Great view of the city, NJ and Brooklyn. Incredible amounts of tourists that don’t know anything about personal space. The ferry takes about 30 min to get from one dock to the next which is horrible especially when you have to take the SIR home which is pretty long

I hated every minute of this ferry trip. I think for what it is, it’s probably fine. But if you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty and take pictures off the side of the ferry, I recommend something entirely different. The ferry was overcrowded and everyone on board seemed to know which side of the boat to be on to get a good view of the sites because as soon as the boat began to leave dock, everyone ran to one side, leaving no room for me! I was disappointed.
We didn’t want to even disembark, but rather take it back right away, hoping to get on the right side of the ferry to take pictures on our return trip. To no avail. Everyone must disembark and wait in line again at the port authority for 15 minutes for the next ferry to come to dock.
Too crowded, no views, gross boats, but it’s free! There’s way too many other things to do while visiting NYC –I won’t be wasting my time on this ferry again!

It’s a lovely 30 minute ride across the Bay. If you would like to see the statue of Liberty, as you enter the ferry make sure you grab a seat on the right side going from NYC to Staten Island and then left side for the return trip.
It’s such a pleasant trip with lots of seats and I would highly recommend it! The weekend schedule has it running every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day!

The best ride in town, not only is free but you get amazing views of the city, harbor, brooklyn and Verrazano bridge. I love this ride better then liberty cruises. Always bring a camera to get some amazing shots of the lower manhattan skyline and lady liberty. I have to say that being at the front of the line really allowed me to pick a good location on either side of the boat. I also noticed that the boat sells beer and most people were consuming beer while walking around the ferry and sight seen. I was too busy with my camera to bother with that but maybe next time i will check it out.

It’s FREE! Besides that, there’s not really any reason to go to Staten Island — the ferry’s probably the best part. It leaves every half an hour on the weekend, every fifteen minutes on the weekdays I believe. There’s not much to do on Staten Island, so I’d suggest just taking the ferry there and back for the view of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty (although if you’re already planning a visit to Liberty Island, Staten Island ferry can be skipped). Ferry’s pretty comfortable, lots of seating. Takes about 25 minutes for the trip.

This is a great way to get a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan on the cheap.
I recommend you go around sunset time. See the Manhattan skyline and lady liberty at night on the way back is beautiful.
The ferry leaves from South Ferry metro exit and goes to Staten Island. Once your there you can enjoy the view and head back when it’s dark. They leave every 30 minutes from each side.
This ferry is completely FREE and sells some food and drinks on board.

First things first, this is my daily commute, I am not a tourist. But I can see why this is a fantastic and free way to tour the harbor. The boats are huge so there’s always enough room. Generally speaking they are every 30 minutes on the hour (8pm 8:30pm etc) or every 15 minutes during rush hour.
Depending on the time they are very strict about the doors. If they are able to, they will close the doors in your face at 8:00pm on the dot which sucks because then you have to wait 30 minutes in the terminal before you can start your commute. This is why you see people running like crazy towards the terminal, they don’t want to miss their boat! But during rush hour, because there are so many people trying to get on the boats, they are a bit more flexible in their timing.
The terminal itself is getting better but still full of junk food — which depending on who you are might be a bonus. You can get Wendy’s, pizza, pretzels, ice cream, chicken wings, potato chips, etc, etc, etc. They also sell a lot of beer/​wine/​coolers. This is the perfect booze cruise. You can buy an extra large tall boy for dirt cheep in the terminal or on the ferry and drink while you ride. There’s also a farmers market here every Tuesday and Friday with apples, fresh veggies, cider, baked treats, honey and fresh plants.
Most boats have limited outdoor seating on the top level so if you’re here for the view, take the stairs up as soon as you get on the boat. From the Manhattan side you’ll want to be on the right hand side of the boat to get the view of the Statue of Liberty. This is also the sunny side of the boat so if us locals can stand it we will try to sit out here too especially in the summer so it does get crowded. Oh and if you want to get a photo of the lady — your cell phone isn’t going to cut it. She’ll look like a Polly Pocket if you try to take a photo with your phone camera. Bring the real deal with a telephoto if you want the best shot.
If you want to avoid the crowds and still get a great photo, head to the basement of the boat and walk straight out the back doors. It’s more industrial and loud from the engines, there is usually no sunshine either but you’ll get a great photo with zero tourists bumping into you. The basement is where the locals sit to avoid you lol
You can almost always get a seat on the boat which is great for after you’ve taken your photos you can just chill and enjoy the 25 minute ride with your beer. Now here’s the big trick, right now there’s not much to do in Staten Island when you get off the boat. There are a few great restaurants but until the Wheel and Empire Outlets open most people will just turn around to go back to Manhattan. They have been known to time the exits and departures to trap you in the Staten Island ferry terminal for 30 minutes so that you shop there (same stuff as the other side, junk food, trinkets, etc) so don’t dilly dally. You must exit and re-​board the boat (stops homeless people from living on it) so make sure to be one of the first people off the boat so you can walk around the terminal and definitely get on the same boat going back.

