Cute little ice parlor with many, many ice cream flavors and creations, along with a variety of sandwich’s. I will be back again.

valpo velvet everywhere… so no one wants to compete with valpo velvet as it is served at every single restaurant we visited on our mini-vacay to the dunes. rightfully so, it’s delish. i get so excited when i find cherry ice cream SANS chocolate. this was THE best i’ve had. scoops are generous, the people are friendly(both in line and behind the counter) and it just has a great small town vibe.

Such a neat little place tucked into Valparaiso. The ice cream is wonderful and with numerous flavors to choose from. The soup and sandwiches are very good. I absolutely love going there!

First off, Ice-Cream is ok, nothing special. Like that there is a place in Valpo that makes its own ice-cream. Décor is fun, but could use some cleaner floors and tables cleaned off once in a while. U PAY based on Weight!!! very weird considering they make it… Go to Shermans in Michigan and u will get 10 times more for your $. Would like to give it 2 ½ stars.

9 dollars for 2 single scoops, one of which had hot fudge. RIPOFF. Back in New York where I lived, at Stewarts shop you could get two hot fudge sundaes for 8 dollars. I can’t believe people pay so much for this ice cream that is mediocre at best. seriously. We need another ice cream shop in Valpo with cheaper prices and better tasting ice cream to start some competition.

Excellent homemade ice cream and hand-dipped frozen yogurts, as well as quality deli sandwiches and other food items. If you request a sandwich grilled, however, tell them to go easy on the butter(or to eliminate it altogether).

I’m a huge ice cream fan and have been looking forward to checking out Valpo Velvet. I’m glad that I had the chance to experience it. As others have noted, the atmosphere and decorations are charming. The whole place has a very quaint, down-home feel, and it would be worth going once just to see it. The service was also positively delightful. The server that helped me was friendly, attentive, and eager to please. The Salty Caramel/Aztec Chocolate Sundae that she created for me was delicious. I was a bit confused, though, on pricing. My sundae came with 2 scoops of ice cream, butterscotch syrup, hot fudge, whipped cream, and a cherry and cost only $ 5.35(incl. tax). My husband got 2 scoops of ice cream with fudge, and his treat was only 20 cents less than mine. Mine was definitely the better deal! Overall, the ice cream was good. It wasn’t the most fantastic ice cream that I’ve ever had in my life, but it was good. I’m glad that I went, and I would tell anyone in town to check it out at least once.

I recently moved here from California and was looking to explore downtown valpo. After passing by I thought I’d finally try this cute looking ice cream shop. I wasn’t greeted or acknowledged when I walked in but to be fair the young girl behind the counter was nice enough when she took my order. They have so many options it’s a bit overwhelming and the menu seems to be kinda all over the place with ice cream flavors then soups and sandwiches then back to floats and other desserts. I asked the girl if their cookies were fresh as part of a cookie sandwich. At first she seemed confused as to what I was talking about until I pointed to some of the cookie sandwiches they had displayed. The ones in the display window didn’t look all that appetizing so I asked if they had any fresh ones so that it could partly melt the ice cream. She went to the back to ask an older woman who was wearing an apron, possibly one of the owners. That woman came out and said all the cookies are frozen and said they wouldn’t be warm unless she’d just made them which she doesn’t know why anyone would want a warm cookie with ice cream anyway. And she walked away shaking her head and rolling her eyes. I was like alright then. I proceeded to order two scoops of ice cream in a cup. The ice cream was good. Nothing special. This place is decent at best. I was very disappointed with the lack of customer service I encountered. Not sure if it’s because I’m not white and I wear a scarf or just because they simply don’t care enough to expand their customer demographic. No real motivation to come back.

This place is day trip worthy. What a cool looking place so visually exciting and an excellent product to boot. I will have to start tying this into my Franklin House forays. I was intrigued because a couple people in front of me were just ordering food and not ice cream so I bet that is good also. I put it on my NWI top ten list.

I read a couple of the negative reviews about this place and I can’t say I agree with them at all. This is a little hidden gem of a spot! Takes you back to the 1950’s. I just stopped in for the first time today(5÷19÷15) and had a 2 scoop sundae with peanut butter cup and chocolate almond ice cream topped with peanut butter and fudge… Freaking(since I can’t curse) delicious! Some people complained about their prices but, you’re going to pay about the same for dairy Queen and at least here you get real ice cream! So stop in and give this place a visit. I’m glad I did today. I hear their sandwiches are good too. I’ll have to try one during my next visit.

