t know if it’s for decoration but the storage is out in the open –Salads aren’t salads; trust me just don’t order it –Picky eaters might not enjoy ******************************************************* My Advice: –I have been coming to Steak and Hoagie for years and I really enjoy the food! The staff gets to know you well which is really nice. Picky eaters might not like. or vegetarians. Kids are welcome just as they would be is most restaurants but if they are picky their kids meal options are a corn dog or chicken nuggets. I would recommend to get the cheese steak with crispy fries and onion rings!!! If you enjoy sandwiches you will be all over this sandwich spot!!! *Enjoy your yummy cheese steak &fries!* ;P

Stopped with some coworkers for quick bite after a training seminar at the Ventura convention center. Great cheesesteak, and some awesome fresh cut fries. Definitely a place I’ll revisit during my road trips down the 101.

Been coming here since I can remember. Always excellent! My favorite is Pepper, Mushroom, Cheese, Steak and of course a fry to share.
