My girlfriend and I visited South Padre recently and we went here for one of our lunches. Walking inside, the atmosphere seemed a bit dull, but we were pleasantly surprised by the food. She had a chicken breast dish and I had their fried shrimp. The portions were generous and pretty high quality for the price. Service was friendly. Again, not the most glamorous place on the inside, but if you want seafood without having to pay a quarter of a c-note for a dish, this is one place you might consider visiting.

Jake’s is open again although as I am writing this, the Unilocal page says they are closed. Same atmosphere… they still have Wi-Fi. This time I tried the Roasted Chicken Wings & Tampiquena plate. The wings were good… but give them time, it takes a while to get them. Also, there is no sauce on the roasted version, so if you want some sauce, ask for it on the side. The Tampiquena plate included a small cut of marinated beef, two enchiladas and rice & beans. It was all pretty good. Their happy hour lasts until 7 and offers $ 2.50 well drinks. I think they are now owned by the same owner as Marchand White Sands. Some of the menu items carry that name. A cute kid was running around… I think her dad was at the bar. They had Dora the Explorer and Bubble Guppies on the TV with the sound on… it was distracting. But this kid was super cute… Kid: Excuse me sir… may I hide under your table? Me: Uh, yeah, I guess? Kid:(mom comes out of the bathroom) SUPRISE! Me: WTF? Kid: Excuse me sir… where is your dad. Me: What? Oh… Um… I’m in my 30s… My dad didn’t come with me to the restaurant. Kid: Oh… Ok… bye! Kid: Excuse me sir… what are you eating. Me: Pollo. Dad:(from Bar) Leave the man alone already! Me: It’s ok. Kid: I have chicken and french fries. Me: Do you need ketchup or something. Kid: Yes please. Me: You probably have to ask the server. Kid: Ok… but I don’t like ketchup. Me: WTF? Thanks Jake’s… The food was good. I got caught up on email… all the while with some 5 year old funny entertainment.