This place is everything you want out of a small town, local and quirky experience. The walls are drenched in color, saturated with dairy themed artwork and poetry, the chairs are each painted to represent an ice cream flavor. I’m sad my little one is too old to chase all over the store matching the chairs to the ice cream. I know that I wanted to! The service here is friendly and genuine. I had a nice conversation about local boy done good MLB pitcher Jeff S(see photo) with one of the employees. And although it seems like I posted a lot of poetry photos – tip of the iceberg, people. Go see for yourself. Did we have ice cream? Yes. We did have ice cream. Although I wanted to try the freakishly colored Superman(has a chair), I went with Aztec Chocolate topped with butterscotch, whipped cream and a cherry, served in a glass dish. Little one had a waffle cone with some non-chocolate flavor(why bother??). The Aztec hints at a subtle heat, it’s a slow burn. Not much, but my mom would have hated it. They are generous with tasting spoonfuls, so try before you buy. We walked the two blocks from the town square, but they do have street parking. There’s a full menu of food as well. Next time. Because I will be back!(PS-the ice cream was excellent!)

Charming. Just so quaint! This place has such a laid back, familial vibe. It’s really great. The outside is painted with a sky blue background, and has cows on it to resemble a farm. It’s such a cute place to bring kids. I brought my little sister here over the summer and she loved it! I’m not gonna lie – I come here even on my own too. It’s not just for kids and families! Oh, and they have more than ice cream, too! Inside, they have different types of sodas, froyo, sherbet and sandwiches! The staff is always friendly and helpful. I love how this place is family owned and operated. It makes me want to go there even more, to support an awesome local business. Great spot!

This place is ok. Don’t get me wrong-it’s not gross. The location is clean and the employees are generally friendly. The place is decorated really cute. The thing I don’t understand is what everyone makes such a fuss over. The ice cream is OK – just OK. Nothing special… plus, it’s not cheap. It’s sort of pricy. If I want to spend that sort of money, I would like to spend it on unique flavors so I would go to Pat’s on Lincolnway. Don’t get me wrong… there’s nothing horrible about this place. I just don’t get what all the hoo-ha is all about.

The best ice cream ever made. Ever. It’s pulling teeth to only walk out of this place with 1 scoop, but today I found the newest, best flavor I have ever eaten: Chocolate frosted cake batter. *Uhhhhhhh…* So, good. Come for lunch, stay for ice cream. No truer words were ever said.

Great ice cream place but expensive. The order line is right in the middle of all of the tables so that can be an issue when the place is full. They have outdoor seating which is nice. This is a place you take visitors in Valpo.

We had Valpo Velvet pegged a few years ago but they were closed upon arrival. Their high reviews nudged me to settle an open account. I settled in with a waffle cone piled with a scoop of coffee espresso oreo fudge(yes, this is one flavor) and salty caramel(a new addition to their arsenal). The coffee mix was disappointing as the ice cream itself was on the cusp of freezer burnt frozen. No joke, I had a hard time cutting into it with my thumb on the edge of a plastic spoon. The salty caramel made up for that, and then some. Swathes of caramel in a perfectly salted caramel ice cream… this one was perfection. My son had the birthday cake ice cream, which was excellent. My wife had the very tasty mint oreo frozen yogurt. All in all we I’m glad we stopped in.

BEST. ICECREAM. EVER. The texture of their ice cream is perfect and most of their flavors are delicious with pumpkin being especially good. As a big cheesecake fan, I was excited to try their cherry cheesecake flavor which was surprisingly gross. I would come here more often if they had a drive-through and sometimes their staff is squirrelly and unfocused and sometimes they are amazing(depending on who you get.) A few few weeks ago I heard an employee yelling at another which is always uncomfortable. Overall, if you like quality, hand dipped ice cream, this is the place for you.

Slap my cone and call me randy, that was the creamiest ice cream I’ve ever had. The banana chocolate chip was unreal, so was my girlfriends vanilla milkshake and the sample of the yogurt mint chocolate. They have plenty of healthier desert options and they even have an awesome looking sandwich selection ill have to try next time I stop in.

Growing up and into my adult years, I’ve gone to my share of family owned ice cream places… for those local, places like Gertie’s and Cunis come to mind. These days I might add Oberweis to that group(although they are more regional than local to Chicago). So recently I was in Valpo and had wanted to try Valpo Velvet ice cream. I see their product all the time at the grocery store but had never tried it. I found the place and walked in to a small store/restaurant and after a few minutes placed my order for a shake with one of their many flavors they had to offer from one of their friendly employees. Needless to say when I got the shake(with a smile of course!) I sat down slipped my straw into the glass and lo and behold enjoyed a smooth and tasty shake… good to the last drop. They have a great product in a hidden location in small-town USA… may they never stop what they do… and hey by the looks of the restaurant they serve sandwiches and other goodies here too as well as outdoor seating… perfect place to go on that leisurely day in the middle of summer. Yes their prices may be a bit high, but they are not as bad as some of the chain ice cream shops.

Valparaiso doesn’t have much street lights beyond Garfield Avenue. Even so, my roommate and I would still walk from campus to Valpo Velvet for some good, homemade ice cream. It’s a good 15 – 20 minute walk in the darkness but how can one say no to gourmet ice cream? I’ve tried the mango sherbert, cherry cheesecake, and pistachio flavors as well as their sundaes. I especially enjoyed the mango sherbert but they were all very delicious!
