Came here for lunch. Ordered two lunch set. I asked a glass of plum wine, ice on the side. The server put a bunch of ice in the glass. Oh my dear. She didn’t understand what it meant… okay. Though I took the ice out right after, the wine was super bland. It just tastes like as if its mixed with water. And I donno why she brought a glass of water with that. The lunch set was pretty good but the fish wasn’t really a great flavor. I had a really bad diarrhea after. They were out of ice cream for dessert when we were craving for tempura ice cream :/

4.5 star. We have been here multiple times during lunch. I always got the ginger pork(served on hot plate) with spicy tuna roll(or california roll or plain rice if you prefer, all same price). Good portion and it’s yummy! I tried the steak/ponzu once and while good, the portion is not as good as the ginger pork, which is understandable. Wife has always gotten sushi combos like nigiri/tempura. My daughter loves tempura and after she tried the ginger pork she’s in love as well. I don’t eat sashimi but Wife says the sushi is good, just not as good as Nozomi’s, but still good. Service could be better, but I normally don’t really attribute the overall rating on service. Food is more important. We have a dinner reservation later this week for a large group, so we’ll see how the dinner goes. Hopefully it won’t disappoint. Update: Dinner was also pretty good. The food was on a slow side but I guess it’s typical for the sushi/sashimi. However everyone was satisfied with the food quality as well as the large portion for the dinner gozens. We also had a few Omakase($ 26?) and it was also great. The fish is better than the ones from the sushi/sashimi gozens. By the way service was almost non-existence. The place was full and the waitresses weren’t attentive at all. I am leaving the rating at 4/4.5 star.

I don’t know about«hidden gem» but Kappo Irifune serves some solid sushi. Not spectacular food, but not bad size and quality for the price. I feel like only the lunch specials are worth it, have never been tempted to come here for dinner. Service can get a bit slow when it hits peak lunchtime hours, but they’re trying. Parking lot in the basement areas, the parking elevator is pretty darn slow.
They serve very good sushi. Service is average Japanese restaurant which is Just bring tea, water, drink if you ask and check. Nothing special. All you need to do is just ask!!! I had special sushi set with Tempra and Miso soup. All was very good. I will recommend to everybody including business entertainment etc for Japanese.

Came here for the lunch special… got the sushi combo and got a pretty good amount of sushi with a nice selection of side dishes for $ 18. Also there was a nice sweet treat that tasted like mochi… delish!

If you are hungry, it’s a good place to get you full with reasonable price, order the sushi bento. Decent quality, large portion, you get 8 pieces nigiri sushi and 8 pieces California roll, oshinko, chawanmushi, tempura vegetables & shrimps and, of course, miso soup. It comes with«fruit dessert», the one on the menu is sliced cantaloupe, I believe the content changes from time to time as I got syrup marinated banana this time, which made it lose a star. But in general, it’s a good places

This review is for the lunch. I ordered the Irifune Lunch Special for about $ 15. The aradaki(soy sauce and mirin simmered sea bream with the head, bones, tail) along with the sashimi boat was very decent for the price. Sashimi was pretty fresh. The red bean desert at the end was a good accent and punctuation to the lunch. This place has changed names so many times in the past 3 years. I hope this one sticks.

This place is amazing. I love the ambiance and the presentation of their meals. I ordered chirashi gozen and mannnn it was by far the best sushi rice I’ve ever tasted… and trust me I eat a lot of sushi. The gozen comes with a lot of small little side dishes… Even though the main dish might not look a lot but your tummy will definitely get super full by the time u finish your meal. I HIGHLY recommend this place to all sushi/japanese food. Seriously, go!

Food presentation was beautiful. It reminded me of Japan. There was a variety of food and it was good. I felt it was trying too hard. Sometimes it’s better to serve less so it’s appreciated more. When you have too many dishes at once, it’s too much. I guess if it came out a few dishes at a time, you could have digested some of the food and when the next course came, it would taste better. Does that make sense? Japanese food is so special to me that I want to relish it little at a time. That’s why Kaiseki is so wonderful. It was like a combo plate in special plates. It’s easier for the servers because they just serve once and get out of your way. I think this restaurant has potential and needs a little refining.

Came here for lunch and had the black cod gozen. The food was delicious and portion sizes were generous. The green melon and the jello dessert were on the too sweet side but otherwise everything was great!