Free ride every 30 minutes around the Statute of Liberty. There is absolutely nothing to do at Staten Island so you just get off and get back on again.

I love to take the ferry. It’s really a privilege to enjoy this lovely ride from SI to Manhattan or vice-​versa. It’s relaxing and serene with unbeatable views of the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan. You can enjoy an enormous can of beer and nachos or popcorn from the stand on this 20 minute ride. It’s especially romantic when the harbor is foggy. One time two coast guard boats followed the ferry I was on all the way to Manhattan, machine guns ready. …WEIRD.
I do get annoyed with the occasional rush-​hour selfish person who stores their 54 bags on the seats next to them when there are few seats available for actual people to sit in, or the ever-​present loud headphone music listener, but hey, you can’t win them all.

What an experience! Now I’m not using it to commute to work, so this review is solely for touristic purposes. The ferry can be quite crowded, but you get stunning views of the harbor and the city. You board through the ferry terminal, which is really easy and just a walk-​on since it’s free and doesn’t require a ticket. It leaves right on the dot usually so if you’re late, you have to catch the next one in about half an hour.
The ferries are large, with 3 – 4 floors. Some boats have an outdoor railing area while others are almost fully enclosed (although you can go toward the back of the ship and get an unimpeded view that way.
The most spectacular aspect of the ride is the view of the Statue of Liberty, Downtown Manhattan, and the panoramic of Jersey City, Downtown Manhattan, and Brooklyn with their connecting bridges. Very unique. You also can see Ellis Island.
The Staten Island Ferry Terminal is not the greatest, but you do have to get off the boat and re-​board. Definitely worth an hour of your time to make this trip even if you plan to do the Statue and Ellis Island cruise.

If I told you there was a free cruise around the Statue of Liberty with amazing sunset views of the Manhattan and Jersey City skyline, and only $ 5 beers, you would probably not believe me. Well, it exists, and it’s the Staten Island Ferry.

While this ferry is free and has the best views of the Statue of Liberty there are, I was expecting something pretty different. Being from Seattle, I am used to ferries that transport cars and passengers. This ferry was passenger only, and I knew that, but I was still expecting the exterior of the decks to be open air. That wasn’t the case unfortunately, so on 2 of the 3 decks, pictures must be taken through crowded windows. You really have to get your camera right up to the window so the fingerprints don’t show up in your photograph.
I really can’t complain though. I saved tons of money by doing this as opposed to taking a ferry to the actual Statue of Liberty. It was fun to get a quick taste of Staten Island before heading back to Manhattan.
Be sure to pass by Battery Park afterwards! It’s right next to the terminal in Manhattan and offers great views and relaxation, a nice retreat from the crowded ferry.

It’s free! We had planned to book a Lady Liberty cruise until someone told us about the Staten Island ferry which gives a perfectly good view of the Statue of Liberty, though it may not come as close as some of the cruises. To us, it was no big deal and everything is always better when it’s free. You also get a great view of downtown Manhattan.
The boat is huge and there is plenty of good seating.

Two Questions for you:
1. Do you have about an hour to ride back and forth from Manhattan to Staten Island to experience some of the most amazing views of New York City?
2. Do you like things in New York City that are, ahem, Free?
If you answered yes to both of these questions, make sure to take a trip down to the Whitehall Station, just south of the financial district and catch the Staten Island Ferry for a ride you won’t soon forget.
You will stand in line and yes, you will debate whether or not you should wait in that line because it is so long and seemingly unorganized. However, this ferry runs like a finely tuned clock. On the top and half of every hour, the doors open and you spend only a few minutes filing onto the boat.
If you’re departing from Manhattan, gravitate towards the upper observation deck in the back of the boat. That is where you will experience some of the most amazing views of the city’s skyline you will ever see. What is great is to take photos or video as you get further and further away to add a variety of shots to your pictures portfolio.
Heading to Staten Island look to your left about 5 minutes into your cruise and you’ll see Lady Liberty and all of her majesty. For best pictures travel in the morning, so the sun will be on your face as you stand next to the railing and pose.
Once you arrive at the Staten Island station, you will be required to disembark, then get back in the long line. Of course, you could do like I did and grab a quick coffee as you wait for your trip back to Manhattan.
For the ride back, I recommend sitting on the port side of the ferry (that’s the left) to get more of a broad view of the Statue of Liberty. Sitting on the same observation deck (now facing forward) will be a bit breezy and if its 50 degrees or less, you might freeze your face off.
We had a pleasant surprise when we arrived back in Manhattan as a small farmers market was there with amazing prices on their produce. In total, we were gone for a little over an hour, but it was a ride that my wife, my kids and myself will not forget, ever.

