damn right, watched that episode of bar rescue, we all make mistakes but the goal is not to make the same mistake twice. if john tapher ever came to my bar and made it look nice and if i knew it would work i would deal with it and suck it up like an adult. she deserves to live in her parents basement for going back to the old ass ugly as hell ways. i would never go to that bar. not trying to be mean but really she needs to realize who the hell would own a pirate based bar? not one person. she had her chance but hey she blew it big time. i bet she still feels pretty dumb for the mistake she made. no one likes pirates in a bar. if people dont like it sweetheart please give us what we want instead of what you want! sometimes as adults we have to go out of our confort zone and do things we dont like so goodluck with all that

I think it is disgraceful what these people did to John Taffer. I hope they go out of business soon. The food is disgusting and they all look like old hags!

I see why this placed closed… Wish they took Jon’s advice as it was a beautiful bar for PROFESSIONALS in the downtown area. The pirate theme is very tacky… Insanity at its finest.

Owners are not good business people. Pirates? Should have stayed with Corporate. Why she went back to pirates was crazy!

I don’t understand shear stupidity. Jon Taffer did an amazing job on this place and I could see the revenue would start flowing in. Now the idiot owner is a million in debt and the place is permanently closed! What is wrong with her? Play pirates on your own time lady. But grow the hell up when it comes to business. You are absolutely one of the dumbest people I have ever seen! Where did it take you? To the poor house!

Well, it’s closed, but not totally. No Longer the Pirate Tavern, but occupies the same space. The food is not quite as good, in my opinion, but i didn’t come for the food. It was experience, a place, a gathering of twisted souls, a true speakeasy with no pretense and(precious little service)… It took a few trips to become accepted. But once i was, i spoke with literal rocket scientists, pharmaceutical kineticists, soil scientists, foreign emirates, and a lot of people that never really gave up LARP. Despite that i wasn’t a parrot-on-the-shoulder«drivenmenuts» patron, i will miss the place. The new place doesn’t even have Loose Cannon beer on tap. If tourists got a cold reception, just try and keep in mind this wasn’t for you. On the other hand, a nifty haunt was spoiled by a terrible business model and poor service. I was saddened at closure but not in the least bit surprised. And 500 singing piratz in full regalia at days end meant nothing… where were you any other day off the week? Places i like close. Quite ostensibly i am the common denominator. RIP, scurvy dogs, I’ll grog with ye at DJ’s locker soon enough…

Unprofessional and this place isn’t the greatest. Found hair in my food and waiter would not stop talking about their own problems. Do not recommend as a bar or restaurant.

How silly. Grew up in Silver Spring and used to work at what used to be the Three Aces. Great food and great people. This place is like a carnival ride with rude people. At least at Dick’s Last Resort you expect it. To have people working that obviously don’t like what the do came through loud and clear.

My husband and I came here for dinner before a concert at the Fillmore. I had seen it on bar rescue, and was very excited to try it out. I was halfway through my second vodka-coffee drink when I swirled my straw around in the glass, then pulled out a big HAIRBALL. Not just a hair, which is gross enough, a wad of hair with blue lint stuck in it. I about puked. They comped the one drink(after offering to give me a free fresh drink – no thanks!). It ruined coffee-flavored cocktails for me ever since. We were out on the patio, and the owner’s husband was walking in and out of the gate working on his boat that was parked out back. Really? I still can’t listen to the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song without feeling a bit woozy.

Went on Friday before they closed. Like everyone else saw on bar rescue and wanted to go before they closed . Really tried to give them a fair chance. Even at 9 it was crazy busy. Waited twenty minutes for a drink. They were out of cups and glasses so we could only get a bottled beer. Everyone was rude and loud. Bathrooms were overflowing. Full of pirate people. I think the concept could work but not with the type of people this bar attracts.

The place is novel and I enjoyed it. My friend and I will definetely be going back for the closing party. The waiters stay on character and drinking grog is novel and reminds me of monkey island. Didnt try the food and everyone was friendly. I do wish though I dressed up… but my complying days are behind me.

