Very nice food and huuuuge portions. Place is not so pretty but it’s authentic. Staff are Hungarian and very helpful. Schnitzel is delish. Make a reservation and get the early bird.

This was now our second time dining there. We went the first time after it was highly recommended by friends and we decided to see for ourselves. Six of us went to the early bird special. Excellent service, nice ambiance and scrumptious food. Did I also mention plentiful and very reasonably priced for a 4 course dinner. We started with delicious potato pancakes with sour cream and apple sauce. Then came a very generous and tasty bowl of soup(2 choices), or a huge salad with a lovely house vinaigrette. By this time we all barely had room for the main course. I had the hunter’s schnitzel, my wife the Wiener schnitzel and our friends had other choices. We all enjoyed our meals and took about half of them home. The deserts were rich and appealing and the coffee acceptable. All in all we had a great meal at a reasonable price. We decided to go back on another occasion with other friends at a later time in the evening and our experience was just as pleasing. The main course portions were double what we had had for the early bird special and even more food was taken home. We’ll be visiting again!

LOTSOFFOOD, left with doggy bags with enough to feed 3 people. GREATVALUE! Ambience wasn’t as quaint as reviews. Felt like a strip mall mom and pop eatery with a few old fashioned china cabinets with chockies. Food was mediocre. Potato pancakes first warm not hot. Soup or salad, soup not hot… big bowl though. Had weiner schnitzel(pounded and fried) veal cutlet… Two gigantic fall of the plate. One side and creamed spinach and red cabbage family style. Every thing was lukewarm at best. Dessert and coffee all for about 20 bucks. Great value for big eaters!

I have been here a few times over the years, and just had another round. The potato pancakes and the schnitzel are certainly good. Bigger servings of applesauce, sour cream and gravy would be nice. This time I had«lobster» bisque. It was a bit too peppery and there seemed to be a good deal of mock crab meat in it, but no discernible lobster. The serving was generous and the price point is low. I also had lamb shank– a dish I wish I saw on more menus. The meat and brown gravy were fine, but there were beans with it. Never had that before, although I see recipes for it online. Didn’t care for the beans and wish I had been warned. Tasted the cheese cake– ok, but they put whipped cream on the desserts, something I happen not to like, either, and wish I was told of that in advance, as well. No complaints about the ice cream dessert, except for the unwanted whipped cream. None of this is a deal-killer, but it could be better. I’ll try again down the road.

Nice family owned restaurant. When you come in you think you’re walking into your grandma’s kitchen. The place is decorated just like a kitchen would be, curio and China cabinets full of mismatched glasses and dishes, black and white checkered board floors, vinyl table cloths, and food is served in those old style ceramic plates with fruits printed on them, very charming I thought. I had to call ahead since reservations are required apparently, but I was able to come in the same day I called. Our waiter, I strongly believe was the owner, was efficient, a bit serious, but the person who brought our food out was an older lady, maybe it was grandma the cook :) Food wise, dishes are between $ 20.99 and up. But they do come with soup or salad and dessert, HUGE portions, by the time I had my potatoe soup, which was exellent, my latkes(they bring latkes and rolls upon arrival) I was full! I had the garlic chicken, which was delicious. Everything tastes home made. For dessert I had an apricot crêpe. A tad too sweet, but good. All in all, it was a nice experience, food was great, and the place was clean and charming. I would definitely be back.

The food is good. The ambiance is a bit lacking. Its a family ruin establishment that treats its customers right. If you leave here hungry, see a Dr. They give you more food than you could eat in 2 sittings.

Over the years, my wife and I have eaten here and have had the Chicken Cacciatore, Chicken Paprikash, Veal Goulash, Paella, Wiener Schnitzel, Roasted Duck, and other meals I can’t even remember. It is small and the ambience is very laid back. We have yet to find a dish that is not well prepared and tasty. The first time we ever went, the host told us in detail how everything worked and what came with the meal and how best to pair things up. Your whole meal comes at one price for everything. You can add an appetizer if you’d like, but from here on out, what I describe all comes with the price of your meal. To start, they bring you bread and potato pancakes. The potato pancakes are absolutely yummy and you can dress them up with either sour cream or apple sauce. As for the bread, I prefer the Pumpernickel. They then bring out a soup or salad for you. This last time, I got the corn chowder. It comes out warm/hot and not steaming, just the way I like. After that, it’s time for the main entrée to come. As always, the Wiener Schnitzel I had was tender and out of this world. My wife tried the Paella and try as she might, could not finish her portion. Did I mention that the portions are HUGE? I got my meal with Spaetzle and they also bring out a a shared bowl of Creamed Spinach, and a shared bowl of Red Cabbage. The spinach is delightful and compliments your entrée very well. After dinner, you are asked which of their delicious desserts you would like. Normally we get the homemade apple strudel, but this time we were so full and though we’d normally get the strudel and take it home, decided to go another route. I just had the ice cream with a hot tea and my wife had ice cream and a hot coffee. Even if you cannot eat it, get the strudel and take it home. Warm it up for a late-night treat. I promise you won’t regret it. If you’d like something different in South Florida, if you’re a foodie looking for that hidden gem, or if you just want to go somewhere inexpensive that is not a chain place, this should be your go to restaurant. Make sure to make reservations as it is a small and intimate place that is worthy of the attention it gets.

