Food and ambience is good. We were seated without a reservation. We had the Mixed Grills and Prawn Enchiladas. Both were really good. They serve free chips and salsa. Margaritas were okay, nothing special.

Food is wonderful. I would give it 5 stars except for the fact that the noise levels were ridiculously high. The place wasn’t even full but I had to yell across the table to speak to my husband. The waitress acknowledged that it gets loud. Service was very very good. Top shelf margaritas were great. Come for happy hour. Fish tacos A+, my husband is still raving over his dish(can’t remember the name) Yucatan carnitas. I’d come back but it’s not a place to have conversation.

We’ve been trying local restaurants in Sonoma once a week. The place looked enticing, the menu and décor screamed good food, yet the chicken lime tortilla soup was sparse on chicken, and the buro was just average. Overall, I thought the food was pretty basic, nothing very exciting and something I would say based on the choices on the plaza, Maya would be close to last on my list. This is not a restaurant we will visit again.

Excellent mole enchiladas and fish tacos. Variety of margaritas rocks too as do the excellent and flavorful carnitas. Went with two families and a bunch of kids after a day at a local family oriented winery and some fun at Sonoma square park.

I give this place a three-star rating because of the really nicely decorated interior and the service. But the food is very below average. When I went I ordered the«really good nachos» and let me tell you it was definitely not really good nachos. The cheese and the various toppings on the nachos just did not mix well together. The beans were also a little sweet which didn’t work well with the Mexican food. Then we decided to order the wet enchilada vegetarian style. We had seen so many pictures on Unilocal and decided to go with it since it looked good. But I would highly recommend not ordering this. The inside come with squash asparagus zucchini and other random vegetables that I don’t think belong in Mexican food. Again the beans were sweet, and just did not complement it at all. I think we ate two bites and told the waiter to take it back. The waiter was so sweet though – the service I’ve got to say at this place is great and he immediately took it off the bill and asked if there was anything he could do. And the truth was there was really nothing he could do the ingredients just weren’t good. I would recommend this place if you are just going for drinks since the vibe inside is fun and vibrant. I don’t think this place was too vegetarian friendly and I wouldn’t go back for the food.

After much thought, I decided to try Maya. First off, I ordered a margarita made with fresh lime and not a mix, yum! Then, the waiter brought me out some fresh-made chips with two types of salsa, very nice. When my order came, which was a chile relleno with mashed white beans and rice, oh how lovely this tasted. So much so, that I ordered another margarita to go with! Beautiful atmosphere, great service, and my bill came to well under $ 40.00, so I tipped accordingly. The waiter explained that the recipes at this place are from the Yucatán with a Caribbean influence, which is unlike the surplus of Mexican restaurants in the Sonoma area, so expect something different in terms of flavor, not to mention quality. Maya is elegant and delicious! I will bring my friends next time.

Maya is a nicely decorated, clean and well-run, restaurant that offers surprisingly delicious upscale Mexican food.
I loved the fish. The sea bass was beautifully prepared and came in a yummy, slightly spicy sauce. I was expecting a typical Mexican restaurant, but was very surprised to find it was much more upscale. My only complaint is that I when I was in Sonoma for the film festival(a Saturday at 8pm), the restaurant was closed. Maybe 40 people(tourists) were looking in the windows. As a restaurant owner, I can’t imagine turning away that much business. They should definitely keep later hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Okay, if short hours are my only complaint, you know the restaurant is good. Lots of good restaurants in Sonoma. Maya is one of them.

The atmosphere is good for groups or casual dates. The food is just average. And the open windows make the restaurant a bit cold.

Excellent happy hour 4−6pm. Delicious margaritas(on par with some ice had in Mexico) and the Panucho is definitely a tasty morsel. Thought the portions would be small given the price but they didn’t disappoint!

YUM! We stopped here for dinner on a Saturday evening. The service was fantastic. We had eaten several overpriced, underwhelming meals during our time here in Sonoma; this meal was such a welcomed change of pace. The Maya top shelf margarita was great and the carnita burrito I had was so yummy.

I was a little disappointed in this restaurant. First the menu selection is minimal. I settled for chicken mole enchiladas. The enchiladas were good the chicken was moist and mole was good. The beans and rice were not good at all. Beans were mashed navy beans and the rice appeared to be instant like you get out of a box. Very disappointing. I can’t believe that a bunch of staples can fetch hefty prices in upswing of $ 20. I had a margarita that was $ 9.00. One of the smallest margarita I’ve ever had. So small that it was served in a martini glass, it was good. Service was mediocre. The server was nice, he took our order and brought our food. Nothing above. No tip for him(I don’t tip for what the employer pays him for) The little girl that brought our water and refilled gave us better service. This is not a restaurant I would recommend.