The Staten Island Ferry is THE ferry between Manhattan Island and Staten Island. For residents of either isle, the boats serve as a 30-​minute free ride between two of New York’s five boroughs.
For tourists, this is the cheapest way to see the Statue of Liberty or the city skyline from the water. I was among a horde of the latter. Our experience on the Staten Island Ferry was worth every penny we didn’t pay.
If you are staying in Manhattan, then the old saying «the journey is the destination» is so true when it comes to the Staten Island Ferry. As soon as the ship arrived at Staten Island, the crowd of tourists (me included) swarmed en-​masse to escape the island on the next ferry returning to Manhattan. The mob swelled from a brisk walk to a near sprint through the terminal to catch the next free ferry. We made it. Everyone made it. Time spent on Staten Island? 90 seconds.

What’s not to love about FREE?! One can spend hundreds of dollars a day in Manhattan. I know, I’ve done it. Several times over. A FREE ferry ride with stunning views of the skyline, The Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, cruise ships, helicopters, sunrises, sunsets and Brooklyn?! Umm, oh yes! This has been on my to do list for awhile now. I’m so glad we finally made the trip.
I’ve done the twilight and sunset, booze and cruise tours and they are great. They can also very pricey. For a family a four, or anyone really, this is a great way to catch a sunset, see some sights and take a quick, leisurely trip. Sure the ferry doesn’t go SO close to the «Lady Liberty», but you see her in all her glory and she’s marvelous. Every time.
The ferry is mostly clean except for some of the scratchy windows. It has room and seats for everyone and is easy. It runs every 30 minutes and is about the same in length of time for the one way trip. You must get off in Staten Island even if you just want to return back to Manhattan. You can just get off and board again. Silly I guess but it allows everyone to have a fair chance.
There are some things to do right there in SI besides admire stunning Manhattan in the distance. There’s a 911 memorial, a mosaics tour and a few restaurants. One with fresh lobsters too.
If you want to see the Statue Of Liberty best, sit on the right side as you board in Manhattan.
I’m not sure how they can afford to keep this ship running, but I think it’s just awesome. Philly could learn a thing or two from NYC in this aspect.
** If you take the 1, it’s your last stop and they will say South Ferry but you must be seated in the first 5 cars to catch it!
**Oh, and there will be people trying to get you to go on their company’s tours which can run you from $ 28-​$ 35 a person. That’s fine if that’s what you want to do but don’t let the pressure you. You really came all the way down here for your FREE ride, so go get it. Don’t let them intimidate or trick you. Smile and keep walking. Act like a street smart New Yorker, it’s fun!

The Staten Island Ferry is free & is the best way to see the NYC skyline & Statue of Liberty! You get pretty close to Lady Liberty therefore you will not be disappointed. The Ferry itself was clean on the inside and right on schedule. I was there simply for the views, so I did not venture off to Staten Island but maybe next time I will.

I love that this is free. I hop on every time I come to NY. I can’t believe the views you get of the Manhattan skyline, of the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty.

The Staten Island provides excellent photo-​ops of New York Harbor, Governor’s and Ellis Islands and Lower Manhattan. The greatest perk of all? Everything is completely free! It’s great to see our tax money going towards public transportation that provides both a comfortable ride and a visually appealing experience.
Both terminals (Whitehall & St. George) have gone through recent renovations, so everything is pretty much up-​to-​date and modern. The Whitehall Street terminal is equipped with several food options including Wendy’s and newsstands, while the St. George terminal is equipped with a Subway’s sandwiches. Both terminals provides restrooms and an abundance of seating and free wifi. The St. George terminal even has two fish tanks with exotic fishes!
Overall, I always enjoy my experiences when I ride the Staten Island Ferry and hopefully I’ll catch a nice sunset to update my Instagram profile with!

This is one of the best ways to check out the Manhattan Skyline as well as the Statue of Liberty from the water. All for Nothing… The service is provided between Lower Manhattan and Staten Island. You can check the schedule online, but usually these ferries run about every 30 min. You get to the terminal, you wait for the doors to open and there you go… along with hundreds of others…
You board the ferry and it has many levels/​decks to choose from… some with indoor seating, some with outdoor seating. The ride takes about 30 minutes, and once you get to Staten Island, all you have to do is get off, and make a right into the terminal area for your ride back to Manhattan… it would be the same vessel, and it would leave like 5 minutes after your arrival.
Very easy, very convenient, very nice way to check out the sights from a great vantage point on the water…

Only thing my friends and I did notice was there was no clear monitoring numbers on the ferry, just a mad rush by the crowd as the doors opened

We chose a perfect day to catch the Staten Island Ferry. We caught the NY subway and basically walked around the corner. The waiting area was crowded and I feared we would have to catch the next ferry, but to our advantage the ferry is huge and there was much room. We sat outside on the open decks and we were able to take in all the views of New York and the Statue of Liberty. Once we reached Staten Island after a 15 – 20 min ride, you can venture into Staten Island or walk around and catch the ferry back to NY, but we venture into Staten Island to view the city. The Staten Island Ferry is a free boat ride to see some of the same sites as paid tours.

