I completely agree with Michael R. Their apples seriously make me cry out in joy! The secret, Flatland Flower Farm uses a method called dry-farming which results in crisp, alarming flavorful apples. After eating one of these, all other apples will taste watered down. They have a very small stand at the Berkeley Farmers Market. Try them and you will see.

They carry Duchess de Parma violets. Rare variety, incredibly beautiful scent. One sniff puts Calgon to shame in terms of whisk-a-waybility(yes, it’s language butcheringly good!). My sweetie bought me one at the Farmers’ Market, and I just re-potted it in the hopes that these violets stay blue. Their website is down, btw, so any questions may need to be sent via email or phone.

Rome Beauty apples! These apples are the crack cocaine of the apple world. I eat them raw, throw them into my get-off-your-ass-conquer-the-world organic Irish oatmeal, bake pies, core & stuff ‘em for baked apples, push them on strangers like an old-time Mormon getting rid of spare daughters and slice them into fruit salad, too. Foodie wise, I live for Rome season between September and as late as December if the gods are smiling on us. The apples are organic, and as you might have guessed, the stand also sells a whole variety of organic herbs and flowers outside of apple season, which are also excellent. The staff also knows all about the plants and happily answer your questions. Okay, the original reason why I started patronizing Flatland Flower Farm’s stand at the Berkeley Farmer’s Market was because of Hedy, the beautiful woman who worked at the stand. She was not only gorgeous, but friendly and knowledgeable about all the plants she sold. Talking to Hedy got me to taste the apples. She is gone(sigh!), transitioning into a career as a midwife, but the stand is still there. Hedy, we miss you!
