Nurturing Knowledge School

My kids attended Nurturing Knowledge School’s program on a part-​time basis from Kindergarten through part of 5^th grade. They’ve also attended the school-​age summer program. The NKS team works hard to provide quality care with enrichment lessons that complement the learning that takes place during the school day. The kids at NKS are given the opportunity to try new things, from new foods during snack time, to art projects, to games in the classroom and on the playground. The NKS staff communicates when there are any issues, is responsive to feedback, is open to suggestions, and truly care about the children in the program. Our family will always remember NKS as having provided a safe, fun and caring place for our kids to grow and learn during some of their most formative years.

After having my daughters in daycare from 6 months old, we were reluctant to place our girls in before and after care programs. With school not starting until 930am, we had no option. What we found was better than we could have imagined. My girls received attention we had not seen in the daycares. My oldest struggled with authority and socialization. With great leadership from the top, and positive encouragement from the staff, my daughter thrived. I give a lot of credit to staff and the model of NKS, for guiding her through these tough years. In addition, they were challenged with new activities, foods, and learning opportunities. We were so impressed with the growth and happiness of my children, we enrolled them in the summer program. They are kept active with games and activities that they love… a lot better than sitting in front of the TV all day. Caring for my girls is at the top of my priority list, and Nurturing Knowledge School was better than we could have imagined.

When I was in 7^th grade, my health teacher decided to do the classic Egg-​As-​Your-​Child lesson. Perhaps you know it, as it appears to be the most overused and pointless social experiment in junior high health classes everywhere. In case you’re not familiar, it goes like this.
1) The teacher assigns each person a partner (in my day it was boy/​girl).
2) Each «couple» is given an egg representing a baby and told to keep it «alive» for a week.
3) Hilarity ensues.
When you think about it, really, what better person to keep an egg baby alive than a 13-​year-​old boy who is aspiring to be an engineer… like my class partner. He devised the best contraptions you’ve ever seen. Box padded with papertowels. Tube filled with marshmallows. Styrofoam and duct tape ball. And then, he went up to the third floor of the school and dropped our egg baby down the stairwell to see if his inventions padded the fall enough to keep that egg baby from going splat.
Because THAT was the point of the lesson.
Having said that, some of my friends were worse off than I was, having been paired with partners who were either uninterested (deadbeat) or downright cruel (abusive) to their egg babies. I’m sad to report that not many of the eggs made it.
Nurturing Knowledge is the 7^th grade boy of preschools. My real baby, a preschooler, was not cared for at Nurturing Knowledge Preschool. He was bullied by other children and it went unnoticed by the teachers until he started acting out. Then, he was accused of being an aggressor. When we took him out of the school (rapidly), he was immediately back to his sweet self.
Maybe Nurturing Knowledge will grow up to be an engineer, like my class partner, but my guess is, it will end up pumping gas somewhere just outside Tukwila.
