The Hostel

The Hostel seems to have some good things going for it like the location, price, game area, mattresses, bathrooms, coffee service, and kitchen. However, it has some not so good things going for it. I encourage you to read on.
The location is great. It’s an easy 5 minute walk to the lifts. The price is much lower than the other hotels in the area. If you’re on a budget, it will save you some money. The game area in the basement was nice and there’s a kitchen down there too. The bathrooms in the rooms look newer and the mattresses seemed to be in good condition.
When I checked in, the staff told me there’s «free coffee» lobby. I was impressed because the coffee was actually pretty good. That is, after I reminded the staff to brew it… They kept forgetting. However, when I check out, I noticed a «Resort Fee» for $ 4.56 a night on my bill. Did I miss something? I didn’t know I was staying at a resort! Ha!
I asked a front desk clerk about the «Resort Fee» and he said it was for things like the coffee and fee ice. I said: «Oh, I thought there was a secret hot tub somewhere that I didn’t know about. This being a resort and all…»
Personally, I find it really shady to tell people the coffee is free, then sneak a charge onto their bill for it. They even advertise free coffee on their website. Here’s a quote from the site: «A coffee experience in our lobby, with organically grown, just-​ground blends from Jackson’s own JH Roasters, served up in coffee brewers that keep it hot and fresh. So tasty. And also now FREE.» False advertising!!! It’s not free!!!
Also I’m being charged for ice? It’s 8 degrees at mid-​day and there’s two feet of snow on the ground. Why would I need free ice? I could leave a jar of mayonnaise out in the sun all day and it wouldn’t spoil. Have you ever heard of a hotel charging for ice anyway? Shady!
Beside being charged for «Free Coffee» and for the ice. There were some other issues. The mattress was too small for the bed frame. It actually looks like the bed frame was hammered together with 2x4s. It seemed to go hand in hand with the plywood walls that don’t filter any sound. I could hear my German neighbors playing techno music late into the night.
The worst part was the door! It didn’t fit into the frame very well and the weather stripping was limited to the bottom. There was a terrible wind blowing through the gaps around the door and my feet were really cold. It got so bad the second night I had to stuff newspapers into the gaps around the door. No kidding! I even took pictures.
These guys even charged me a «Cancellation Fee» of $ 9.13 when I decided not to stay a fourth night. I gave them a couple days notice about the change in plans but they charged me anyway. I worked in the hotel business for years for many different chains. We never charged anyone a fee unless they cancelled after 6pm on the night of the reservation.
I leave it to you to decide if the «Free Coffee» discounted rate, kitchen and location are worth it. Personally, I was really disappointed and don’t trust the staff. I’ll never go back.

This place is the best. Don’t ruin it.

Honestly, don’t know why you’d stay anywhere else. Perfect place, real chill staff, perfect place to your nights after you’re done with the slopes. Free coffee, tea, and hot cocoa. Lots of activities downstairs (ping-​pong, pool, etc.)

Stay away from this place. They will charge you a fee to hold the room and not answer their phone within 48 hours of arrival. Not «buts»
Customer service is a concept unknown to not only the staff but also the management.
Regardless of pricing, you will be better off going elsewhere.

We stayed here in july 2015. Stayed 6 nights. We are both senior citizens and enjoyed our stay. We realized it would be rustic but it was clean. We were going to spend most of our time seeing the tetons and yellowstone so all we needed was a nice bed and a shower with plenty of towels. That is what we got. The price was great and we will stay there again the next time we visit the parks.

Simple, clean, unpretentious, and highly affordable describe this throw back to an earlier era. The room price is about half of its nearest competitor and the fact that the rooms lack tv and a phone is not a problem. Two tv’s are in the common area and everyone has a smart phone anyway. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Rooms are somewhat stark but certainly functional with a sink outside the bathroom and a tiny shower and toilet. They remind me of national park lodges that meet just your basic needs with no frills whatsoever. There is no elevator for the five story building. Everything in the common area is worn and decades old while still working. The basement has pool and ping pong tables, dozens of board games, dining tables, ski storage, ski maintenance equipment, and several seating areas. Rooms open to the outside which can be a problem in inclement weather. The walls are thin allowing noise which disturbed me two of my six nights. Staying here is all about communal living. Eat your breakfast at one of the common tables and meet people from around the world from all walks of life as I did. Refrigerators are available to store your food — all I had to do was label it and no one touched it. I left my skis outside for hours and they were still there when I returned. Everyone said hello to me as I encountered them. The experience that this place offers cannot be found at any ski resort I have ever visited. If you want to be pampered and surrounded by luxury, then go elsewhere. If you want to have a memorable, unique experience of how it was done decades ago, then stay here.

