#3 from The Cattle Prod files Here is a vignette of a recent morning experience at Walgreens, which also serves as a parable about what is necessary to survive day-to-day life in New Jersey: Me:(after waiting three minutes for Middle-aged Female Cashier to make her way over to the register) Good morning, [name withheld]. A pack of Camel 99’s please? MFC: Which ones are those? Me:(at the breaking point after a very rough start) They’re the same ones they were yesterday, and the day before that. The same ones they’ve been the last 200 times you’ve gotten them for me. MFC: There’s no reason to be nasty! I don’t smoke, and I don’t know anything about cigarettes! Me: You know I come in every morning, have been doing so for about two years, and that I buy cigarettes. MFC: I don’t work every morning. Me: I know that. But you know you see me every morning when you’re here. I believe you’re being deliberately obtuse. MFC:(reaches down and gets cigarettes, uninstructed)
