I booked a helicopter and dogsled tour through Alaska Icefield Expeditions, Inc. The confirmation paperwork stated that you should call the morning you arrive in port to confirm that the tour is still happening. Despite the fact that the Verizon map showed service in Skagway, it was spotty at best and I was unable to get through. Nonetheless, we made the short walk to their headquarters(the directions I received on how to find Temsco Helicopters from our cruise ship were clear and concise) only to learn that weather would prohibit us from visiting the dog sledding camp(they also tried to contact me, and once I reached an area with service I received the voicemail indicating that they had canceled). They offered us another tour at a cheaper rate than the dog sledding trip, which we took(although many tears were shed by my daughter who desperately wanted to see the dogs). We had a safety overview, then were promptly loaded into a helicopter. Our pilots were friendly and knowledgeable and I was confident in their abilities. The tour guides on the glacier were also hospitable and overall it was an experience of a lifetime. I also received the refund for the dog sledding before I even arrived home. In light of the recent sea plane accident in Ketchikan, I am grateful to both companies for putting their guests safety first and canceling our trip.

This is something that anyone and everyone who takes a cruise to Alaska should find the time to do. The helicopter ride and glacier dog sled camp was without a doubt the highlight of my most recent trip to Alaska. Taking the helicopter up towards the snowcapped mountains was something so ridiculously awesome. On top that, the chopper dropped us off at a dog sled camp that was on top of a glacier! We were then shown to our dog sled team where we met and pet the dogs that would be pulling us around the camp. Our team leader was so informative while she introduced us to her team, and all of her dogs were so full of energy and sweet. Once the sled team was hooked up, we were off! I was with two other people in my group and we each took turns sitting in the very front of the sled, sitting in the chair bend the first person, or standing in the very rear controlling the second brake. All positions were equally fun and it really gives you a good idea of what the entire team has to go through in order for them to make their way through all the races that they participate in. In fact, our lead sled dog Yoda has participated in the Iditarod race before. Super cool! The sled stopped at various places around the camp so we could take pictures and pet the dogs if we wanted to. I was able to take some insane pictures because after all, we were on top of a glacier. Words and pictures simply cannot express the feeling one has while at Alaska Icefield Expeditions. You to take my word for it and splurge a little. It’s definitely worth it.
