Mount Calvert is an active archaeological excavation site located in Prince George’s county. Artifacts from the Native American pre-European era have been found as well as artifacts from later periods. Additionally, Mount Calvert/Charles Town was witness to the British invasion of Maryland during the War of 1812. The Federal style brick plantation house is the last building still standing at the site of Charles Town, the first county seat. The tour is self-guided, which is great because you can really spend the time to look at and appreciate the architectural details. Of particular interest is the initials and names scratched into a window pane by prior residents. The scratchings, particularly the names with entwined hearts below them, reinforce the idea that real people lived in that house. Both the excavation site and the house are open Saturdays from April through October. It’s one of the few historic sites that can be accessed via road and via water(it’s on a crest of the Western Branch of the Patuxent River).
