Do not be fooled by the outside appearance of this place! I ordered food to-go and was very pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. I have driven past this place for 4 months, every day on my way to work and honestly never expected them to be a decent sushi place(which I remember thinking was a bummer, since we live only a few minutes away). Our regular go-to sushi spot(Miyabi) for our office is closed on Mondays, so after seeing all the great reviews this place got, we decided to try it out! First things first: I tried ordering ahead of time but the phone number on Unilocal/Google/their website is wrong — it gave us the dial tone whenever we tried calling. I even asked what the phone number was when I got to the restaurant, but the chef gave me the same phone number that I’d tried earlier. Besides that, the chef was very pleasant(even though by this time I was there ~20 min before they closed for lunch — since the phone number hadn’t worked for me to order ahead) and happily took my order. What I was even more impressed with was that all 4 rolls were done in about ~10 minutes! He packaged it up great, and I was on my way. Back at the office both my coworker and I were very impressed with the flavor and freshness of our rolls! And for all 4 rolls our total came out to ~$ 30, which I thought was very reasonable. We both really enjoyed the sushi, and will definitely be ordering from them again in the future.

Touché Gari! Well done! I came here one day while I was in Tacoma for work. My lunch appointment cancelled so I had some time to burn. I asked a friend who lives around here where a good lunch spot is that I could go by myself– enter Gari of Sushi. Upon pulling up to the place, the thought«what the heck was she thinking» and«maybe she’s trying to get me killed?» Popped into my head. Little apprehensive to say the least, but soon as you walk in, instant opinion change. Nicely decorated, clean and open! The server and chef were both very pleasant, it’s got a nice atmosphere. Next the sushi– I had the Tempura Seattle Roll with regular salmon(not smoked) and the Fisherman with Escolar. Fisherman was a little heavy on the crab mix but all in all I loved it! What a great little hidden gem. I would definitely recommend this place for lunch or if you are looking for a little hide away to work.(Not sure if they have wifi since I have a hotspot)

Comment solely based on experience as I never even had the chance to get anything to eat. I visited on a Friday evening around 545 to get a small sashimi order to go — bear in mind they open at 5pm. There were about 6 tables sat ranging in parties of 2 – 6 and 2 singles at the bar. There were two waitresses and the sushi chef at the bar. I was greeted immediately by all 3 which was kind. However the greeting was followed by the chef saying«we’re very busy.» A waitress cruises by and says«if you eat it will be 1 hour for food.» The third waitress asks if I was dining or ordering togo and when I said togo she said it will be over an hour. No conversations were had face to face as these were all yelled at me as they came and went from table to table. I get that they may have been busy, but it was a light load considering available seating and that most establishments know they are busy on weekend evenings. I felt like they were deterring my service rather than welcoming me to stay. Considering my plan to order sashimi, it’s also disappointing that I would have to wait an hour to get a few choice cuts of fish. Of course they never bothered to see if they could accommodate because they never even began a conversation to see what I wanted to eat. No one appeared to be enjoying their experience and the family that came in behind me was just as put off as I was. Not the vibe I wanted to soak in for a Friday night. After leaving I went to miyabi just down the road and left with my order to go within 10 minutes and received excellent service. I may try an off peak time to give gari of sushi another go, I hope they can redeem this experience.

What lovely people, and great food! Last night, I ate here with my wife, on our return from Seattle. It is right off of the freeway, and the outside definitely doesn’t do it justice. There is a pretty neat collection of glass stuff in there, and an open floor. Our food was amazing! I had a salmon skin roll, and a Rainbow roll. My wife ordered a Scorpion roll and shrimp tempura, I believe. That was plenty for both of us. I plan on going back, when we visit Tacoma in early February!

Gari of Sushi is a place that is underestimated. The location is not screaming, «Eat here!» and traffic is left to be desired. Upon entering the establishment, it’s a different story: It’s warm and welcoming. The food is very good(I love their sushi) and the staff is courteous. Go on and try this place, you’ll love it!

Great sushi! It doesn’t look like much from the outside and almost looks divey, but the sushi is on point! I am very picky with my sushi places that I go to, and this one definitely goes to the top of the list! Make sure you try the eel, and the tacoma roll!

