Major Michael Donnelly Land Preserve is a peaceful and relaxing retreat in an otherwise busy part of town. The Land Preserve is on over 115 acres of wetland and woodland between Sullivan Avenue and West Road in South Windsor. There is one main walking trail that is a total length of 2 miles. From the parking area, the trail winds down to a picturesque pond, there’s even a gazebo! Bog bridges are scattered about to help you cross the stream and wetland areas. It can get pretty messy so wear shoes you don’t particularly mind getting dirty. The trail then continues into a hardwood forest before bringing you back across marshlands. There are several viewing stations strewn throughout, perfect to catch your breath and soak in the view. The land preserve is teeming with birds and wildlife. Oftentimes I’ll see some sort of creature while strolling though the very easy, mostly level terrain. Quiet and secluded, this is an ideal dog-walking area too. No restrooms however. Some areas are wheel chair accessible, but shoot for drier conditions if you’re looking for a less stressful day. There is a bike rack at both ends of the trail too.