My family and I have been going to Uncle Lui’s for quite a few years now. It’s delicious, hearty, homemade, Hungarian food. First off, your price for dinner includes: small bowls of red cabbage and creamed spinach to share, rolls, soup, entrée and side, beverage, and dessert. The matzoh ball soup is out of this world. My favorite dish is the chicken paprikash with spaetzle. I have tried others, but always go back to that one. My husband likes the schnitzel. The best dessert is the apple streudel. And, no matter how much you stuff yourself, you will have leftovers to take home. Often, we are the youngest people in the place.(We are in our 50s and our kids are now in their 20s; but, we have been going since the kids were younger.) The clientele is mainly a seniors crowd. But, don’t let that stop you. Who else knows where the good food is at a bargain price? The place is kind of small, so be sure to make reservations. Uncle Liu’s has been around for quite a while now. And, I hope it never goes away.

I’m glad I found this place. It couldn’t be more Hungarian. I went there with some friends. The furnitures and the little gadgets reminded me of some old restaurants in Hungary. I was constantly smiling while we were there. Surprisingly, the soup tasted just like the one my grandma used to make back home. I haven’t had something similar at a restaurabt before, so this family-style thing must be true. Portions are huge, so eventually it’s enough for 2 dinners. You’ll get pancakes, soup/salad, main dish which comes with red cabbage and cream spinach family style, plus dessert and coffee. Great deal. Just don’t forget to make a reservation. It was quite busy after 6pm on a Friday night. Go and get some taste of the Hungarian lifestyle. I’ll definitely go back.

Let me 1st start off by saying this is not a high dining establishment, actually I don’t know how to describe it. Not a diner since it doesn’t open till 4PM sort of like eating dinner in someone’s Home. A Mom & Pop establishment with old china closets plastic table cloths, booths and a quick serving home style meal. Atmosphere is minimal but the menu is diverse. Beer and wine only and only House wine and a couple of imported beers and that is it. Recommended by a friend 4 of us sat down for fast & furious meal that really was surprisingly good on all counts. Menu is short on appetizers but you don’ t need them and the house specials are on the chalk board of this 49 seat place when you walk in. Immediately presented with complimentary potato pancakes which are deep fried well done but soft inside and extremely tasty. All entrees come with choice of soup — corn chowder or spicy lobster bisque or House salad. The Corn chowder was a bit bland and a little watery but the lobster bisque was full of flavor & spice. Salads were cold & crisp with a nice blue cheese dressing. All entrees also come with choice of various sides which I’ll address shortly. Entrees: Wiener Schnitzel…$ 13.95 Your standard pounded veal cutlet served with side of brown gravy & lemons. Portion was enormous enough for two. Cutlets were thin, fresh, hot & flavorful while the brown gravy was an excellent touch. Veal Gordon Blue…$ 13.95 Stuffed with Ham & cheese with the same brown sauce as above. If you like the cheese and carbs this is the way to go top notch. Chicken Cacciatore…$ 13.95 Hungarian version of this Italian specialty with peppers, onions, mushrooms and tomato sauce. Bites of chicken were a bit small but otherwise dish was tasty. and fresh. Shrimp with garlic and lemon & onions …$ 17.95 small shrimp tails on smothered in a tasty sauce. Aside from fighting with the tails on very small shrimp the sauce was incredible rich and excellent. Sides: Spetzle, Really not sure what this was some sort of mushy white pasta. LOL but it was utterly flavorless. Sorry this one failed. Sweet Potato ¼ size of a Jumbo hot and fresh Yellow Rice was well yellow rice. :) Home Fried Potato’s were pretty good but could have used some seasoning. Red Cabbage in a spicy sour cream sauce was very good. Creamed spinach was also in a sour cream based sauce that was ok. Deserts: Coffee was HOTFRESH and tasty Home made: Apple Strudel & Ice Cream was positively sinful Home Made Crêpe was just OK. All and all service was fast and professional family run, and food for price points was off the charts. Nothing fancy here just down home good food in a non descript strip mall. I’ll be back when in the area.

