R.I.P. This was probably Stockton’s premier sandwich shop. As close to Ike’s as we could get…

Today I heard that Big Fellows is going out of business… makes me so sad. My dad originally told me about this place not too long ago, and ever since then I go in every few weeks for one of their deliciously huge sandwiches. It’s definitely not in the best part of town, which is the only reason I gave four stars instead of five, but I love the hole-in-the-wall atmosphere. They had a bunch of Stockton Thunder stuff in there too, which was fun to see. I was never disappointed with the quality of food or the service. Not to mention the very first time I ever stepped foot in Big Fellows I was greeted by a super chipper guy who happily answered any of the questions I asked. I’ll miss you, Big Fellows!

We’ve stopped here a couple times for lunch and were definitely not disappointed. Big Fellows may look like a hole in the wall place, and it might even be a hole in the wall place but they make a really great sandwich. This is a local place with great service and great food, you can tell they care about their product and want you to have a good experience. I tried and loved the Everything. but there is something on the menu for anyone. The sandwiches cost a little more but they are big and packed with flavor!

These guys make GREAT sandwiches and the customer service is EXCELLENT!!! The weekly special sandwiches are such a good deal. They have Little or Big as sandwich size options. The Little is plenty even for this big boy.

This is such a great sandwich shop and a true blast from the past. From customer service to their food, everything is done right. By the time I left the owner was calling me by name and talking to me like an old friend. I had the pastrami sandwich and a rueben. Both were awesome samples of sandwich heaven but that pastrami is awesome! Definitely check this place out. They’re using Genova bakery sandwich rolls so you know the quality is up there! Kudos to them for utilizing great local products to make a fine sandwich!

Always solid. Staff takes pride in what they serve and you are treated warmly upon each visit. I used to go about once a week but since I no longer work close by it has been awhile. Glad to report that they did not disappoint. Pastrami was still just as awesome as I remember. I brought my father In law who informed the staff and patrons that it had ben close to thirty years since he had been there and it was still just as good. Really hard to go wrong when you take pride in your work and keep the locals happy. Great local spot. Oh yeah, they have a sort of hidden emu of sandwiches named after family and friends. I used to know most of them but now I have to ask when I go in. Some great sandwiches hidden in there.

Yes, sir I’ll take a ‘sir lancealot’! It’s basically a philly cheese steak, but with better meat. What I like about this place: no fuss, no mess. Big proportions. Don’t let the area or décor throw you off. Good place for a solid meal.

Pros: Good hefty sandwiches, excellent service, many choices, discount days for certain sandwiches Cons: Not In the best neighborhood, pricier than subway Fun: Watching«ladies of the night» walk by as you’re enjoying a sandwich and a side of fries.

Sparknotes version: huge servings, great service, great flavor, come once and come again. TLDR version: Dropped in today for some lunch. Gosh, just standing in line and smelling their food makes me salivate… You can only imagine how happy my stomach was when it got fed shortly after… I tried their Sir Lancelot and Dusty Burger… both of which were amazing. Their small Sir Lancelot is a good size but their large is HUMONGOUSSSSS!!! It’s larger than a footlong Subway I would say… and more worth your money(probably not as healthy but who cares.). The Dusty Burger is equally huge but in the opposite direction– it’s the thickest burger I’ve ever eaten(but then again I don’t go to a lot of fast food joints). Cat(Kat?) is the owner and she offered my friends and me a pastry that they have. I don’t remember what it’s called but it’s like a hybrid of a lemon bar + cheesecake + some awesome homemade goodness. The workers here are very friendly and know how to check up on their customers for feedback without being annoying/intrusive. I’d come back just because I like the vibe of this place. Besides, it doesn’t hurt to stop by to support a local restaurant! :]

Let’s start with the fact that I’m biased. I grew up on this place. I knew the original owner, Roger, and now I am getting to know the fantastic new owner, Kat or Cat, not sure. Even with the new ownership, everything remains true to the original sandwich shop. The only changes are the new menu board(but original menu) and the introduction of loyalty cards. Buy 10 sandwiches, get one free. The sammies are made on freshly baked french rolls from just up the street and the cuts of meat are very high quality. If you go here more than once, they will remember your name. They LOVE their customers and always have a warm welcome if you are a regular. At first, Big Fellows seems pricey, but once you realize how HUGE these grinders are and that tax is included in the menu price, you’ll see it’s very reasonable. Not to mention the fantastic quality. Everything on the menu is great, but I highly recommend the hot pastrami(french roll, mustard, pastrami and creamy swiss). This place has been around for 36 years for a reason. Lunch can get busy, so come early. The neighborhood has changed around the shop since it’s opening and you may not be used to south Stockton, but the owners maintain a very nice atmosphere within the shop. No better sandwich shop in Stockton Enjoy!

