We had our rebuild completed almost two years ago, and recently were contacted by UBuildIt to see if we could modify our Unilocal review. The trouble is– I feel my initial review was extremely accurate. I would like to hear from the owner again that they have restructured their customer service practices, and have a policy for returning client emails or calls within a 24 hour period… the only reason I bumped up to 3 stars is because after almost 2 years, the quality of the finished work is solid, and we are very happy with the construction. Perhaps if you do not plan to be living in your home during the remodel/rebuild, and time isn’t a big factor– maybe going through UBuildIt is a decent idea. Their system for organizing the job and project progress is good. They give you a big binder to store all the plans and paperwork along with computer scheduling, etc. That part of their service is fine. Ken is a very kind man, and I think he knows the ins and outs of the business well. That said, he really needs to train his project managers to treat each client as an A#1 priority. We felt as if we were bothering people, when the reality is that we were only going with the expectations that had been directed to us in advance. We did like some of our subcontractors– and would absolutely hire them again. But allow me to be more specific with the issues we had with two subcontractors: There was one who was clearly under the influence of something, cut his hand and got blood all over the wall behind our refrigerator(which the power source was not wired properly for, before drywall was installed) did not clean it up(I have pictures), tried to shake me down for a cash payment that day(even though he didn’t finish) and got angry and huffy with me when I told him that he would have to wait until we were satisfied that everything was done properly. He had the most shoddy work putting power sources into our kitchen island that we then had to have a carpenter subcontractor fix(we deducted that $$ from the payment to him) the cut outs he made in our cabinets. How could we have ended up with such a dud of an electrician?!? We were concerned that we’d have electrical problems, and thankfully have not. We also had an appliance installer who not only had alcohol on his breath, he was very rude to me and blamed me for losing pieces to something that I had never even taken out of the box. I’m a tough mama, but he had me in tears for a minute. A woman, alone with her young children, should NOT have to deal with feeling shaken/nervous in her own home. When both of these issues were brought to the attention of those in charge, they were treated passively and without genuine concern. Effective protocol would be to do everything in their power to apologize for the lack of follow through and concern, and make it right IMMEDIATELY, not because you think the Unilocal review left several months later(which gave them plenty of time to address our issues in the meantime) is hurting the business.

Yikes… friendly, but ineffectual and no follow through. Wish I could be more positive, as Ken seems like a nice man, but he should not have offered services he couldn’t provide.