For some this is a lifeline, professionally or socially. It’s a tourist destination all ought to go to. They’ve been progressively adding more food options of various quality and there’s even an art space as of last year.

I’m usually only in NYC every few years, but every time I go, I take the Staten Island Ferry — back and forth. A) it’s FREE. B) it goes right past the Statue of Liberty (photo ops galore). 3) it comes right back to Manhattan with insane views of lower Manhattan/​Brooklyn Bridge. Don’t bother with a 4-​hour Manhattan boat tour for ?$, take the ferry for free. Beer prices are great too, by comparison to bars/​restaurants. At least they were last time I went.

Whether you’re visiting New York or you’re a commuter. The Staten Island Ferry is the way to go. Best of all, it’s free. It runs all day long, back and forth. It also runs on weekends. Check online for all schedules and times.
For visitors, it’s a good way to do a couple of things. First, it gets you off your feet for about an hour if you go across and back. Second, it gets you some good photo ops of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. And also, if you’ve got kids with you, they can say they were on a boat.
Once you are on, there’s plenty of seating or you can stand by the windows if you like. When the weather is nicer, the windows are open. There’s also a small little snack bar with drinks and some snack food that are available for purchase.
Would I go back? Absolutely. It’s one of the cooler things that we’ve done when we’ve visited. For all the reasons I mentioned above. But again, best of all, it’s totally free.

I can’t believe this service is free. There’s plenty of room for everyone in line so don’t worry! Once you board the ferry, you have a choice of sitting inside or opening a door to the balcony. The door can be tricky — push the lever down with force. It’s also a great place to meet people from all over the world.
The best time to go is around sunset. The ferry provides breathtaking views of the south seaport, Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty.
The coolest part about the ferry? The flock of seagulls that hover above like little pilots guiding the way.

Anyone who lives in or has visited NYC knows how expensive life can be. Even getting around is getting pricier all the time, from rising subway fares to that blasted Über surge pricing. Thank goodness for this one form of high quality transportation that’s absolutely free! Yup, it’s completely free for anyone. It comes often and on schedule. And if you’re not in a big rush, it’s a lovely way to see some lovely views. People pay big bucks for cruises with views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline, but you can get this for free ninety-​nine any time you like! It can get a big crowded with commuters, but I’ve always been able to find a seat… the boat is huge. It’s a really great part of the city and unfortunately one that most people don’t take advantage of. Give it a shot!

We decided to ride the ferry because it seemed like the best way to see a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty for free. After exiting the Metro and trying to enter the ferry terminal we were bombarded by a group of men aggressively trying to sell tour tickets. Avoid them! They continued their inappropriate banter even as we walked away.
The terminal is large with clean public restrooms, and multiple fast food options. The ferries depart every thirty minutes and the embark and disembark process is extremely quick and efficient. People start lining up as the ferry approaches, so if you see this happening, quickly get in line on the right hand side. The right side of the ferry faces the Statue of Liberty on the way to Staten Island.
We chose to climb the stairs to the roof level and stand up against the railing on the back corner of the boat– we figured everyone would crowd towards the middle and that is exactly what happened. We were barely disturbed by selfie takers on the back corner of the boat.
You don’t get very close to Ellis Island, but it was close enough to take decent photos. We were also able to get excellent photos of the skyscrapers as we pulled away from the port.
We researched Staten Island beforehand and didn’t see anything worth staying on the island for. We exited the boat and immediately looped around to the line to board again. This time we stood on the back corner on the left side of the boat to view the Statue of Liberty again on the return trip.
We thoroughly enjoyed the free trip through the bay and the views of the city scape and the Statue of Liberty. This is definitely a fun, free activity if you’re looking for something to do.

Any tourist going to New York has absolutely no excuse for not taking the Staten Island Ferry. Remember — you’re not taking it because Staten Island is a must see destination, you’re taking it because you get to sail past the Statue of Liberty for free (yes there is actually something free in New York that you’d want to do) and get one of the best views of Manhattan in the process with the new One World Trade dominating the skyline.
If you luck out (it was a shame that we didn’t either way but it didn’t ruin our trip) you can get on one of the ferries with a great deal of outside viewing areas — ours was totally enclosed with the exception of some roped off areas. But we timed it just right — we headed over to Staten Island in the day time and as we came back it turned to night so we got all the lights (presumably from all the poor office workers who were still hard at work).
If you do one thing in New York when you visit, do the Staten Island Ferry. Just head to the South Ferry Metro station from wherever you are and then walk the twenty feet into the terminal. Services are frequent and easy. I came to New York 14 years ago and didn’t do this, and I’ve felt like a complete moron ever since, and I’m so happy now that I’ve finally done it.