We dined here On Presidents’ Day and it was a very good experience. Good food, great service and nice ambience. Would recommend the Maya spaghetti– it’s definitely a must-have. Kids had a good selection of food too.

Service– excellent Ambiance– great and warm and comfortable Food– really good. I had this mixed meat plate that came with some roasted veggies. OMG, everything was very fresh and really good. The refried beans were a bit different. They were good and flavorful but a bit on the salty side. and they were quite light in color, so I thought that meant there may have been A LOT of lard in them. I’m not too sure, but I didn’t finish them. One sis had the steak salad. there were a lot of her favorite things on there and she said it was fresh, delicious, and would order it again. The other sis had a chicken burro. Said it was good but the enchilada sauce tasted a bit canned. Next time I think she would order it with the green sauce. We also shared the empanada appetizer. They were fried dumpling type things, if I remember correctly, and we all said we should have had 2 of those for the table with side salads. that would have been enough. The filling was black beans and cheese. and the sauces on the outside were wonderful. Each emp was cut in half(6 halves total) and each section had a different salsa on it. It was wonderful. and FRESH! This is a very comfortable restaurant with great salsas, unlimited chips, and EXTREMELYFRESHVEGGIESANDMEATS… ++++ 3 thumbs up!!!

After finishing the meal I had to submit a review. We had the fish tacos, ceviche and house salad. All the dishes were mediocre to bad. The fish Tacos made with cod was just prepared poorly. The fish was mushy and gammie w no real consistency. The black beans were bland. The salad was tasteless and the ceviche lacked flavor. It s an experience where you feel like the prices were already overpriced, but you got ripped off because of the poor quality. Although service was fine. With many restaurants to choose from in the Square, skip this one.

Really good margaritas. Chips and salsa appetizer has red and tomatillo offerings. Both delicious. We had the Real Good Nachos with chicken. The namesake did not disappoint. Really cool atmosphere and a nice bar area.

This is the first restaurant we noticed, and decided to walk in and try it(without even checking the Unilocal reviews in advance… oh my!) It was a tad pricey, but our waiter was efficient and friendly, and the food tasted great. I opted for chicken tortilla soup(full of flavorful chicken, lime, rice, and avocado); my husband and mom opted for carnitas. The carnita meat was delicious, tortillas tasted homemade, and beans were good, also. In addition, the chips and salsas had a nice flavor. We were pleased!

Definitely a great Mexican place to try on the Sonoma Square … Good salsas and thin, crispy fresh chips. Delicious shredded chicken nachos and outstanding, amazing tortilla soup. They serve Casa Noble tequila so that’s a plus for us(we love that stuff)! Great enchiladas! Nice atmosphere and super service! Recommended for sure!

This place is great! We went here to celebrate my cousins anniversary, they recommended we come check out their favorite place. Once we got our food I understood why… Everything was amazing form the chips and salsa at the moment we sat down, to the enchiladas and huge steak burrito we got to share! Everything had so much wonderful flavor and you could taste the care and attention to detail that was put into each dish, especially the steak. The service was pretty good. Though when we got out ticket tip was already included on the ticket… Even though ½ of the party was under the age of 4, when asked about this charge, the server said that any party of 6+ tip is supposed to be included. For me, I didn’t mind paying that, but is was frustrating that they just added it.

So I really like Maya, its a medium sized space, with great décor in a killer location. Great Southern Mexican cuisine and drinks and good service. I had their grande burro, which is basically a wet burrito. Great taste and portion size, affordable price. I had it with grilled steak and I was happy the steak came out medium rare, which I asked for. One thing I really enjoy about Maya is their hand carved wooden chairs which are these huge chunks of wood carved to the contours of your behind which I appreciated. Their homemade chips and salsa are incredible, some of the best I’ve had. This is a great spot in a sweet location and if you’re in old-town Sonoma stop by for lunch, you won’t be disappointed.

Delicious food, amazing drinks, and an excellent location. If we lived in Sonoma, we’d be eating there all the time :) Pros: –Even though the place was packed, our server was attentive and patient. –LOVED the drinks. They had some unique ones I hadn’t tried before, and needless to say I was impressed :) –Small size options. For example, I could order just one enchilada, it was an option on the menu. That way I didn’t have leftovers like I normally do when we go out. Less wasteful that way! –Right in Sonoma Square, so after eating easy to walk to bars and such if you don’t want the night to end. Cons: –Loud and packed. –Chairs were not very comfortable. –Not really any great parking nearby. Or at least that we could find. If you’re in the area, try it out if you feel like some good Mexican food!
