This restaurant is a DEFINITE go back to it! It is out of the way from Bridgewater, but friends from Frenchtown took us there. LOVEDIT! I never did get our server’s name, but boy, was he a cute Rutgers student. Absolutely adorable, and a very pleasant guy… Appetizers were GREAT. Prosciutto plate got 5 stars, the Asian calamari was almost as good. The wontons were very good, but the HIT was the Crab Gratin. EVERYONE at the table loved it, and there was plenty to take home. Needed more garlic toast with it though. The menu was very varied, with very different entrée options. Lots of Game entrees, and several Veggie entrees, but only a few ‘normal’ entrees for folks not interested in experimenting. Elk rib eye was good, if a bit too lean. The meat was very tender, but a little too much sinew, made it difficult to cut The Filet was good, but have had better. The Buffalo hanger steak was a real hit… And the S’mores PIZZA was a big hit with the table. Thank you and we will be back. The 4 stars was because of lack of ‘normal’ options but non-adventurous diners. If I could give fractions, it would have been a 4.5]vc.

This place is lovely to look at. Just keep repeating that as you eat over priced, uninspired cuisine. The chef/owner is apparently doing a Robert DeNiro. Phoning it in to a well heeled but not very demanding clientele.

After trying to make a reservation for a few weeks with no luck, we decided to try mid week– success. Unfortunately our good luck stopped there. After being seated we were immediately given water– the service seemed to stop there. It took forever to take our drink order, receive our drinks and have our dinner order taken. This in a dining room with 5 tables, only 2 others were occupied. My scallops were good although arrived in a lemon butter(broth?) which seeped into the herbed risotto and veggies(which were both very good). My husband’s steak which he ordered rare came out more gray than the skies in Portland on a cloudy day. He should have sent it back but was starving by this time so ate it anyway. While we were dining another table became occupied. This table and another both had the wrong meals served. We really wanted to love the newly renovated inn but unfortunately can’t. The inn itself is a spectacular old building and the post fire renovations are beautiful.

My first and probably only visit. We had tomato bisque and Asian calamari which were both good. My gf ordered clams and got mussels instead. I ordered fish and chips and got uncooked batter with a smear of fish and the chips(French fries) are frozen!!! I sent back my fish & chips & got chicken parmigiana with linguine instead. That came with angel hair pasta; apparently the kitchen had run out of linguine. The dish wasn’t bad and it was a nice portion. The server didn’t even offer us the dessert menu. He said that he didn’t think we wanted anything else since things had been so bad already. We won’t be going back.

We will try it again with friends because it is quite, lovely, quiet, and a friendly staff. Today, for a late lunch, my husband ordered meatloaf. I don’t order that out. I tasted it. It was delicious; the side Vegetables were very tasty and fresh. I ordered tuna on rye. The rye was stale, fell apart. The tuna was dry. Our app, of fried mushrooms with a garlic dipping sauce, was oddly cold and very watery inside the tasty breading. Our server took them off our bill. We ate in the tavern. Most of the customers were seniors, which made for a quieter atmosphere. Very pleasant. I’m a senior and talking over tv, music and a loud bar is not our choice. We will be back with friends and try again.

Judge for yourself. I ordered Kobe Steak. The hanger steak was cooked(why then calling it «steak») and it was cold. The waiter hold the plate and said«yeh you are right, usually the plate is hot,» Took the dish and came back after a couple of minutes. The plate was not cold this time but I am not eating the ceramic or whatever the plate is made of! Right! The food: the same dish, cooked meat(same as before) and… cold! I guess the food was not microwaved enough time, or just the plate was microwaved. Don’t know. Tasteless. $ 32. My partner’s dish: Jambalaya. Mediocre, kind of ready made last minute warmed up overly spiced and oily. $ 26. We won’t go back.