Really, how many other places offer a free ferry service with a beautiful scenic view. I’ve been to many cities and countries, and you really can’t find many.
This ferry takes you from St. George in Staten Island to Whitehall in Manhattan, NY.
Living in NYC, the use of public transportation is certainly a must but the ferry is the best bet. The station on both sides has over gone a tremendous facelift over the past decade or two. Both facilities are very clean and connect to trains and buses alike. Travelling from Staten Island, sitting on your left hand side will give you a great view of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Jersey skyline. From Staten Island on your right you can get a view of the Verrazono and Governors Island. Directly across from the terminal on the Staten Island side you can also get an amazing view of the city skyline.
Seats aren’t too comfy but the ride is a smooth one. I believe it only takes about 20 minutes. In the winter you certainly want a seat inside for the balconies are very cold from the wind blowing through the harbor. Be mindful of the Ferry schedule also so you don’t catch the best ferry over for you. Service varies between certain times.

I got to the terminal, looked around for a ticket booth or some sort of indication of ticket price etc, nothing. So I looked online at their site, «The ferry is free», I was very surprised and also pumped!
The ferry to Staten Island only had indoor seating with crappy windows, not great for taking pictures through. The ferry back to Manhattan had an outdoor deck on the upper level which was perfect for a boat journey. A nice breeze, sounds of the water and perfect for taking pictures.
It’s about a 20 minute journey each way, you can get off and then straight on to the next ferry to take you back, resulting in about a 50 – 60 minute round trip.

Awesome place to go if you are visiting NY.
This is a free ferry that will take you to Staten Island AND gives you a great view of the Statue of Liberty. Another plus is that you will be able to see the lower Manhattan skyline as you leave to Staten Island or when you come back into Manhattan.

Not to be confused with Weird Al’s «Spatula Island Ferry», or the famous Lightning-​storm boat (The Static Island Ferrt). Whereas the Scrapple Island Ferry is tasty but unhealthy. And the Splatter Island Ferry has both a lot of horror movies, and a lot of porn movies filmed on it. The Scatter Island Ferry is all over the place and you never know where it’s sailing from. As for the the Release The Kraken Island Ferry, I have no idea what that is, but I keep hearing it. Something to do with Clash Of The Titties from 1981?
Why the Staten Island Ferry is one of the coolest experiences in New York City:
(1) First and foremost, it’s free. In a city where «nothing is free», this is. Enough said.
(2) The views of Manhattan as you leave or arrive in Downtown, are unrivalled and spectacular.
(3) The views of the Statue Of Liberty and Ellis Island are impossible to match without paying a bunch of money and actually touring Liberty and Ellis Island.
(4) The views of the Verrazano-​Narrows Bridge as you pull into Staten Island are sensational.
(5) The ferry terminals are huge and spacious and cool.
(6) The boats are packed with commuters and tourists alike and are a true quintessential NYC experience.
(7) There is no #7 but what more do you f***ing need really?
The only thing they could do better is 24 hour sailings, but when you’re getting a free ride every half an hour with beautiful views, and can literally stay on these things all day if you want to, without ever paying a penny (homeless people take note, no joke), how can anyone complain?
And in case you’re thinking of a slightly different ferry. The Staten Iris Ferry will leave you with sore eyes. The Staten ISIS Ferry is at risk from terrorism so skip it. The Staten Isotope Ferry is filled with boring Scientists and Radiologists (which are also Scientists) so skip it. The Staten Isobar Ferry is subject to bad weather. The Staten Isla Bonita Ferry plays 80s Madonna hits over and over, and hence, is not a fun ferry for me. Whereas the Staten Isla Fisher Ferry is fun if you like Isla Fisher, but not everyone does. And the Staten Isoceles Ferry goes in a triangle-​shaped route for some reason. And finally, the Staten Ins*mination Ferry is what you ride if you really want to become a mother or father.
Personally, I’ll stick to the Staten Island Ferry.
Although not literally, because it might be dangerous. Especially if you’re stuck to a part of the boat that is being dragged under the water. And how do you stick a human to a ferry anyway.

not sure why people crowd at the station entrance waiting for da boat every 30 minutes or 15 during morning and evening rush hours. people run onto the boat like it’s the last subway car home. there’s always seats available as this floating freebie is pretty big. i laugh every time people try to trample each other to get on the boat. #chillax be easy.
the boat itself is relatively clean. multi-​levelled with seats around the perimeter and inside of the speedy tugboat. during the warmer months, it’s nice to sit outside and look at the various angles of Manhattan, Staten Island, and Statue of Liberty. Great photo opps for you shutter bugs. The water is kinda gross, but that’s par for the course in NYC.
there are a couple of vendors who serve food and beer. the boat is BYOB, so yes you can DRINK on the boat. it’s not that expensive. beer is served in cans, bagged. while you can drink on the boat, drink responsibly… there are often cops on the boat and if you act up and start pulling shenanigans… you catch a ticket or an arrest. #warning That said you can also buy beer at either the St. George or Whitehall terminal and bring beer onboard. There’s more selection at the terminals obvi. DRAAANKS. in terms of food, i wouldn’t risk it, but i think there are sandwiches etc. you might be better off buying from the terminal rather on the boat itself. however it’s your stomach, so a case of the poops it is!
the crowd? pretty mixed. work folks, tourists, miscreants, rando weirdos.
the folks who run the boat are awesome. they are concerned with your safety after all those ferry crashes of the past. they are super helpful and working to make sure the ferry remains on schedule.
so it is a luxury experience? no. who cares… it’s free and a fun way to travel to a Staten Island Yankees game – the Yanks play near the St. George terminal. you looking for a Carnival Cruise Line experience, ask your FERRY Godmother! #seewhatididthere