it’s great if you like bed bugs.
i have stayed here twice, once since the previous owner sold it (several years ago ski trip), and once after the new owner (past weekend bike trip). First ski trip was great due to location and cost, this past weekend, not so much.
I stayed two nights, I am super paranoid about bed bugs, so i checked a few of the matresses. I didnt see any tell tale signs on the top of the mattress, but the bottom of the mattress did have some stains, when i looked closely, i wondered if it was stains from the wood underneath. tenatively, i did the second test, lie in the dark and wait to see what happens. never felt any creepy crawlys, but within a half hour i had a series of bites on my lower back.
i said wtf, moved all my stuff back into my car, and then slept in my car.
i told the front desk about this the next day hoping to get a room change but it was all booked (holiday weekend), and the the dude at the front told me its not probably not bed bugs, but that they recently had an aphid infestation and that its not a huge deal.
being labor day weekend, i had no place to go, and i stayed one more night (had 3 nights booked). kept all my stuff outside the room just in case, received several more bites, checked out and ended my vacation a day early.
all my stuff is on my driveway now as i inspect each piece one by one before bringing it into my house. bed bugs are not to be messed with!
jackson is great, but pony up an extra 100/​night to avoid this potential nightmare. or go camping.

Kitschy and affordable. This is hands down the cheapest option in the Jackson/​Teton area. A quad (4 beds) is about $ 120. That is $ 30 a bed if you’re traveling with friends. Privacy is good. The rooms have card swipes and private bathrooms. Free tea and coffee in the commons room. Free use of the fridge and kitchen. You can really bum it cheap if you plan for it.
The parking can be a pain, but that goes for all area hotels. Teton Village has more cars than spaces most nights. If you’re out in Jackson and return late, expect to park a few blocks away. The floors creak loudly most of the night as people wander the facility. I was skeptic of the «creaking» complaints on other reviews, but after staying here, they are not exaggerated. It gets pretty annoying after hearing it for hours on end.
Overall fun place. Good people, cheap, comfortable. It is what it is: not great, but unapologetically decent.

Great location & ‘affordable’ by Jackson standards, but for $ 120+/night I wish I had slept in my car! The walls were so thin it may have been a sheet. The creaking floorboards above me were even worse– what the heck were they doing? Sounded like a Zumba class above me. Like another reviewer, I also received a bug bite– probably spider on my first night.
Clean bathroom– yes. That & good hot water were all it had going for it.

This was the cheapest place to stay in the area — to be honest probably within a 20 – 30 mile radius on the night that I was looking for. The staff person who checked us in was very friendly and helpful. Since it is called «The Hostel» I was not expecting «A Hotel.» The room was pretty bare bones coming with just two towels & washcloths. The bed and bedding were fair. What was the worst was the insanely thin walls — it just so happened our «next door neighbors» decided to talk all night, and while I don’t think they were being particularly raucous, rude or loud — I could still clearly hear about 80% of their words. If I had to do it all over again, I probably would’ve paid a little more and stayed somewhere with thicker walls.

Why are people giving this place a break because it’s a hostel? It’s an absolute dump. Spend an extra $ 20 and get a nice room across the parking lot.
I’ve stayed at over a hundred hostels, and this is one of the worst I’ve ever seen.

The Hostel x is the soul of Jackson Hole. If you don’t understand that then you should be at Deer Valley or Aspen. These guys founded the Jackson Hole Air Force. Look them up if you don’t know who they are. There is a great documentary about them. It’s on iTunes.
Cheap rooms that are always clean. The location is perfect. A nice walk to the Gondola or Tram to warm up a bit then ski in at the end of the day.
I have stayed here many times and have always been happy. Every time I end up meeting and skiing with interesting people.
I could win the lottery and I would still stay at The Hostel x.

The accommodations are modest but hey, its a hostel. Rooms seemed clean, water pressure was good enough, and the water was hot. You definitely get what you pay for and its a good option amongst the normal more expensive options. It was my first hostel experience so I was unsure what to expect. The amenities were good with their game room filled with fun stuff. I didnt use it since I was exploring but I could see how others might enjoy it. I also appreciated the good internet wi-​fi connection. I think they charge something small like $ 5 for your entire stay. I was able to stream my NFL mobile with no problems and actually sit outside to watch.
One thing I would caution is if you are tall. I am 511″ which isnt too tall but I forgot what it was like to sleep in a twin bed. You could get stuck on the top bunk which looked difficult to navigate or you could get the bed next to the door. Because of how it was configured, the bed next to the door had your head right next to the door so whenever the door opened, that person got the brunt of noise, weather, light, etc. I would say the best bed is probably the bottom of the bunk since you have your own space without the possibility of touching other peoples feet, being by the door, or having to navigate the top bunk. If youre shorter, it might not be such an issue.

