Good food. Line is LONNNNNG more likely than not. Service moderately paced. The sourdough bread and butter is good. The queso artichoke dip is also good. Finally the steak frites is a good choice for a cheaper flank steak. MAC&CHEESE is phenomenal and cheesy and great. Recommend.

First, I want to share the fact that I don’t post many times on Unilocal. But when I do, there’s a good reason behind. To save you time from reading this post, the short story is that you have to go to this specific location for amazing J Alexander’s food. The head chef at this location knows what he/she is doing, everything that we ordered was mouth watering To begin, our waitress was phenomenal. We ordered the shrimp tacos, mahi mahi tuna salad and the shrimp caprese. Everything was incredible, highly recommend the shrimp tacos! Then, we ordered coffee and the carrot cake everyone raves about. To my surprise, the coffee came out in a French press! Those who are coffee drinkers know that coffee from a French press compared to a traditional pot is completely different! The coffee was incredible and the carrot cake was perfect! Highly recommend J Alexander’s in Troy, MI!

Just drove to Js after my daughters graduation, and met with the worst customer service ever. Completely empty restaurant the three girls up front were picking and choosing who they would sit. Not one of them willing to accommodate. The manager was less than helpful. I know they don’t care but they lost five regular customers.

I love this place! I was so sad when they took away the rattlesnake pasta but no fear because it’s back! I just wish they had kept the dark intimate atmosphere like before. The whole place has been update since I was last there and the whole place is now filled with booths.

First of all, love the recent updates on the restaurant over the last year. Definitely made it feel more«high end». I frequent this restaurant often for drinks and appetizers, especially over Christmas shopping time. My go to drink is the lemon drop martini. My favorite appetizers are the calamari and spinach con queso. The calamari has the perfect amount of breading on it, easily my favorite calamari dish I have tried to date. Any given time, this restaurant has an hour, to two hour wait, so you will want to do call ahead seating. I recently had a bad experience with this here. A friend and I did call ahead seating, were told 45 minutes, Show up 45 minutes later and told about an hour. Sure, whatever. We stood at the high top bar area and had a glass of wine and chatted. Hour in half goes by, and we are still not called. So I go up there, she tells me we were told 90 minutes, which we were not. We wait another half hour, then leave. Come to find out, they lost our call ahead card. They were not accommodating to us being unhappy and waiting for two hours when originally told 45 minutes. I have no been back to this restaurant since then.

Our go to place for a nice lunch/dinner. Food is always good. Usually get the Thai salad with a side of Not your ordinary mac and cheese. You must get the Mac and cheese. Service is always great. Love the consistency.

This was my second time at J Alexander’s and it was just as memorable as the first! It is a little bit of a splurge but it is definitely worth it! The first time I had the steak and NTO Mac and cheese, which was amazing. The fries here are a MUST, they are absolutely delicious! When I went the second time I had the crispy chicken platter, and it was so yummy. The honey mustard they serve for dipping is soooo good! It came with coleslaw and fries, so plenty of food. The service is amazing, our drinks were always full, even before we finished the last. This is my fav place to go while shopping at Somerset!

This place is so physically hot it was literally 80° and I was on a first date with an amazing woman and literally could not stay there because of the heat I will never go back to this location Honestly the waitress was even wearing a strapless dress and knew that they were patrons that were complaining and when I excused myself I told her my problems with the temperature and she kind of saw it coming

Carrot cake was great. Prime rib is amazing. I ordered the French dip and I don’t remember even chewing it. I want to eat one everyday for the rest of my life.

J Alexander’s has one of the best prime rib’s around. I ask for raw horseradish on the side and really kicks it up a notch. Can’t go wrong with any of their sides. Great fries. Amazing carrot cake. Service is very good here and waiters are well trained. I used to love the restaurant design, the remodel takes away the special ambiance and look it had with rounded booths, etc, but it’s still nice just preferred the old design.

J alexanders is all right sometimes but at my last visit I got the ahi tuna salad and it had brown spots on the lettuce my friend got a burger he ordered medium well and it came completely pink he sent it back and when it came back out was still completely red inside! The food was good but I’m just saying seemed like they didn’t care at all about customer satisfaction…

Fool me once, shame on you! Fool me twice, shame on me! Fool me 3 times– bad service, bad food, I’m just an idiot for going back! Won’t fill me 4 times! That’s a promise! This is the only location that manages to mess up a salad every single time!!! And serve you sides while you’re waiting for a steak to be prepared properly 3 times! Smh!

I have eaten here many times. Every time but one, the service was good and the food was very good. The only downfall is occasional long wait times to get a table.

Great food, very attentive service, and an excellent variety to choose from. Competitive prices and a good location so that it’s always bustling. Didn’t have any trouble getting a table for two at lunchtime during the Christmas season, not too shabby! Will certainly be back.