Not only is it open but it is thriving. The road and parking lots were full last night. We ate in the bar room which was packed. We quickly got a seat. The soup was Manhattan clam chowder it was delicious. My main course was scallops with risotto and vegetables which is my favorite meal there and it did not disappoint. Dessert was was flourless chocolate cake which was yummy. The wait staff was warm and friendly including Dillion who makes it fun. Happy to be back. J&J

The restaurant was lovingly restored to its glory. Glad to see the atmosphere of this historic icon was preserved to showcase it’s heritage of the small town. Sat in the bar area and enjoyed the wooden beams, large windows and service. Clam appetizer is delicious followed by the short ribs. Excellent spice and tenderness. Drinks are always on par and the wine is plentiful. Large menu so there are many choices for those wanting to experience a bit different fare. Service is always half the equation for a pleasant dining experience. Tom, the manager, is a wonderful addition to this establishment. I queried him about the building restoration and he proudly gave us a tour, explaining some interesting history. He then made sure we were situated at a table we enjoyed, as well as frequented us throughout our meal to ensure our satisfaction. This 5 star rating is because of Tom. Thank you Tom for making our first trip back to the restored restaurant a great one, we will definitely be back when you’re working!

I have frequented the Inn many times over the years. However, I’m disappointed that since it has reopened it is losing it’s former relaxed charm. The prices have gone up and the drink sizes have gone down. If you don’t want to lose your local customer base, I sincerely hope you will rethink your portion policy and get back in touch with your loyal customer base — or else you will become just another one of the many touristy restaurants in the area. I say this because the atmosphere of the original Sergeantsville Inn was so authentic and charming. Now it feels too pretentious. This is not helped by the uptight attitude of the new floor manager.

Terrible customer service. Made a reservation a week before I needed them for my parents 40th anniversary. Showed up after driving in an ice storm to find that there was no reservation. Totally unacceptable, the girl that had answered the phone, the several times that I called since they hung up on me three times, was clearly not very focused or competent in doing her job. Won’t be back and won’t recommend to anyone ever again.

Sergeartsville Inn is back and better than ever after the fire ! Good for a romantic dinner or for a special occasion, or even a quick bite in the tavern. The pheasant is always a great choice, as is the bacon wrapped filet. There is a good selection of wines, beers, and martinis. And don’t forget the tomato bisque soup!

We’ve been coming here for years, in a nutshell the place is fantastic, we’ve never had a bad meal. Service us great and Luigi the head waiter always remembers us. You have a choice of eating in the tavern, library or dining room which are progressively more formal but even the dining room is formal on dress code. Cocktails are excellent, calamari appetizer with Asian sauce is delectable, this particular trip we did a head to head between the buffalo hangar steak and the Kobe hangar steak, both were medium rare are excellent with the buffalo being lean and flavorful, and the Kobe fatty and succulent, just as you’d expect. Round it off with coffee and Luigi’s homemade tiramisu dessert for an excellent experience. Update Dec 31, 2015 — after being closed for several months because of a fire the restaurant has just reopened. We booked a reservation as soon as we found they’d reopened. We had some of our favorites that were mentioned in the prior review and the food is still excellent, especially the camel steak special! Some of the same staff are back which is great. The place looks beautiful. No reason to update my prior star rating. However there were some minor niggles. We asked to be sat in the dining room near the fire when making the reservation but were actually sat in the library which was very cold for the first hour. At least in the library room the seating is too close with tables crammed together which made for an uncomfortable situation when a table of 4 was sat next to us — it was awkward for everyone with only inches between diners and both tables asked to be moved — they moved the 4 top. If they can fix their seating arrangements and reservation niggles I’m sure they do well for many more years. Skip the braised beef short rib — it is unfortunately tasteless.

This restaurant is phenomenal on all accounts –service, value and food quality. When you first enter the restaurant, you are greeted by Tom, the host. He is the most caring, friendly and customer focused host there is. The food is outstanding and there is an extensive menu. The waitresses were charming and gracious. The wine list is spectacular. Although the food may be slightly more expensive, it is worth every penny. I took my grandma here for Mother’s Day and every mom received a beautiful rose. The food is delicious. For a personal or business occasion, this restaurant is top notch. I would choose this restaurant for a casual event or an important celebration. There is a tavern menu as well as the excellent fine dining menu. This restaurant is outstanding on all accounts.

Cute, rustic charm in picturesque Hunterdon County. Food is nothing fancy but it is well prepared. Price point for the food is right on target and portions are generous. The short ribs were delicious as was the butternut squash soup for my app. Service is also very good and the atmosphere is great, especially on a cold winter’s night by the fireplace.

