As a point of awareness last year around Earth Day, I decided to look up what my carbon footprint was. It turns out that I pollute 11.9 tons of CO2 per year(you’d be shocked that the average American pollutes 23 tons). i came across as one of the leading providers of carbon offset credits for individuals and businesses. for those of you that aren’t familiar with this process, essentially you donate money to this non-profit, and they, in turn, use that money to invest in either efficient energy, re-forestation, and/or renewable energy projects. You might remember that Coldplay bought 10,000 mango trees for villagers in India… these same trees would absorb the same amount of CO2 that their album ‘Rush of Blood to the Head’ would’ve dumped in the atmosphere through its production. if you’ve seen Inconvenient Truth, you know CO2 leads to climate warming. anyway, for $ 99, i became carbon neutral for the year(you get a certificate, and its also tax deductible). in fact, i’m actually under neutrality, if there’s such a thing. whats importhant though is that i became more aware of how much energy i was using in the house, how far i drove, and how much i flew.(flying the equivalent of 3 roundtrips from LAX-NYC was my biggest polluter). you also have the option on which projects you want them to donate to. you can also purchase carbon credits on a case by case basis… if that works out cheaper for you. you can offset your weddings, your business, or even an event. this is not to say that you can feel better about gunning your SUV or flipping on all your light switches, but you’d still be carbon neutral if you’ve calculated it.