How can you deny this business five stars?
They just gave you a kick a$$ ride from NY to Staten Island with a view of the famous Statue of Liberty for zero dollars. They offered rides every half hour on Memorial Day too which was even better. They have a whole station for you to wait in and offer semi clean bathrooms too.

Eine äußerst beliebte Sehenswürdigkeit ist die Staten Island Ferry, die Manhattan zu Wasser mit Staten Island verbindet. Die Fahrt beginnt in New York City an der Whitehall Street in der Nähe des Battery Parks und endet beim Saint George Ferry Terminal in Staten Island. Die Fähre kann man bequem mit der Underground erreichen.
Die neun Doppelendfähren können seit 1997 von den Passagieren kostenfrei genutzt werden. Diesen Service nutzen jährlich über 19 Millionen Fahrgäste. Die Fährverbindung verläuft über die Upper New York Bay und die 5 Meilen lange Überfahrt dauert ca. 22 Minuten.
Seit den Anschlägen vom 11. September 2001 dürfen die Schiffe aufgrund von Sicherheitsmaßnahmen ausschließlich als Personenfähren genutzt werden. Der letzte Zwischenfall ereignete sich am 15. Oktober 2003, als eine der Fähren mit dem Pier des Saint George Ferry Terminals zusammenstieß und 11 Passagiere ums Leben kamen.
Die Fähre ist eine günstige Gelegenheit, um schöné Erinnerungsfotos von Manhattan zu schießen. Auch der Freiheitsstatue kommt man recht nahe. Die Fähre an sich bietet keinen weiteren besonderen Komfort. Allerdings kann man sich am Terminal mit Essen und Trinken ausreichend versorgen.
Vom New Yorker Terminal ist man nur einen Steinwurf vom Battery Park entfernt, wo die Fähren nach Liberty Island und Ellis Island starten. Die Wall Street, das Museum of the American Indian und der Park Bowling Green mit dem Charging Bull ist bequem zu Fuß erreichbar.

Un ferry pour les locaux, qui fait le lien entre Manhattan et Staten Island. Il est gratuit. Si, si gratuit. Ca dure une petite demi heure, et vous avez une des plus belles vues sur Manhattan, Ellis Island et la Statue de la Liberté. Né vous mettez pas à l’étage (le peu de touristes présents y sont aglutinés), mais privilégiez le rez de chaussée, juste à côté du ponton d’embarquement.
deuxième tuyau: prenez le en fin d’après midi, pour avoir l’aller de jour, prenez un café dans le port à Staten Island et revenez de nuit ! La vue est imprenable !

Wenn man in New York ist, sollte man eine Fahrt mit der Staten Island Ferry nicht verpassen. Sie ist glücklicherweise noch nicht so extrem überlaufen und vor allem bekommt man kostenloses Sightseeing. Für eine Bootsfahrt zahlt man bei den Touristenbooten zwischen 20 und 45 Dollar und sieht auch nicht viel mehr. Wir hatten einen Sightseeing Pass und haben daher auch das New York Water Taxi und eine Schoner-​Fahrt gemacht und mehr hat man dabei auch nicht gesehen. Mit dem Wassertaxi kam man zwar etwas näher ran, aber was machen bei so einer großen Statue schon 50 Meter aus. Natürlich bleibt die Fähre da nicht stehen zum Fotos machen, aber sie fährt auch eher gemächlich, dass man immernoch etwas sieht.
Außerdem sitzt man auf dieser Fähre zwischen lauter Pendlern, die zur Arbeit fahren und nicht zwischen lauter Touristen, die genauso auf die Statue starren wie man selbst. Das macht natürlich auch die Atmosphäre des ganzen völlig anders.
Und man kann mal die Gelegenheit nutzen, durchzuatmen und mal einen Tag oder ein paar Stunden in Staten Island verbringen, dort gibt es so gut wie keine Touristen und vor allem ist es hier deutlich ruhiger als in Manhattan.
Wenn ihr mal nach New York kommt, solltet ihr das NICHT verpassen. Absolute 5 Sterne!

La visite incontournable de New York! Une très belle vue du sud de Manhattan et sûrement la meilleure de la statue de la liberté! Le seul regret? On nous avait dit une croisière de 90 min, on a même pas eu une heure!