I really enjoyed the food here. The Pirate theme is extremely entertaining. The patio is very nice during the warmer months!

It is all about expectations. I knew Piratz had been on Bar Rescue(cause what Silver Springer doesn’t?) and my expectations were pretty low as a result(and the mediocre reviews on Unilocal). Came in about 7 on Friday night and went straight back to the bar at the far of the Tavern. The front of the house was well lit and looked nice, but we were meeting friends at the bar. I got a rum and coke to start my evening and it was definitely more rum than coke and wasn’t watered down to death(nice work!). We grabbed a seat at the table with friends on what might possibly be the MOST uncomfortable stool I have ever sat on. All of the drinks I had were poured with a relatively heavy hand, so I felt I good value. I also ordered the stew on the menu. It was okay, not much meat, but prevented me from overdoing it on drinks. Friday evenings apparently they have a live Pirate Band(Pirates for Sail). They were fun and had some awesome songs. I truly enjoyed it.

I came here with friends on a Thursday night and we shared a couple pitchers of grog. We had already eaten dinner at a nearby Thai place so we did not try any of the food. We were seated in the back patio area — a really nice place to be in the late summer. The grog was strong, but you get used to the taste. Our server did not break character the entire time, which cracked me up. I might take visitors here if only for the unique ambiance.

Man oh Man… the Piratz Tavern… first of all I have been here both before and after the bar rescue show. The only difference is after bar rescue(after they undid what bar rescue did), it was a lot nicer and brighter. I get they want to keep this bar authentic, and the staff are really in character, but sometimes it’s a bit much. I’ve definitely ordered food here, and they were simply«out of silverware». Excuse me!!! I’m assuming this isn’t a rude pirate thing and there’s a back up in the kitchen, but still NOSILVERWARE??? The grog… ug… it tastes like heartburn. Whatever ginger extract they put in it is intense and not good. The food is whatever, they get an E for effort for the food. Definitely go and check it out, it’s a great place for a birthday or to bring out of towners to. But i would just head there for a beer AFTER dinner somewhere else. I would put in on your bucket list. FYI they’re all dressed like pirates.

I stopped by this place because I was curious to see what it was about. I had heard about it because of Bar Rescue. I’ve been two times and both experiences weren’t that great. The first visit I was in the area and decided to stop by. I entered and was not greeted by anyone. I decided to walk towards the back towards the bar. I got to the bar and was not greeted by anyone. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to drink and a bartender was not there to inform me of their signature drinks so after five minutes I decided to leave. As we were walking the owner decided to greet but by that point it was too late. The second visit we decided to stop by for beer. We sat outside in the patio area. The waiter did not bring out my ginger ale until I had to remind him the second time. It was difficult to order more rounds of beer because the waiter was not attentive. At the end the waiter gave us our beer and told us to hurry up and chug our beer because they were closing. How rude! What they should do instead is have last call! DUHHH if they would do last call 45 mins before closing time that way people will leave after they finish their last drink.

How weird do you like it? A waiter named Longshot, a strange-smelling interior in the shotgun-style, nautical themed building, a few dudes at the bar who looked like years of working the soundboard had taken its toll… All made for a trepidatious entrance. Nevertheless, everything was great. The grog by the mug(described as three types of rum, ginger, and ice), the cabana out back, the shockingly affordable happy hour, and the incredibly expansive HH food menu all made for an excellent escape from condo’d Silver Spring. Get a grog, pull up a chair for Longshot, and soak up the strange.