This family-owned restaurant has been around for years and located in a small strip by Lowe’s in Sunrise, FL. This place is small, with old furniture and décor, but the plates of food are abundant! Each plate will feed a minimum of two people, but they don’t allow sharing. Keep in mind, this restaurant serves German/Hungarian food, so don’t expect their Chicken Francese or Chicken Cacciatore to be like the Italian version. It WILL be different! Their Wiener Schnitzel is huge and delicious! When you are seated, the staff brings a basket of different rolls and big potato latkes, served with applesauce and sour cream. With your main entrée, you receive a soup or salad. Each entrée is served with a side(rice, spaetzle(like gnocchi) or potato). When they serve the entrée, they also provide a bowl of creamed spinach and red cabbage, which they put in the middle of the table to share. Each meal ends with a dessert and coffee(meal is served with beverage, but I choose the coffee to go with my dessert). The apple streudel is very good! The dishes range anywhere from.$ 17+, but they do offer an «Early Bird» menu(must be seated by 5pm), which costs slightly less(approx.$ 13), but the portions are supposed to be smaller(not sure by how much). They have a regular menu, but at the door, there are quite a few daily specials posted on a chef’s chalkboard. The staff is small, but pleasant. If you plan on going with little ones, they do not offer a kids menu. Although they don’t allow sharing, they allowed my 10 yr. old son to share my plate. I’m not quite sure what the age cutoff is because we have been there with a 12 yr. old and we were forced to order a plate for her. Be prepared to take home leftovers, unless you are a glutton!

As Authentic as it gets! Perfect experience. I had the Hungarian veal goulash, hubby had Veal Schnitzel. Both were amazing! The cabbage… who knew cabbage could be so mouth watering!!! Service… Felt welcomed, and he patiently educated us on the menu. Def Mom and Pop atmosphere, but we love that. Meal is 4 courses, at a great deal. Highly recommend.

Reviews that mentioned the potato pancakes being too dark yet under cooked were off base for me. The potato pancakes were crispy, not oily, and cooked properly. Tasty as well. Sides included creamed spinach and red cabbage. Both were good, although I could have had more cabbage. I ordered the Escargot for an appetizer. Normally, they are served in a fancy fish with or without the shells. Here, no, just in a bowl. However, I liked it better this way! Easier to use the bread to soak up the juices that were NOT overly garlic so you could taste the snails. I thought it was delicious and buttery. My main dish was the Hunter Schnitzel. Properly cooked and LOTS of it! It was also tasty but a but bland. I like BIG flavors. It was BIG though, enough for a 2nd meal the next day. No one at my table finished so we all had another dinner the following day. I just with I’d have had more Escargot for that 2nd meal. I would return to try another dish. Regarding comments on the staff, they were not overly friendly but they were not unfriendly either. I only comment at all due to others saying they were not nice. I didn’t detect any real issues with the staff. Certainly worth a visit.

Wow! What a great meal we had tonight. The potato pancakes and fresh baked pumpernickel rolls got us started. Then came the mushroom soup followed by the most delicious Veal Goulash I be ever had. But… it just got better when Elizabeth brought out the Apple strudel. OMG! the place is so simple and offers delicious food at such reasonable prices. It is a rarity to find a true family business like this where Dad is the Chef, Mom is delivering the food to the table and the son is there to greet you and take your order. The Paprikash and cheesecake that my girlfriend had was also amazing! We are coming back… and back again after that

Uncle Lui we need to break up… I tried to love you and I know you tried to love me but I couldn’t muster love for your food and your love thru your food fell short of my needs. It’s not me — because I really like this food — it’s you and your inability to execute delicious dishes. Please don’t be mad at me — there are people who ‘get’ you and appreciate you for what you are — I’m just not one of them. I’m concerned that as the older clientele drop off the grid you might struggle for business but for now, with the help of discount sites, you seem to be doing ok. What brought me to this? Uncle Lui’s is a restaurant that looks like it’s in your Grandma’s apartment. From the knick knacks in the china cabinets to the plastic tablecloths it doesn’t seem like a commercial establishment. And, as if visiting an apartment of an elderly person, anyone can see the stains on the chair seat cushions and chips on many of the dishes but no one says anything. I have been here before because I have family members who relate to the food, as do I, but every time I get the feeling that the place is a bit dirty and the food is a bit dumpy. I return 2 or 3 times a year to see if maybe this time I’ll like it but tonight was my last time. If my family members have a hankering for their food they can either go without me or take it to go. The manager and server are hard-working people. The server is a woman who is not a young person and she is stronger and faster than I ever was or will be. We admire her speed and ability. We ordered Veal Goulash, Wiener Schnitzel, and apple strudel. A complimentary dish of potato pancakes, sour cream, apple sauce and butter were brought to the table. In theory this would be very nice but the reality was the potato pancakes were dark brown, flat, and a little oil-soaked as they are every time. And every time I eat one I find the middle has undercooked potatoes so I’ve not finished a pancake yet. The salad was fresh and delicious, and came with a side of a very thick cream dressing. That was the best part of the meal. The frankfurter soup(I kid you not) and creamed corn soup were not good(no big surprise there). Veal Goulash is a meat stew that has pieces of fork-tender meat in a sauce containing paprika and sour cream. The goulash sauce was creamy but peppery and the spaetzel(pasta) was tasteless but the meat was very tender and plentiful. The schnitzel, fried veal cutlets, while crisp and tasty, had an aftertaste of dirty oil. They serve two pieces that are about 8 inches by 8 inches. I’ve never seen anyone finish a plate. The apple strudel looked great but didn’t taste fresh, It had a cinnamon paste around the apple pieces that was off-putting. The ‘whipped cream’ was some concoction that foamed down with time. The cheesecake and crêpe were ok and the coffee and tea were good. So Uncle Lui I know you are trying to love me the best that you can, and you did send us off with doggy bag souvenirs — that my family members will enjoy. I wish you well.

