Great place. Fun attitude and really good food. I had the schnitzel and my friend had the käsespätzle. So yummy. Perfect German potato salad and dull salad with mine. And chocolate covered bacon for desert. Of course.

Herwig’s is a really awesome spot in downtown State College! The food is fresh and delicious. The food is definitely filling and doesn’t compare to any other spots around town. They always have something new to eat. The staff is hysterical & it the restaurant has a cozy feel to it. When the weather gets warmer, they slide open all the glass doors in front and you are basically sitting outside.

Always great food. Casual atmosphere. Good hearted banter & insults from the staff are a staple. If you’re uptight & can’t take a little ribbing this place is not for you. There is a Dunkin’ & Starbucks nearby. Bacon cinnamon rolls & hearty dishes ensure you will never leave Herwigs hungry. BYOB during dinner hours. Closed Sunday’s unless there is a PSU home game that Saturday.

Ahh, the food. It’s very authentic, to say the least. My first impression of this place was negative. My friends wanted me to come here because I’ve never been before. The man at the register(owner) was very intimidating. You had to order there before you sat down and when my friends and I had a hard time pronouncing the food he made us try anyway. It made me uncomfortable. I ordered a vegetarian dish. It was average. I wouldn’t mind going back and trying some sausage since that’s what this place is known for. If I do, I will update.

I think i’d go more of a 3.5, but the reason why i didnt round up is cuz the portion size compared to price was a lil below average. I also dont have much Austrian/German cuisine to compare to. However, in terms of pure taste I found it to be good but not something id go home and rave about. Most of the dishes come wit a lil salad and a kind of potato salad. Leberkase($ 12): This is like a bologna sausage. I totally couldnt get what this would taste like from the description on the board so i decided to just take a gamble. Comes wit two fried eggs on top. Not bad but wouldnt get it again. Reminded me of grilled spam in a way. Wiener Schnitzel: I enjoyed this dish more. Reminds me of Japanese katsu which is pretty much the same thing… a breaded fried pork cutlet. The cutlet is a lil more thick than its Japanese cousin and the breading a lil fluffier. I would probably order this again. Bacon Cheesecake($ 6.5): This is a chocolate cheesecake with bacon bits baked into it. Not bad. One thing I do like is the diff variety of entrees and specials they have. I will def be coming back to try their other items as well as the meat platter to see how it all tastes.

Not your typical place. Choose from the menu board, order and then assigned a table by the number on the table. Your meal is then delivered to your table. The wienerschnitzel I had was very good. The potato salad and house salad were very good. The house salad had a dill dressing that is very good. Tasted a few of the items others had and was very pleased. The knodel, a bread dumpling with some spices was good. The sauerkraut was rather blasé. Enjoyed a few bits of roast pork and kassler. BYOB.

I went yesterday to this restaurant. The first impression is that is a messy cuisine. I realized the kitchen is part of the ambiance, but, too messy, disorganized and cluttered. In regards to the food, OMG! DELICIOUS! I had a beets and jerk soup. It was a little bit spicy, but great option for the of yesterday night. My husband got rib eye soaked in something that I never asked soaked in what, but truly amazing flavor, texture, smell. The rib eye comes with a cold potatoes salad-kind of potatoes in pesto– very tasty. The salad was just perfect. I am not very fond of white vinaigrette for the salads, but this one was a home run!!! I gave 3 stars because the place was so messy that I would have never got in, unless my husband recommended it. Despite the messy place it is, the food is just amazing, at least so far what I tasted.

Really, really good food here. The atmosphere is casual, and the owner may hurl insults at you. No worries, though. It’s all in good fun. I went with my family and my in-laws, and between all of us, we were able to sample a whole slew of dishes. The cuisine is all rustic, home-cooked fare. Nothing fancy or elaborate. That being said, it was delicious. We had bratwursts, potato salad, sauerkraut, schnitzel, a special that involved beet cakes, and a delicious concoction with cheese and dumplings(Kaesespaetzle). For dessert, we had the bacon cinnamon roll, which was absolutely delicious. As for the authenticity of the food, I’ll just have to take their word for it. The last time I was in Austria, I was a new college grad backpacking through hostels, subsisting completely on doner kabobs and beer. The décor is fun, and there’s a lot of neat stuff on the walls. I understand that the establishment is BYOB, so prepare accordingly if you want to enjoy a beer with your brat.

This restaurant is delicious! From my experience, there aren’t many yummy restaurants in the State College area, but wow. The service is a little strange, but it’s all worth it once you eat. There are humorous things to read throughout the restaurant, which make waiting for food and in line more fun too. The food was so good. I had vegetarian patties and yum yum yum! The potato salad was also good. Whatever meat dish my husband had was eaten up entirely. This is a place we would surely visit again in the area!!! The place is small and get busy on the weekend, but worth it.