My bf brought me here because he said he used to come here all the time with his best friend but totally forgot about the place and was surprised I’ve never been here. Helllo it’s on wilson way, I don’t come out of my way to come to this area. haha VIBE/PLACE: Very mom and pop style. Had a sandwich making station with everything ready. There were firefighters on break eating sandwiches and talking to each other so felt kind of safe. +across the street there’s a liquor store and apparently if you sit at big fellows long enough you WILL see some hookers. I saw one and a guy on a bicycle with a dog in the basket got to have a conversation with her and she followed him for a bit. hmmmmm FOOD: It was either the reuben sandwich or SIRLANCELOT and I chose the latter and I believe it was a great choice! I got the small sized and it was about $ 9 I think(can’t quite recall). A little expensive. But the sandwich was juicy and whatever sauce they used was delicious. I think sauces are really important in sandwiches. I’m a glutton for them. Add in steak = MMMM + bf got the Roast beef sandwich. omg it was really big(that’s what I said) and like no veggies in it at all… It was pretty much stacks of meat bunched into a subway like bread/sandwich. The saving grace for this meaty, man-loving sandwich was the beef juice sauce that you can dip the manly sandwich in. Not my preference but bf loved it because so much meat and no veggies. Maybe there were caramelized onions PROS: +Juicy, saucy sir lancelot with good portions of everything inside +they pack their sandwiches CONS: +a little pricey, but the portions of their sandwiches probably make up for it +their little extras like jalapeño is 25 cents or so. aww +i dunno, it was hard to get the cashier and other worker’s attention for straws/forks/jalapeño –_– even though there were only 5 people in there total +wilson way is a little out of the way but there are some great hole in wall places VERDICT: well I’m glad I got to try this place once. Would definitely come here if craving an earl’s sandwich from vegas haha

I was making a favorites of Stockton list and went to put Big Fellows at the top and couldn’t believe I haven’t ever reviewed this place. I haven’t even checked in here. I frequent Big Fellows but get so distracted by the large menu, the anticipation of battered fried mushrooms and the game of Is that a hooker? On the drive there. I forget about Unilocal all together(hanging head in shame) haha I have tried so many of their sandwiches, even the basic grilled cheese is amazing. They have a special each day that is a little cheaper than the rest of the days. They close early and they are a little pricey but you get quality food and good quantity. I can’t wait for it to get cold again so they start making soups, they are amazing.

I attempted to go here and the place was closed and it looked all crazy like a bomb shelter we didn’t know wth was going on. «Is this place closed for good because their parking lot is closed too?» Anyway I still came back after the holiday used my groupon and jesus why haven’t I been coming in the first place?! I met Cat oneo f the owners and told her about the reaction of how they were closed up. She was super nice. I got a rueben sandwich and a sir lancelot. The sir lancelot is quite impressive by looks but that little rueben sandwich … pretty much stole my heart. I feel in love with it and thinking if I ate that everyday I’d probably die.(Rueben sandwich has corned beef, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese, with a dressing, grilled between slices of rye bread) it’s even more amazing with mustard. Great sandwiches I’ll be back to try the falafel! There is lots of parking and real close neighborhood parking as well if the lot is full. The place is really easy to find off of Wilson Way. It’s on the corner so you won’t miss it! They have daily specials and cater as well and have all this good stuff on their site as well as coupons you can check it out here

My friend had a group-on($ 8 for $ 16 worth of food!) so we had to go back to try the crab cake sandwich again! This time, they had alfalfa sprouts! So we got crab cake sandwich with lettuce, tomato, avocado, yellow peppers, alfalfa sprouts.(no mayo) We also got the salmon burger(no mayo) and an order of fries. :) The crab cake was just as crispy, juicy, and piping hot as I remembered it! I love alfalfa sprouts so i loved having them in the sandwich! the melting avocado, with the crispiness of the veggies against the hot, juicy, crispy crab cakes – delish! The salmon burger came with lettuce and tomato. I think if I were to get this next time, I’d add some more veggies, like extra lettuce, tomatoes, and yellow peppers. It was still yummy, but id rather get another crab cake sandwich! :P Also, the fries were a little bland and dry… and I was full by the time I finished half of the crab cake and salmon burger, so that might have added to why I didn’t really eat any. But they still get 5 stars because I love crab cake, and they are so friendly and accomodating! :D

Big Fellows, how very strategic of you to give me a frequent buyer stamp card. Not only are the sandwiches fantastic, but now I want to come back X10 for that free 11th sandwich. The woman at the counter was quite possibly the nicest woman I’ve ever encountered. She addressed my friend and I by name at least 5 times. She also offered to put mushrooms on the side, after hearing my friend and I discuss my dislike in mushrooms and her love of mushrooms. My friend and I split the Sir Lancelot and the crab cake sandwich. The Sir Lancelot came with steak, tomato, lettuce, and light mayo, all bundled into a yummy Genova milk roll. Admittedly, this one was not my favorite. While it was delicious, the meat cooked perfectly and the proportions of meat: veggie:sauce was just right, it did not compare to the crab cake sandwich. One bite out of the crab cake sandwich, and my eyes teared up as my mouth burned. Ya’ know what? I didn’t care! I just kept eating away because the sandwich was delicious. The crab cake was warm and crispy, just out of the deep fryer. It was juicy on the inside and was complimented well with green peppers. I would have loved to try this with alfalfa sprouts, but unfortunately they were out today. Nonetheless, the sandwich was perfect and definitely reinforced my desire to come back 10 more times. I will be back for more!
