Banfield Pet Hospital

We went here about 10 times in 2015 with our dog. I waited some time so I could write a fair and objective review with constructive feedback.
On the upside: the staff were all pretty nice and most of the vets seemed pretty competent and personable (e.g., Dr Lackey). The place is very clean and it is easy to get through on the phone. Prices for procedures and tests were not overpriced.
On the downside: Annoying up front sales pitch. It’s hard to get urgent care appointments especially on weekends. Really hard, we had to go to another hospital to be seen on a weekend. No continuity of care by the vets for an illness, we saw someone different every visit for an illness which unfortunately ended tragically. The end result would probably have been the same even if we had seen the same vet, but we didn’t always feel that they were really listening to our concerns or had good coordination between the vets.
There is more upside than downside to this place. The staff and vets are OK and the facility is fine. Most of the problems like appointment access, continuity of care, and communication skills are fixable problems. They are management/​system problems not people problems. Our previous vet had a 2 person practice which is what we are used to. We will look for a smaller practice for our next dog. It didn’t work for us, but it probably works for many others.

I have been taking my dog to Banfeild for years but yesterday was my first time taking him to this location. If it is a regular check up, then they typically have you drop your pet off in the morning and will call you in the afternoon with a pick up time. I dropped my dog off at 7 AM and there was no wait to get him in (sometimes there can be a wait). I received a call around 2:30 that everything had gone well and that my dog would be ready at 4:30.
When I went to pick him up, there was a long line. They must have told everyone that their pet would be ready at 4:30! This isn’t the first time that this has happened to me and it is frustrating when I had the whole day off so I could have gone at anytime to pick him up.
The staff when I dropped him off and when I picked him up were both very friendly and helpful. I especially appreciated that one of the staff spent about 10 minutes going over everything that was found during the examination instead of just handing me the papers with the information on it. She also helped with recommending medicine that may be beneficial for my older dog to start taking.
Overall, I have had good experiences with Banfeild. I wish they would work on their drop off and pick up times though. From other reviews, it looks like many people have problems with there being long wait times for pick up and drop off.

Wait in seat for an hour! The store wasn’t crowd. The front desk girl and another girl just mopped around and mopped right front of us which make us feel uncomfortable. Even worse I saw them both talking and joking around. How hard work they can be while we re sitting and waiting?! We canceled them and left. We decided to go another vet. Never go back to this one.

I had an 8AM appointment for my dog recently. It was a simple comprehensive exam and I had made my appointment well in advance. When I got there, there was a long line to the front desk which I understand. Something I didn’t understand is that there was one woman working it. There were numerous other Banfield employees walking around so I was a little confused why dropping off my dog took 25 – 30 mins. Once it was my turn, there was little communication between myself and the employee. She seemed cold and unhappy to be there. She muttered that they would call me later that afternoon. I’m not a vet or a vet assistant but I was again confused as to why this simple routine check-​up and a few shots would take all day, but ok.
I will say again that I dropped him off at 8am and around 4:45PM, I had heard nothing from Banfield. So, I called them and they mentioned that «they were just about done with him“and to arrive around 5:30 to get him. I might come off impatient but when I arrived well after 5:30 because of Portland traffic, I then had to wait another 20 – 25 minutes just to get my dog. If he was just about done why would it take that long to get him? Finally once I got to speak to a vet that was when I decided I was never stepping foot in this this Petsmart/​Banfield Hospital again. She was rude and she told me one of her assistants accidentally had given my dog a shot that I did not want. It wasn’t anything harmful but I’m not sure how this could happen. I can’t even remember what her excuse was. She then had the audacity to ask me when I didn’t choose to consent to give it to him in the first place. Ummm ok, that’s a personal choice of mine. I was just relieved it wasn’t anything that could harm him. She then recommended my boyfriend and I that we brush his teeth every other day. Once my boyfriend came back with a toothbrush and toothpaste kit, the vet recommended we use Banfield’s exclusive brand. My boyfriend mentioned that he had not seen that on the shelves and the vet rudely said something along the lines of, «well that’s because we have it stocked in the back, duh.» It was just a little surprising. Everything she had said from then on was arrogant. I want to believe that when I leave my dog in the hands of animal professionals that it is safe and I can rely on them. This is not the place.
Fortunately I have taken my dog to other Banfield locations and they were completely the opposite of this experience. They were helpful, kind and reliable. I will be taking to another location.

This Banfield is the worst I have ever been to. I have been here 3 times with my puppy and the last two times, I scheduled my appointment and it couldn’t be found in the system. The front desk person Stacee said she scheduled my appointment when I made it and when I get there weeks later, the appointment was never made. When I pointed out the mistake both times, she acted like I was wrong, like I was wasting her time and acted like I was bothering her. I was never given as much as a sorry or even a way to fit my puppy in to get the shots she needed. Her customer service is poor and I will never be going back.

For me in my house our pets are our children. So when you are faced with a difficult decision you want to feel like your veterinary team truly cares. I have to say that the service that we got at Banfield was second to none.
When we received the heartbreaking news that our 9 week old puppy had Parvo, they handled the entire situation as if it were their own puppy. Directing us and providing all the information we needed to make the best financial and effective decision we could. The entire team was so supportive! From the gals at the front to Ric our vet tech (truly amazing guy). Doctor Gilhooly was great it felt like she was treating her very own puppy.
I can not say enough good things about them. Thank you all so much for what you do! Keep up the incredible job and Beau will see you soon!

They get you in and out quickly now! Always have someone at the front and instead of long waits to talk to a vet, they actually are waiting for you when you go into the room! I hope they keep it up. Banfield listens to their customers

I did one of their basic wellness plans when my dog was a year old. I wish I would have done the puppy one, it would have saved me a couple hundred. All the veterinarians here have at least a decade or two of experience (or at least all the ones my dog saw) What I love about this place the actual vet does all the vaccinations! They answered every concern & question I had (there was a lot of what ifs) They tell ya about natural remedies that work for your furry friend.
My Baby girl hates the vet, both the vet & vet tech took time with her to try & calm her down. I always felt like she was in great hands!
Also have them trim your nails here. They do a much better dog then the groomers in PetSmart.

Tired of the manipulation & the upsell! Too bad, they used to be great. They JUST noticed an abnormality on Pixies head, that she’s had since BEFORE we got her. *shakes head*

Disappointed. Recently moved here from another State and thought we would give Banfield a try as it was close to our home. On our first visit we were given the «Sales Pitch» and purchased their Optimum Wellness Plan. Have we saved money by purchasing this «Wellness Plan» YES I can admit. BUT I do not feel the care I have received compared YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Plus they are ALWAYS trying to upsell you on something. My advice, find a real clinic where staff actually care you about your pet. Where the Doctors are knowledgeable and can actually assist you with your pets needs. The staff here does not communicate and typical response «it wans’t me».

I went here one Sunday for one of my cats who had an eye infection. I didn’t want to wait until Monday for my Vet to be open or go to an ER Vet, which would have cost a fortune. Luckily, the Banfield Pet Hospitals around Portland have amazing weekend hours! There is one (the «Portland» location) that is open until 9PM on Sunday night. That’s crazy and awesome! Serious kudos there.
We went in, happened to get a free visit because we were new customers, and got out with some eye drops — which were reasonably priced. The staff was great as well! They were extremely attentive to my needs and got my cat checked out quickly.
One kind of cool thing is they offer pet plans, where you get a certain amount of vet visits and medical care for a fixed price yearly. It actually wasn’t a bad deal considering you get vaccines, a few vet visits and some other medical treatments for a fixed rate yearly. It ended up not being cost-​effective to me… but it could be a great plan for some people.
