Tom’s Custom Floors

I found Tom on the internet. He’s all about his web site but buyer beware! He does not do the tile work himself, rather, shows up in the morning with his henchmen, including a «cousin» who laid the concrete, and then takes off. I stopped the work on a master bath when the cousin’s concrete laying did not seem right as no water was even approaching the drain. After 3 tile guys with 25 – 30 years experience came out to look at the job, all informed me that the job was not done properly and that I would be having leaks and broken tiles, not to mention the possibility of the concrete coming through my laundry ceiling. The cousin had removed all the framing a handy person had put in and poured 5 bags of concrete on a single piece of plywood that wasn’t even anchored! The entire base had to be removed as well as all the underlayment (insufficient for marble tiles) I paid the cousin in cash per Tom’s suggestion. I am out the $ I paid him, $ 200 in hardee backer that wasn’t going to provide a waterproof base, and $ 100 for a Schluter drain that was ruined with the concrete and that Tom took home to «clean» leaving it scratched. I stoppped payment on the check I gave Tom for misc «materials» that was going to add up to almost a thousand dollars! You see, he provides estimates that appear to be quite low and he has you run around shopping for obsolete things like Latikrete mortar, and then it all adds up to a lot more than you thought. In addition to that, I had to spend $ 250 on 2 air purifiers as his guys cut cement board IN MY HOME and when I complained, IN MY GARAGE! That has left my daughter and I to breathe in the particles that are everywhere. I also had to argue for a seat that he insisted could not be done, instead of the bench he preferred to do. (easier). DO NOT HIRE HIM! Go the the Tile Shop in Tinley Park and get a name from their preferred list of contractors.