This is fairly authentic Hungarian fare. You do get A LOT of food for your money. Be sure to make a reservation. When you arrive not only do you get a bread basket but you also get a potato pancake! What a pleasant surprise. I thought the wait staff was very sweet even if they were a bit harried. Every table was full on a Saturday night. We then both had the corn chowder which I liked very much. My husband and I both had the hunter schnitzel. When you have hunter schnitzel you must have spaetzle. It’s perfect for soaking up the gravy. It was definitely more Hungarian due to the sour cream and the paprika. We couldn’t finish it all. I finished with the crepes and he had the struedel. Both were good. I recommend getting something besides water to drink. Filling the water glasses are not a top priority here which is fine on a busy night. Overall its a good value. Its always fun to try new cuisine. PS The strip mall where this place is located is a bit sketchy.

I met a few friends here on a Saturday night since they had eaten here before and we all wanted something very casual and inexpensive. This was my first experience partaking in Hungarian food and I was somewhat nervous about the portions at this restaurant. In the end, the portion size was the least of my worries. I arrived and my party was already seated which was nice. The waitress took a few minutes to greet us and ask for out drink orders. I was fully complacent with water; however, the water comes in a very small glass which translates to many refills(esp. since I had gone for a run shortly before dinner). I couldn’t decide what I wanted and then one of my friends announced that she was going to have a chicken dish which actually sounded kind of good. Once we were all ready to order, we sat there for almost ten minutes before the waitress took our order. I did choose the chicken and rice entrée. The entrees come with soup or salad and dessert so I cnose the salad. The food wasn’t bad and that’s really the only reason why this place didn’t get one star; the apple streudel wasn’t that great, though. The main issue I have with this place is that the service was horrible. The waitress hardly ever paid attention to us and when we asked for more water, napkins, etc. her facial expressions were not the most appropriate ones. She knew we were all very thirsty and instead of constantly going back and forth refilling our water glasses, we asked her to leave the pitcher. She replied,“No, I can’t do that b/c other tables need water.” Yet, approx. five minutes later, she dropped off a pitcher of water at our table. What? I was the only one that finished his/her meal so when we asked for boxes, she, once again, expressed unhappiness in having to fo get the boxes and brought out these really small boxes and we ended up having to ask for another one. This woman probably needs to change jobs b/c she obviously doesn’t like being a waitress. She needs a job where she has minimal or no contact with other human beings and she can blame all her misfortunes on the computer. Based on the horrible service and the unpleasantness that I experienced here, I wouldn’t go back.

I visited Uncle Lui’s again on Saturday. They were busy but we had a reservation(required). I must preface by saying they offer a lot of food, the food is good but it’s also very ethnic. It’s not necessarily something that I would crave or eat every other week because I didn’t grow up with it. I suppose it’s an acquired taste plus it was very much like a homecooked meal. However, with that being said the experience and quality were good. My veal goulash was tender and flavorful. The spatzel tasted better left over but maybe that’s because I didn’t pour the extra sauce they gave me over it. My boyfriend’s chicken paprikash was also tender and tasty. The bread is just regular bread. The soups were hearty and large. I had corn chowder which was tasty and not too thick. My boyfriend had barley, mushroom and chicken soup with quinoa which was also tasty. There are two sides of cream spinach and purple cabbage. I was in Germany and they had purple cabbage there. It’s sweet. The spinach was creamy and didn’t have much of a taste except for being slightly creamy spinachy… All the entrees come with bread, a drink(in addition to regular water), soup or salad, and dessert. I believe they also offer coffee or tea for free at the end of your meal. The cheesecake was delicious but my boyfriend thinks it’s from Publix! It was good. I had a crêpe which was fresh and tasty with a lemon taste. The other dessert we had before was apple strussel which is very German and kinda like an apple pie but in pastry form. I would recommend Uncle Lui’s but must say that if you’re not exposed to that kind of food, it may be a hit or a miss depending on your adventuresome palate, but you will definitely get large portions! Oh and yes, the menu is limited.
