Expensive and tourist trappy… our guide was extremely inappropriate… I am not fat, but was extremely offended by the Rosie odonnel, Marie osmond, and Kirstie alley fat jokes throughout the tour. He thought he was hilarious and it was very redundant… even my 8 yr old commented on it. The tipping comments/jokes every stop too made me NOT want to tip him… and I didn’t AND he made a crude comment my way on the way out… despicable

This was truly the highlight of our trip. Beautiful, amazing, informative, great guide and just plain fun. The small child loved it and so did we, it is a do not miss experience. It was expensive be prepared to throw down some cash but it was 100% worth every penny. I recommend this to everyone, it was just as I remembered from my childhood maybe even better!

What a fun time! We had a group of 10 that did the Zipline on a recent Sunday morning. There are 4 ziprides that range from 200 to 1250 feet and 3 sky bridges to cross. The scenery is nice when in the woods, but a bit odd when you start off crossing a parking lot… I would recommend making a reservation, the park itself was not busy but the Zipline had a constant stream of people. They also have a discount for large groups.(10+). I was a bit scared at first(not a big fan of heights) but our guides were really great. They made me feel safe and gave me tons of support on each zipride. We never made the cavern tour or rafting but would like to go back and check it out!

There are enough signs on the interstate for this place. I had heard about it since I was a kid but hadn’t ever been. The caves are cool, but it is kind of a tourist trap in a way. It would probably be better maintained as a federal monument. There are quite few caves in Missouri, and I’m guessing that this is one of the larger ones. It is kind of expensive at ~$ 20 for a guided tour, but whatever. You can’t really go off the tour on your own either. If you want to go spelunking you’d better go somewhere else, but that’s not really what this is for anyway. You can see some cool stalactites and stalagmites with out a great deal of effort here. It was supposed to be the hideout of jesse james as well, but there’s not a lot to see as far as that goes. There’s also a place to camp, and you can go rafting or canoeing as well.

Last time I was here was in the 1980’s so things may have changed a bit. I remember a guided tour through a system of underground caverns with large stalagmite typr formations and a story of how Jesse James, Tom Sawyer etc used the caverns to hide from the law. It was like living a part of history and very scary being so far underground. We had a great time & learned alot too. Check out their website. It’s just like I remember a trip back to my childhood.

Onwards and upwards. Stanton, Missouri. Along your drive, you’re going to see a crapload of billboards advertising various caverns in the area. there’s cavern tours, rafting through rivers, and all the touristy goodness that summertime can provide. i had no intention of going to any of these places. then the advertising apparently hit me like a ton of bricks and i was off to meramac caverns. why there? jesse james hid out from The Man there. and i think outlaws are cool. wait– before i get random comments– i think ol’ west outlaws are cool. moving on– the meramac caverns are within the lajolla park. the park is a bit off main road down a road that dead ends right into the cavern area. there’s camping all along the river, including tent camping and rv camping. there’s a big ol’ parking lot by the caverns themselves, and of course, a large souvenir shop where you buy your tickets to go into the caverns. not too shabby on pricing, but because i was standing my grounds on the budget, you might want to opt for what i did. check out the gift shop, check out the ol timey neighborhood they set up, check out the river because it’s beautiful. and while you’re checking out the gift shop, you can actually peak into the caverns without going way underground in the cold, damp and expensive tourist rabbit hole. that was enough for me. and that experience is free. and you can actually see quite a bit. jesse james? good for you. fight The Man. in the meantime, i’m on the road again.