Voir la statue de la liberté pour une première visite à New York ça me semble incontournable, juste inimaginable de passé à coté. J’insiste sur le «voir» et pas forcément «monter» à l’intérieur.
Le ferry de Staten Island est exactement ce qu’il me fallait et plus encore. Atout majeur c’est qu’il est 100% gratuit. En prenant le métro, il faut s’arrêter à la station «South Ferry». A partir de ce point, c’est très simple de se diriger puisqu’on atterri instantanément vers la petite gare qui sert à son embarcation.
Il navigue quasiment en continu avec des intervalles de 20 à 30 min de passages selon l’horaire (le laps est réduit aux heures de pointe, mais c’est plus agréable de le prendre en dehors).
Il mets environ une demi heure pour rejoindre Manhattan à Staten Island, ce qu’il faut pour passer tranquillement à proximité de la grande dame et sur le retour, d’être gratifié d’une large vision de la skyline de Downtown.

Schöné Fahrt mir der kostenlosen Staten Island Ferry, dieses Vergnügen ist für je NY Touristen ein muß. Man sollte aber unbedingt warme Kleidung dabeihaben denn die Fähre braust ganz schön los !! Aber man hat während hin.- und Rückfahrt einen einmaligen Blick auf Liberty Island und die atemberaubende Skyline von Manhattan. Auf der Fahrt von und nach Staten Island gibt es keine nennenswerte Catering, aber das stört nicht. Der Ausblick entschädigt für ALLES !!! Die Fähre geht alle 30 min. Unbedingt den Fotoapparat mitnehmen.

C’est sûr, on né fait pas le tour des deux îles (Liberty Island et Ellis Island) mais on économise 30 $ (2 mojitos). (D’autant plus qu’en ce moment, les deux îles sont fermées suite à la tempête de début d’année.)
Ce ferry, c’est LE bon plan pour voir Manhattan et la Skyline depuis la mer. Mais attention, en journée il y a du monde, beaucoup de monde!

Wer Manhatten von der Wasserseite sehen möchte, sollte unbedingt eine Tour nach Staten Island mit der Fähre machen.
Direkt an der Südspitze von Manhatten fahrt sie ab und das genialste dabei ist, sie ist komplett KOSTENFREI! Wo gibt es denn sowas noch?!
Ok, die Fähren sind nicht schön und meist auch ziemlich voll, aber dafür hat man eine nette Bootsfahrt, die auch noch sehr nahe an der Freiheitstatue vorbeifährt und man tolle Fotomotive bekommt.
So kann man sich auch den Besuch der stählernen Lady sparen, da diese Touren eh meist überfüllt sind und auch nicht ganz günstig.
Der Blick auf die Stadt, bei guten Wetter, ist sensationell. Also die Digi-​Cams immer griffbereit halten.

Die Fähre ist mehr als lohnenswert. Nicht weil kostenlos und in großer häufigkeit, nein der Blick auf Manhattan, Liberty Island mit der Statue und vieles mehr sind ebenso ein wirkliches erlebnis, wie das new yorker treiben an bord während der rushhour. und zeit mitnehmen, denn Staten Island zeigt New york von einer ganz anderen seite!

Dieser wird jedoch, das muss ich zugeben, in fast jedem bessern Reiseführer erwähnt! Die Staten Island Ferry ist, eine öffentliche, kostenlose Verkehrverbindung der Superlative.
60.000 Fahrgäste täglich, 109 Fahrten an jedem Montag bis Freitag, 75 Fahrten an jedem Samstag und Sonntag, in den rush hours jede 15 min, durch die Nacht verkehrt jede Stunde eine Fähre. Obendrein wird einem bei der Fahrt auch noch eine tolle Aussicht auf Miss Liberty.

die, wie viele Touristen (aus dem Reiseführer), aber nur wenige Ami’s wissen als ein Geschenk des französischen Volkes, 1886 hier aufgestellt wurde.

Völlig surreal und einfach nur toll!!! Unbeschreiblich wenn Manhattan nur noch eine kleine Insel voller Wolkenkratzer wird. Am besten steht man auf der Hinfahrt draußen ganz hinten Und auf der Rückfahrt vorne. Man hat auch guten Blick auf Lady Liberty, da braucht es gar keine teure Tour zu ihr hin. Mein Tipp:
Unbedingt mit einem Blick von oben (z.B. Top of the Rock kombinieren.

C’est un peu la cohue pour y entrer et il n’y a pas grand chose à faire sur Staten Island pour attendre le prochain ferry pour rentrer sur Manhattan, mais ce petit périple vaut largement le détour !

Man muss sich allerdings beeilen, sobald man in Staten Island ankommt, dass man die Fähre zurück bekommt! Dafür muss man von der ankommenden Fähre runter und am anderen Ende des Gebäudes auf die abfahrende Fähre wieder rauf! Das war uns nicht direkt klar… und so saßn wir eine Stunde aus Staten Island fest…

Oui c’est gratuit, oui on y voit de chouettes vues de Manhattan mais non, si vous voulez voir la Statue de la Liberté faut payer. Personnellement j’ai hésité à prendre un bateau payant pour voir la Statue mais une fois sur place on se rend compte que la vue depuis le ferry est minable.
Moi ce que j’ai bien aimé c’est être à l’arrière du ferry (pour mieux prendre les photos) et aussi les méduses. Bah oui, j’en avais jamais vu d’aussi grosses d’aussi près.
Bön, une fois arrivés sur Staten Island… il né vous reste plus qu’à attendre le prochain ferry pour repartir.