Pros: clean room and bathroom. Relatively friendly staff.
Cons: I couldn’t sleep at all. The walls are so thin and these teens are so loud. It sounds like they are yelling the whole night.
Due to not being able to sleep: 1 star.

Private room, slope side for $ 79 dollars a night? amazing!
My boyfriend and I spent the last week at the hostel and had an amazing time. The rooms are clean and newly renovated (new beds, new carpets, new showers, new toilets), and the staff is super nice. We had new towels, toilet paper and a made bed everyday.
Obviously the building is quite old but it is a piece of Teton village history and I felt lucky to stay there.
Other reviewers are correct in saying the the walls and floors are quite thin, but I never found it to be an issue (bring ear plugs if you are worried about it). All in all the best vacation I’ve taken in along time

We stayed here after coming off the mountain and a 4 day hike thru the wilderness with our kids. It was perfect for us and a really great price. All we needed was a place to sleep for a night and it was perfect. The room was clean and the kids loved hanging out in the game room. We occupied the whole room so we didn’t have to share. The noise wasn’t that bad … but we have 2 kids so we try not to complain about the noise too much … The staff was friendly and the hot coffee was yummy. Would definitely stay there again. Heck, if you’re in Jackson Hole there is so much to do you shouldn’t need more than a place to put your sleepy head at the end of the night.

J and I were looking for a place to crash that was clean, convenient and cheap. The Hostel fit the bill. We stayed in a king with private bath for $ 59/​night.
Like others have mentioned, the bathroom was surprisingly clean. And spacious! The room itself was also huge, and features a somewhat suspect (we each got a bug bite during our stay there) «king» bed (aka: two fulls pushed together). Other than that the room was pretty bare bones. The walls are rather thin… so beware. You can definitely hear your neighbors. There is actually a cleaning person who comes by during the day, as J and I were surprised to return to a neatly made bed and empty trash cans.
There are free amenities (toothpaste, razors, gum, etc) and coffee + hot water/​tea available in the lobby. You can find games, reading material, fridges, a microwave and a tv in the common space below. Both are open from 7:30am-midnight. Wifi is $ 5 for your entire stay, but I can’t comment on signal strength as J and I passed on this. The staff members are very friendly.
OVERALL: The hostel was a perfectly fine place for us to stay a few nights. If we hadn’t had a problem with bug bites in our room I would have bumped up the rating to 3.5÷4 stars.

okay let make this clear — this is a HOSTEL, not a HOTEL — you get what you paid for. if you want luxury, go find somewhere else. Hostels isn’t about privacy and peace; it’s about meeting other travelers and having a blast.
With that said…
Wi-​Fi for your whole stay for additional $ 5, and towels are provided. That bathroom was actually really clean… I was surprised by it. Great location, great deal for it’s price.
A minor disappointment was that all my other 3 roommates were sleeping at 11PM… WTF??? This is HOSTEL people. Last time I was at a hostel I drank til 3 am with awesome Aussies.
Nevertheless, this place is a great bargain.
A few things to note though. This hostel is different from other hostels:
— No complimentary breakfast.
— No 24 hour lounge; it’s open from 7:30AM~midnight.
…no breakfast I kinda understand… but no 24 hour lounge was a real disappointment; that’s actually how you meet other travelers and get good infos…

This place is fine if you go into the situation expecting a hostel-​like situation. If you’re paying considerably less than you would elsewhere in Teton Village, what do you have to complain about?
Yes, the building is old, wooden, and can be quite noisy. Yes, you don’t get many of the amenities that you’d get elsewhere. But, the staff is super helpful and our room was very clean.

Okay, why the low rating well the room I stayed in was a dump. It’s actually located in the complex that makes up the Jackson hole ski resort. This was during a summer visit to grand Teton national park and this was about the lowest priced lodging closeby and it was still on the high side. To give you an idea my roommate was a local gas station attendant who could not afford the local rents.
Other than the dingy nature of the room itself it’s in a decent location and not a far drive to the town of Jackson hole