In Old Torrance Sushi and Kaiseki Big portions Kappo Irifune is located in the two story shopping center on Cabrillo across the street from the Depot. You can either park underground or outside on Sartori. There are a bunch of outdoor spots but they are reserved for Yuzu and the dentist. It is located towards the back where El Prado ends. Outside the sign in English says Irifune. From the outside it looks like a little Sushi place but once inside around the corner from sushi bar is a modern dinning room with a stone wall dark and woody, almost something from roppongi. So in the dining room they have a menu with kaiseki style trays which comes with multiple dishes and condiments. The main courses include sashimi, sushi, eel, black cod, etc and make sure you order one that comes with chawanmushi, which is the best chawanmushi I have had. The meals here remind me of the Kaiseki lunches I had my last trip to Kyoto. I ordered the chirashi zushi meal with uni and ikura, which is a few dollars extra. Since they are using local uni, I was surprised you get a tiny amount, but considering how much an order of uni sushi is I guess it is fair. The sashimi was basic like tuna, salmon, octopus, snapper, shrimp, and seared local yellowtail. The condiments were stewed daikon, pickles, and the sushi rice was in a separate bowl topped with shredded eggs, nori, and flying fish eggs. The quality was pretty top notch and there was some meticulous detail that went in to the preparation of everything including the pickles. A big bonus is that they have Sapporo Biru on tap, which is how it should be served. if you are drinking it in a bottle you are missing out. I give Irifune 4.5* since the service could be a more attentive.

Having just been to Sushi Gen the other day, I’m almost inclined to say that the nigiri at Kappo Irifune is even better than Sushi Gen. While Gen does less rice, the thickness of the sashimi blows Gen by a far far mile. The quality of the fish was excellent. The variety of lunch combos/gozen were numerous. I simply don’t understand how Kappo can offer one so much food for such a fair price. As it currently stands Kappo is very identical to Yuzu in terms of its location(same plaza) and ambiance. Its a nice, quiet, japanese businessmen-oriented restaurant that one can easily overlook. Its quite a hidden gem in Torrance.

Wen to lunch to this place. The lunch place was so gorgeous. I really liked it. Portion is just about right. It has all the thing in there. Server ladies are very thoughtful and seems experienced. Yet, very friendly. Location is good, near Honda U.S. HQ and Toyota HQ. Easy access and easy parking. this district is called«Old Torrance» and has many other restaurant etc. The unit they are in has history of changing the restaurant too often. I see different restaurant in there every time I noticed. I hope this place stays because I like the food.

Kappo Irifune specializes in Gozen, which are sort of fancy meal sets that come with many little dishes. They also have a la carte Izakaya food that you find at many Japanese restaurants. I tried the sashimi gozen and a bite of the chirashi gozen and the steamed fish gozen. The sashimi gozen was delicious. It came with fresh cuts of tuna, salmon and hamachi sashimi. The set comes with higiki, potato salad, lettuce salad, miso soup, rice, chawanmushi, tempura and some cut up orange for dessert. This is a good deal at $ 18.99 a gozen. The sushi is very fresh and the steamed fish, while the glaze was a tad on the sweet side, was also very good and well prepared. The service was very accommodating and attentive. I would definitely come back. Also to note that they have a draft beer Happy Hour everyday from 5−8pm with Sapporo on draft for only $ 1.98. I would go if you want a traditional type of Japanese meal at a reasonable price or if you are having a hankering for fresh sushi, as the fish is very fresh here.

I had Lunch Sashimi & Tempura combination for $ 14.80. It was a lot of food with a very nice presentation. A little bit of strawberries with whip cream was a nice way to complete a meal. Tempura and its sauce were good. However, the quality of Sashimi was so-so. I thought they had to serve salmon sashimi on top of lemon slices because they knew it was not fresh.(To be fair, I just don’t think that quality fresh fish are served for lunch at any sushi restaurant. I feel that they save the quality fresh fish for dinner so that it can be sold at a higher price.) Having said that, I will definitely come back to this place. I think that most diners will be happy with this restaurant. It’s a nice treat!

Absolutely delicious! We sampled everything off each other’s platters and everything was out of this world. We ordered Uni, but were informed that it wasn’t available today because the sea was too rough. You know everything is fresh when you hear that. The service was very friendly & efficient. I will definitely be back.

This new restaurant is amazing! The customer service is superb; friendly and helpful. The price is decent and comparable. Their seafood is fresh and sweet. I ordered sashimi gozen and managed to finish everything although the portion is quite generous. Obviously, they serve good Japanese rice. It’s definitely a repeat place to go and strongly recommend others to try.