Cela né coute en plus absolument rien: c’est GRATUIT! et pas besoin de faire la queue: il y a un ferry toute les 30 minutes. A faire absolument si vous visitez NYC. Vous pouvez vous dispenser d’aller sur Liberty Island comme cela.

Einfach klasse, dass man kostenlos direkt an der Freiheitsstatue vorbeifahren kann. Wir sind im Sonnenuntergang rübergefahren und haben Bilder gemacht, die auf Ellis Island mit Sicherheit nicht besser geworden wärem :)

Außerdem ein kleiner Tipp: wenn man auf Staten Island selbst nix zu schaffen hat, kann man, wenn man sich ein bisschen beeilt, die gleiche Fähre schon wieder zurück nehmen. Aber da muss man sich wirklich bisschen sputen!

Die Fähre ist ausreichend um der alten Lady Liberty mal näher zu kommen.

Die Staten Island Ferrys sind der beste Weg an der Freiheitsstatue vorbeizufahren um ein paar Fotos zu schiessen und das auch noch völlig kostenlos. Ich musste noch nicht mal anstehen und konnte direkt vom Terminal auf die Fähre.
Auf der anderen Seite angekommen, muss man nur sehen das man schnell von der Fähre kommt um durch das Terminal (hier ist rennen nicht gestattet und wird von freundlichen Sicherheitskräften überwacht) auf die nächste Fähre zurück nach Manhattan zu kommen. Ansonsten muß man 30 Minuten warten.
Absolut empfehlenswert und deshalb gibt es 5 Sterne von mir

Départ depuis le Terminal de Battery Park, somptueusement rénové. A né rater sous aucun prétexte !

Viele New York Besucher sind der festen Überzeugung, dass man UNBEDINGT zur Freiheitsstatue MUSS. Ich kann Euch nur raten: Lasst es bleiben! Man steht in Stosszeiten 2 – 3 Stunden für die Überfahrt an und dann noch mal ca. 1 Stunde bis man überhaupt an die Statue heran kommt.
Die Aussicht ist langweilig — so groß wie die Statue auf den Fotos aussieht, ist sie nämlich gar nicht.
Wer der Freiheitsstatue nahe kommen will sollte daher einen Fahrt mit der Staten Island Ferry machen.
Ausgangspunkt ist das South Ferry Terminal (Südspitze von Manhattan — Subway-​Station: South Ferry). Von dort aus kann man KOSTENLOS mit der Fähre nach Staten Island fahren.
Beim Einsteigen in der Nähe des Eingangs stehen bleiben.
Man bekommt in den ersten Minuten der Fahrt einen fantastischen Ausblick auf die Skyline von New York, auf die Brooklyn Bridge und nach einigen Minuten Fahrt auf der rechten Seite in Fahrtrichtung auch auf die Freiheitsstatue (sehr nah!).
Die Fahrt dauert ca. 20 Minuten. Dann steigt man aus und fährt mit der nächsten Fähre wieder zurück (ebenfalls kostenlos).

Si viajas a NY, te recomiendo invertir un poco de tiempo en viajar con el Ferry que te lleva a Staten Island. Por un modico precio, no hay que pagar nada, puedes vivir una grata experiencia.
Este Ferry se coge de la Terminal de Whitehall, si no me equivoco, solo tendras que esperar en el peor de los casos una media hora.
Si eres de los que se marea en barco, no te preocupes, ni te vas a enterar que viajas en uno.
En el trayecto que te lleva a Staten Island, te recomiendo que salgas fuera del ferry, aunque haga frio, y te situes en estribor o en la derecha y al volver en la izquierda, ya que asi podras disfrutar de vistas a la estatua de la Libertad y a la isla Ellis.
No te lo pierdas.

In New York mal was umsonst? Nein, eigentlich nicht, aber ich hab doch tatsächlich was entdecken können. Die Staten Island Ferry verbindet die New Yorker Stadtteile Manhattan und Staten Island und ist eigentlich für die Pendler gedacht. Die Fahrt dauert eine halbe Stunde einfach, geht vorbei an der Freiheitsstatue und verschafft einen unglaublich tollen Blick auf die Skyline von Manhattan.
Tipp: Eine halbe Stunde vor Sonnenuntergang losfahren und bei Sonnenuntergang zurück fahren, da kann man die tollsten Fotos machen und hat unbeschreibliche Erinnerungen an diesen Ausblick.
Die Fähre fährt ganz im Süden los, es fährt die Metro 1 direkt hin, Haltestelle South Ferry Station.
