Built between 1885 and 1888, the Bancroft Rock House is named for Hubert Howe Bancroft, a wealthy writer, editor and publisher of history books. The rock house was used as a school house, a guest house, and a fire-safe storage building for part of Bancroft’s extensive transcripts and book collection. The Bancroft Rock House is currently listed as a County of San Diego Historic Landmark. If you’re interested in local history as I am you should check this place out. It is right around the corner from the Bancroft Ranch house. You can learn all kinds of interesting things about the area before it was developed.