The service was great. This place can accommodate groups easily. And the food is very good. The looked beautiful tasted as good as it looked. Presentation was on point as well. For those not eating sushi, the teriyaki was delicious. And the Tonkatsu was the best that I have had in a very long time. The food was cooked perfectly and the sushi was top notch. The prices are very reasonable for the quality. By all means, not a cheap meal. But it is well worth it. Highly recommended.

If you miss the bitter old waitress with the terrible attitude at the Pearl street El Toro, you’ll love the waitress here. The food was ok but it sure didn’t look like $ 70 worth, even when she left all the dirty dishes in front of us.

This is truly a place that I wish that I could enjoy being at every night of my life. The only problem I ever have is deciding between the sashimi plate or the chirashi! Then I realize, how could I go wrong with anything that is on this menu? Thank you Kazuya! I have truly enjoyed the food that you have prepared me over the years. Trust me, I will be there for years to come!

We decided to give this place a try and came in at about 820 the place was a ghost town we still gave it a chance. The waiter didn’t even talk to us and they seemed to have been closing early because hours were till 9pm the waitress was reading a book in corner. The menu was not impressive and overpriced. We decided after 8 min that we were leaving they waived bye to us with out even asking if there was a issue. We will never come back. Maybe we caught them at a bad time but if your in business and it’s till 9 then u have to treat all your customers equally. It’s no wonder it was a ghost town. To conclude this review they locked the door within second of leaving. Really? This place will not last with these business practices.

This is our local sushi place and we really appreciate all the veggie rolls. For Tacoma we give them a four, if you’re from a city like Seattle, NYC, LA etc you might think of them as a three. A solid, good three! 3 ½ maybe. They have the simple veggie rolls like avocado and cucumber however they also have rolls like the moss garden, land mermaid, tsunami which have ingredients such as yam, cream cheese, asparagus, tofu, seaweed salad and more. The service is always quick and friendly. My husband really enjoys their sake too. Definitely the best sushi in Tacoma. Enjoy :)

The building is rough looking, but don’t be fooled. The inside is really nice. The sushi is really awesome and fresh. Their rolls are really different from other places I have been to. Really delicious and weird cilantro-esque mint stuff on some sush(it tells you what it is on the menu)

Some say trying Sashimi would reflect the entirety of the restaurant but hey I dont think it really do the justice of knowing how their rice is being made. That being said I tried their sashimi and couple of my favorite nigiris and agedashi tofu. When it comes to sashimi. I can tell it was tail ends so had more chewier texture while nigiris were made with better part of the fish so was much softer but then their rice is very much dry and starchy… Was very surprised they would use such a rice for sushi… agedashi tofu was perfect though with crunchiness and softness of tofu complemented very well. Seem like the chefs were more in knowledge of Japanese cuisines than just sushi. I would recommend ordering some delicate dishes to try out variety of Japanese cuisines rather than just sushi alone.

Wanted to eat there with some friends and family, about 20 of us total. I told the guy we don’t have to be at the same table and he can spread us out but he told us not to come. I asked«Are you telling me you don’t want 20 people to come and eat at your restaurant?» And he said yes. Are you kidding me dude? Whatever, won’t be back.

The outside was a little rough looking, could use a facelift. Fortunatly the inside was on point and most importantly the Sushi. I Unilocaled this place on a roadtrip that took me through Tacoma. A couple rolls and some sashimi later I was stoked.

This is our new sushi place. Amazingly we had never tried it before, even though it is 5 minutes from our house. Today we decided to give it a try and we’ll be back for sure. Kyle and I started with edamame and miso soup. The miso was great, plenty of tofu though I didn’t see much seaweed. We moved on to the sushi course and we were both very impressed. My tuna nigiri was beautiful and very fresh. The wasabi between the fish and rice very present, but I’m a wasabi fan so I enjoyed that. Service was extremely quick and friendly. Japanese television shows kept us entertained while we waited. Menus was a bit long; there are pictures of every roll. It took us a while to thumb through. But the tidbits/tips on the back were interesting. Great experience. I can’t wait to go back.
