Waiting For the Interurban

«Waiting» is a great Fremont public art landmark worth a quick visit. While you are here, be sure to walk several hundred feet east down 34^th Street to also see «Late For The Interurban», featuring clowns J.P. Patches and Gertrude.

Fun interactive art piece in Fremont. While living in Fremont I was impressed by the creativity that people show dressing up this city center-​piece. I like everything about this statue except for the dog with the human face… scary.

The best part of this sculpture of six figures (and dog!) cast in aluminum by artist Richard Beyer is the constantly rotating accessorization. Talk about crowd-​sourced art! I never know what sort of t-​shirts, sweaters, scarves and hats these folks will be donning, or what signs or balloons or umbrellas they will be holding, and it’s always fun to walk by and see what local residents have done to the statue on any given week. Kudos to Fremont for keeping this long-​running tradition alive and well.

Often, as I would pass by, my head would turn and I would wonder, what’s that? Then, I would get distracted and forget until it happened again a week later.
I’ve seen some fantastic decorations over the years and must admit that personally, I’ve only been up close about 3 times even though I’m in Fremont much more than that. I often tend to be across the way on the Peet’s side of the street.
This review was prompted because I was in Fremont last week (surprise) and for some reason, I felt like having a look. Okay, I lied, I was going over yonder to peer into the windows of the frozen custard shop (they were closed, thankfully, since my lactose intolerance would seek vengeance against me if they were open). Fine. The truth comes out.
Wherever I live, I’m always a bit of a tourist at heart. I’ve heard people say that it’s hard to get a picture because of traffic. True, during certain times but the traffic coming that way is fairly well timed so long as it isn’t during peak hours. After all these years, I’m still waiting to catch people decorating. I never have. I still have something to look forward to.

I love this place but it’s hard to take a tourist photo of it. I think locals decorate it as they want. One of the more adorable things I’ve seen is a sign with «Happy One Year Anniversary.» I think sometimes the decorations change overnight on some days.

Hard to take photos bc cars driving by you. The fiancé had to wait til there was a green light (he was across the street) to take photos of me d the four statues and behind the statues — a dog statue. Cute.
The characters are cute but the clothes on them today blocked what they were doing. They were wearing a shirt to cheer on a runner but I think people need to take it off after their use so others can have their turn. :/​

When I ventured Seattle… I went out of my way to grab photos of me standing next to them dressed in streamers.
I’m sad really that they’ve been waiting forever… especially the dog.

A famous landmark, not really all that awe inspiring. It is a comforting landmark, that I remember from childhood, but I can’t really say I like it.

What the crap IS this? And why are the people wearing clothes? And why does no one care that people have drawn all over them with colored chalk? And what the crap is up with the scary dog. Scary.

They look pretty cool driving by, rain or shine, or even snow days, they stand there waiting, pouting … reminds me of my bus commute days, I can’t help but feel sorry for them. However, up close, they are actually kind of creepy, so … No, I am not a fan, but I think it deserves more than three stars for the artistic value it brings to Fremont.

Ah yes. I love this because it reminds me of the Seattle that used to be in the early 90s before condo-​mania and corporate giants closing everything down.
Fremont wasn’t the squeaky clean, hip place it is now back then. It was funky, groovy, artsy, bohemian. I miss that.

This little statue family is great! A Fremont landmark for sure, and part of the community. These guys get dressed up for all occasions, birthdays, holidays, random parties, or to celebrate the sun! I enjoy seeing them in their many outfits and reading what they have to «say» on their signs. Maybe they’ll become Unilocalers and share their reviews of US!

When I drive through and take visiting friends on tours of the city, everyone remembers Fremont for it’s art. Waiting for the Interurban is always first on the tour as we cross the Fremont Bridge. I love that the 6 figures (and a dog) are often dressed in clothes, using umbrellas, and sporting shirts with a message on them.
In addition to a simple drive by, it’s important that people stop and walk up to the figures because only then can you see the subtleties in the sculpture. Just a creative, fun addition to the neighborhood. It’s been there over 30 years… when the heck is the Interurban gonna get here and take these poor folks to Everett? Maybe it’s intentional that they’re stone-​like. If someone were really waiting this long, they’d be fossilized by now!

Not exactly daring as public art goes, but a Seattle icon that makes for a solid, if run of the mill, tourist photo. What’s not to like about public art that at least motivates people to take a picture of it?

This my favorite Fremont exhibit. It is just very odd to have a group of people waiting on this island and still I sometimes think they are real.
It is also very cool that part of the deal is you can go and dress them up and put up signs for whatever occasion you want as long as you aren’t actually vandalizing them. It is always a good time seeing what someone came up with this time.

We live here and love iThis historic corner and its statue make the corner to the Fremont Bridge a treat. What shall midnight visitors done to the statue today/​Often dressed for the weather or for a party this silent statue reminds us of our artuistic heritage.

Often overlooked, sharing a neighborhood with Vladimir Lenin and the Fremont Troll is this sculpture, depicting some average people and a not so average dog waiting for the Seattle-​Everett interurban express… they’ve been waiting for a long time!
This sculpture is a joy to behold, subject to many «art attacks», which are indeed encouraged. Residents of Fremont drop in on the statue, festooning it with scarves, hats, umbrellas, balloons, sashes, raincoats… you get the idea. It is truly public art… now get out there and enjoy!

One time I was hanging out in the tiny town where my parents reside over in Eastern WA. Some guy asks me where I live these days. I tell him Fremont. He asks if I’ve ever noticed the statue of people + dog waiting for a bus. I say, of course. He tells me that he’s the artist who made it!
I’m not sure what he’s doing over in the land of longhorn steer and bigotry but I hope his creative juices are being fed so he can make more cool art.

The Fremont district is my kind of neighborhood. It’s artsy and quirqy all at the same time. Other than the Fremont Troll (aka Aurora Troll), there’s this piece of public art, made by Richard Beyer.
Once you cross the Fremont drawbridge, you’ll meet a group of life-​sized commuters and a dog, waiting for the Interurban. What makes this piece of artwork unique is that they are often decked out in used hats, balloons, or umbrellas contributed by the public.