Grog Ice Cream $ 4(4⁄5 NOMs) Black beard would be proud! Time for some nomnom desserts at Silver Spring pirate theme bar. This place is not exactly known for their food, but maybe now it should be known for their desserts. Looks just like any boring ice cream, but don’t let that fool you. First spoon in and you will be amazed by the sweet grog flavor. Its a grog flavor explosion, with everything that is great about this alcoholic drink, but in the sweet soft ice cream form. Its like making some great, even greater. Anything in dessert form is always better. If you happen to be raided by some pirates, make sure to order this. Rum Balls $ 4(3⁄5 NOMs) Who doesn’t like some balls in their mouth, especially when they are spiked with some rum. Oh and there is a lot of rum, tasted like a whole shot is in there. Easy to get drunk and fat off these ones. We will never get tired saying BALLLLLS! Yes, we are 12 like that. Very thick and rich chocolate goodies. They are so good, its hard not to just put the whole thing in. What really made us sad is the quantity to price ration, for $ 4 you only get two balls. That is how nature intended it for all of us, but we would like more. Not sure if we would get this again since you get so little, but still was a very enjoyable dessert. Great Grilled Cheese $ 9(3⁄5 NOMs) Walk the cheese plank maty! Exploring the food selection at one of Silver Spring most amazing pirate themed bars. Pirates go all in when it comes to everything and that includes their grilled cheese sandwiches. One cheese is just not enough for them so they add five; heddar, provolone, swiss, manchego and smoked gouda. The waiter will try and will succeeded at upgrading you with some bacon. Hey, you can’t resist the draw of bacon, so just accept it. Unlike the name, this wasn’t so great, more of just regular grilled cheese. It just didn’t have that cheesy flavor. With so many cheese you come to expect, well more cheese. Flavor and quantities were just not there. Bacon did make it better, so it was a good addition. Served with some very sad flavor fries. Overall its one of their better dishes and next time we are likely to order it, though could be because good food selection is limited. Its all about drinking here. Bacon Deviled Eggs(1⁄5 NOMs) Not the hidden treasure you looking for. Big fan of deviled eggs, love eating them and love making them. They looks like deviled eggs, but didn’t really taste like them. It was very bland, so bland that it was surprising how bland it was. Even bacon that always makes everything better, seem to be no help. Looks like there is someOld Bay seasoning, but didn’t taste any, maybe add lots more of it? Made me one sad nomster. Piri Piri Chicken $ 5(3⁄5 NOMs) Arrrggggg chicken matey! Didn’t know this tavern near down town Silver Spring has food and not just drinks. Little dish with a nice kick to it. There is a whole lot of spicy sauce, you can smell it a mile away. Not sure if thats a good thing. Kind of tasted like they added a whole lot of Tabasco sauce and maybe too much. Might be a bit too overpowering so that is the only thing you taste. Not a bad way to start your noming adventure with some pirates.

You’re either going to love this bar or hate this bar. This is a niche bar(read: pirates fans). It was featured on Bar Rescue, converted into a corporate bar, and converted back into a pirate-themed bar the following day. I was here for Valentine’s Day. I gotta say that we were pleased with the bison burgers we had. If you’ve never tried them, they taste like regular hamburgers, except a little juicier. I would highly recommend them. I would also highly recommend the belly dancer here. She was amazing. Need I say more? I happen to love the pirate theme and the service here. You might not, but I would definitely check this dive out.

Grog? Check. Dim-lit corners? Check. Wait staff with a sense of humor? Check. An outdoor patio? Chizeeeck! This place is way better than I expected. Granted, I dropped by on a weeknight and consumed only a beverage. However, in our brief time spent here we had a great time. There was literally no one around other than the waitress when we walked in. The front bar looked abandoned and there were no patrons in sight. Luckily, the waitress greeted us with spirit, humor and wits and made sure to lead us to the back where we found a clean, polished and dimly lit back area with just a few low key folks hanging out. A friend and I dropped by here just to continue our conversation that we had started over at Quarry House, so the quiet back room was perfectly peaceful and great for carrying on a conversation. Yes, you have to make your own fun, but hopefully you’re in good company. Overall, I was so pleasantly surprised by my experience here. After hearing about Piratz for years, I think I was ready for the worst. I expected it to be dingy, run-down, obnoxious and corny but I found it to be none of the above. Guess you’ve just gotta give it a shot and be ready for anything. Grog is on deck for my next visit!
