Fork tender mesquite smoked brisket was awesome. The Cajun rice was delicious and spicy

OK folks, this is going to be your Barbeque stop if your ever in the East Texas woods!!! West Texas Barbeque is located on what is called the Highway 96 bypass around Silsbee, Texas! I was introduced to this little place back in 1994 when I moved to the East Texas area. It is a family run place and Alma, her mother, and her sister, and occasionally others help out here! The Barbeque is done in old fashioned open pits in a little screened in building beside the restaurant. The brisket is smoked around 14 – 16 hours and is some of the best you ever lay on your lips!!! I’m not kidding! The brisket is always most and not dry. It makes for one of the best sliced beef sandwiches you’ll ever eat. Also the chopped beef is great!!! I can also tell you a side of their potato salad sets it off just right. They make their own sauce which is really great too! Their sausage is good, as is their pork ribs. Don’t want a sandwich, no problem order a plate lunch with one, two, or three meats and sides! Dessert? Try one of the pies Alma makes herself daily! Pecan, chocolate, coconut and others! They are the best!!! Need desserts for the Holidays? Call ahead and place your order!!! Alma starts cooking pies to supply to people for their Holiday dinners every year!!! They are just too good! So if your ever in the Silsbee area, drop in to West Texas Barbeque for some of Texas’ best!!! Although they haven’t shown up on the Texas Monthly top fifty, they should have about ten years ago!!! I’d put them up against most any Q joint in the state!!! When I’m in the area, I’ll always stop in to grab a sandwich and always take some home to the wife of she’s not with me! This ain’t no brag, just fact!!!

Not the worst BBQ I ever had(particularly by southeast Texas standards), but certainly not anything to go out of your way for. $ 12 for a one-meat plate with two sides(drink not included) is a bit much for lunch, and definitely too high a price for this caliber of BBQ. The brisket had a good texture and an adequate smoke ring, but tasted as if it had been oven-finished. Pinto beans shouldn’t be served with sausage commingled – at least not in Texas. The potato salad was the usual gallon-tub grocery store stuff. They do regain points for the desserts, though. Some beautiful meringue pies were up on the counter. If I’m hungry next time I drive by, I might stop, but this place is nothing special.

The worst food I have eaten in this area. The kitchen is visable from the dining area. Dirty dishes were piled high on every surface. In addition to the stacks of dirty pots and pans the kitchen is generally just unclean. Along the wall is a bank of five microwaves. All food is cooked well in advance and microwaved«fresh» to order. My meat was so dry it crumbled when stuck with a fork. My rice was cooked at least a day in advance. There was nothing I found remotly appealing to this place.

Brisket is tender and smokey here. The sauce is not sweet, more vinegary but not too vinegary. It was a good complement to the brisket. Pintos were spicy, baked beans were sweet, tasted very close to canned. Cole slaw was good, flavored were balanced not too sweet not too tart. Cajun rice is really meaty and somewhat spicy, I could have made a meal out of that. I got some lemon pie to cut the spice. Ribs were good too. Worth the trip from Beaumont, but next time I will skip the sides and get a couple pounds of brisket and some sauce.

Me and my wife are big BBQ eaters. We also travel quite a bit so we get to try different BBQ. This place has been in business a while so the know how to run a business. The BBQ is average. Sorry but this place wont be in the Texas Monthly Top 50 without some work. We eat here about 3 times a year.

Every time I go back to visit my parents it includes a detour to West Texas BBQ. I typically get a kids portion because it is more than enough to feel me up. It has a very nice ambiance, the cooker is next door so you can smell it coming up. I like the sandwiches and potato salad the most. Their pies are also very good and reasonably priced.

After growing up in Silsbee, I’d heard nothing but high praise for West Texas BBQ. Oddly, I’d never visited until this month. It was awful. Seriously bad BBQ. The baked beans tasted like plain canned Vandekamps. The meat was dry and flavorless. The sauce tasted canned. I was seriously disappointed in everything we tried there.

I lived in Silsbee in 1990. This place is legend and worth checking out. The peaks on their pies are crazy. God I used to love eating at this place… I miss it still.