I have been here before and I feel like they are losing their luster. The dining room is way too bright. The fireplace is unattended and thus the room gets cold quickly in the winter. All girl staff seem to be on top of each other. The worst part of the check was the fact they charge $ 6.00 for an espresso! Food is fresh and tasty so take your shot since it can be hit or miss.

The tomato bisque is definitely all it is cracked up to be. Just try it. My honey lavender chicken, while juicy which is a must, did not even have a hint of lavender. The honey was there, and it did not lack in flavor, but I was really hoping to taste the lavender and I did not at all. Bummer. The spinach with the meal was simple but they didn’t mess it up, and the goat cheese mashed potatoes… delish! The martini list is very substantial and the one I tried was kettle and limoncello, and it was mixed nicely and was a good pre dinner cocktail. They also have a nice beer and wine selection. The restaurant was busy on a Friday night, always good to see. I love the whole old house turned restaurant scene, and up in this area there are quite a few of them, and I love when the whole experience comes together. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for for a quaint restaurant with a lot of choices on their menu.

Lovely meal here celebrating a friends birthday. Wonderful rustic atmosphere. Extensive martini menu — had the almond joy — they made it wrong first but corrected it upon request. Bread was delicious. Heirloom tomato salad was delicious; escargot(served out of the shell) was the highlight of the meal; cod was good but a bit too saucy; ordered a special tofu veggie stir fry which was nicely done. Desserts were excellent — the chocolate cake and the ice cream. Service was above average but not amazing. Definitely a special place and worth going to.(Several exotic meats which we did not try — like kangaroo!)

LOVE the tomato bisque and think the tiramisu is the best I’ve ever tasted. My family loves the burgers and raves about the sloppy joe sandwiches. We’re not brave enough, yet, to try the game sandwiches so I can’t comment on those. The atmosphere is fantastic, whether you’re in the tavern or the fancier dining room. We’ve found the service to be better in the tavern, however. Super friendly waiters and bartender who make you feel right at home. Had a couple screw-ups with reservations so be very specific with the hosts over the phone. Beware of the high costs when you go there; I was a little shocked at my bill fist time. Otherwise I can’t get enough of this homey, charming Inn packed with history and unique beauty from another era.

Quaint with quality. This business is easy to miss when driving through the small village of Sergeantsville, but a must stop for a quality meal. The business has two menus a tavern and a dining room menu. Depending on where you choose to sit, you can order from one menu or the other. If you’d like to look at both, sit in the informal library room that is located between the bar and dining room. For a more formal dining experience, be sure to choose the dining room, which has tablecloths and cloth napkins. The dinner menu here is very interesting with plenty of meats that you typically don’t see in many other locations: venison, boar, buffalo, kangaroo, kobe, to name a few. If you sample the lunch menu, they offer a variety of meats such as antelope, kobe, boar and llama. This exotic variety of meats keeps the menus very interesting. The menu is 100% natural, free range or wild. Aside from the food selection, you’ll find an incredible cocktail menu here. «The Absolut Mess,» one of their signature cocktails, combines different flavors of Absolut Vodka to make a modestly tart and strong cocktail. A positive of ordering a cocktail is that they will bring the shaker to your table, keeping the drink colder and allowing you to get a little extra than your glass can hold. They have a solid draft selection of beers with a mix of macro & micro brews and a selection of bottled microbrews. They also offer a variety of wines to enjoy with dinner. For appetizers we had the carpaccio and pheasant spring roll, both were prepared nicely and were loaded with an array of excellent compliment of flavors. For dinner we had the australian lamb shank and kangaroo. The lamb shank was perfectly cooked and flavorful, the couscous primavera compliments the flavor of the dish perfectly. The kangaroo was an interesting new meat for my pallet, the meat is more bold than your typical steak and a lean filet type cut of meat. Due to the leanness of the steak, you shouldn’t have it cooked past medium for the best experience. The service was a downside, with infrequent visits to our table and very few refills. Our server did stop by soon after serving our entrees to check the quality, but was almost absent otherwise. One factor may be that we chose to sit in the library, which was out of the way from the typical dining areas of the restaurant. If you’re looking for a selection of exotic fare and a celebration of flavor, look no further you can find it at the Sergeantsville inn.

Had a wonderful experience without a reservation on a Friday night. Service was outstanding, food was great and presented nicely(except for the Buffalo, which looked sloppy) We will definitely be back for more! YUM!