I love J. Alexander’s! I’ve been dining here since 2008; the service and food remain consistently good, and I am often greeted with a «Welcome back» from the staff that works hard to remember names, faces, and favorite cocktails. I would describe the menu as new American, offering sandwiches to ahi tuna and filet mignon. The portions are hearty, and I sometimes choose just an Alex’s Salad, which is enough for a light bite. Overall, J. Alexander’s is a great place to stop for a glass or wine and an appetizer while taking a break from holiday shopping, or as your destination restaurant for a dinner with friends.

I love this place. Food is always great, the service great and the prices fair for consistent quality. I don’t know about the other locations, but the Somerset store is a usual stop when I’m looking for something better than average. Try the grilled artichokes or the rib eye. Even the burger is done perfectly.

Went here for lunch and ordered fish tacos. Food was bland and would not recommend. Service was A+ –rating based solely on food. I probably would have to try this place again due to fantastic service and order something on the meat side as every place seems to have an off kitchen day.

Amazing food, excellent service. We got there shortly after opening and it was dead. Within the time we ate lunch, it was packed. We had the deviled egg appetizer. It had candied bacon on top and it was absolutely delicious. I just had a salad for lunch. It was pretty good, though I do wish they weren’t so stingy with the croutons because they were so tasty. My mom had one of the sandwiches, it was ham and cheese with a beautiful fried egg on top. Not only was it a beautiful work of art, it was super good. Pretty decent portion size and it came with a small salad and fries. I had the carrot cake for dessert because I’m a total freak, but it had to be one of the best carrot cakes I have ever had in my life. They serve it warm and the butter cream frosting gets melts and wonderful. I’m salivating writing this review as I think about it. I sampled my mom’s key lime pie which was equally tasty. My mom says«you know it’s real key lime when it’s not green!». It was indeed real and had a thick graham cracker crust. I can’t wait to go back and reignite my love affair with J. Alexander’s carrot cake!

The food was great and the portion sizes were very satisfying. We went with the Ahi tuna salad and the Pierre Burger, both were very good. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and very professional while still being personable. He was absolutely awesome! If you have the chance try to be waited on by Chris.

Review is from 02⁄2012 Nice server; Maui steak good, mashed potatoes were cold. Their filet mignon just didn’t compare to another place that we like. free bday carrot cake was good! Salad was ok, i liked the cilantro dressing; I would give it a 3.5… called 20 min b4 so when we got there only waited the 10 – 15 min which wasn’t too bad as they r very busy.

I was ready to give J Alexander a 3-star review — the soup was OK(«Polish Gumbo») the fish tacos were 80% cabbage(although they did accommodate my request for grilled fish instead of fried)…and then I ordered chocolate cake. The cake was fine — a HUGE piece, actually — and the ice cream/hot fudge were actively good. When the server asked me how I was enjoying the cake, I said, «It’s pretty good, but there’s just a lot of it. I almost wish there were some nuts or something to break it up.» I shouldn’t have been surprised when I dish of pecans showed up at the table a moment later… but then she came back a minute or two after THAT with a small dish of peanuts too. «I thought maybe you’d like peanuts too… or better…» Great service rounded out a decent(but not spectacular) meal.

I’m really disgusted by the updated design here. This used to be the date night spot for my wife and I. It used to be trendy. The new design is like a hospital cafeteria or grandma’s country buffet. Why go so bland?

I’ve never had a bad experience at J Alexanders and today was no different. I love that it’s a little dark in here, with just enough light to make you look gaw-juss! Our server(Shoshana…love that name!) was very attentive. I love the ice ice cold water they bring to you in the ice cold glass. Quite refreshing. Mojitos were strong and minty perfect. Shoe string fries, are like the only ones you can eat with your fork, and you totally want to once they are served to you. We had the warm beets with cheese and walnuts… SOGOOD! J Als, is just a cozy place to stop in for some good cheer. So stop in!

I know, it’s a chain, but it’s always one I am very glad to see. I am not adventurous with what I order here. I stick to the filet mignon and of course the real reason for coming, the carrot cake. You do not have a soul if you don’t like the carrot cake here. So this review might as well just be to tell you to order the carrot cake.

After a bit of shopping, my nieces got hungry at the mall. So ok, auntie feed us! Took them to j Alexander’s because the five year old didn’t feel like walking to the other side of the mall to go to pf changs. I haven’t eaten here in a while, and I’m very impressed. Our waiter Phil, was very sweet and my nieces loved him. Restaurant was very clean but the noise level was loud loud loud. Even my nieces were holding their hands up to their ears. Anyways, I ordered Mac n cheese for the girls, they loved it. Macaroni shells baked with white cheese and basil I think… it was very delicious. I had the grilled chicken salad as to attempt to stay away from carbs. I’ve never had a chicken salad where it was slices of chicken instead of chicken pieces that had to be cut up. I very much enjoyed this, was much easier to eat and very tasty. I should’ve ordered extra feta, I love feta cheese. So the attempt to stay away from sugar and carbs failed when we got offered dessert and carrot cake was on the menu. The girls said«carrot cake for dessert? Who wants vegetables as dessert?» No no no, carrot in the cake with cream cheese frosting, and raisins. I made them try it and I only got a bite out of it. I may go back just to have that carrot cake.
