Walked in, and it was a turn back in time. A local neighborhood place. Bar with a few tables. I took comfort in the dated room. Added to the whole thought process, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. They make sandwiches plain and simple. Piled high, sliced thin, period. Why bother with Lettuce, Tomatoes or onions? I get it. I liked it. I loved how polite the bar tender was. I think maybe the waitress Barb was having a bad or off day. She didn’t say much at all. If she would have come off like the Ma in the Pa store I would definitely be back. I missed the warmth invite that you usually find in going to a neighborhood place like this. It’s a 3.5 star rating, to me

I graduated from Union College in 1987. That was the last time I was to Slick’s, until last month. All the old great, amazing, fantastic memories I had of Slick’s all still exist(and then some). The service used to be not so good. The service now was fantastic. But, really, Slick’s is all about the sandwiches, drinks and prices. The sandwiches were still outstanding. There were 5 of us and everyone really enjoyed their sandwiches. The prices can’t be beat. The drinks, still a lot to choose from at great prices. I wish I had a Slick’s near my office or home.

Went to SLICKS today and got the ham & cheese on rye with onions and spicy mustard. The sandwich was piled high and just to tastie for words. It is the BEST place for fresh made sandwiches. They also have a great bottled beer selection. I will return again as I have for many years. The prices are good too.

Decided to come to slicks after a friend posted about it on FB and reading the Unilocal reviews. Not much more that I can add that hasn’t already been said. Have a hankering for a good basic sandwich that happens to be HUGE and made with quality products. Go to slicks!

I have been going to Slicks for over 35 years, the first when I was 10 with the old man and a Uncle. Not sure how the owners do it, but they have been consistent with their food and the prices have not changed as much as expected for these times. Of course, all of the folks I used to go with are now gone, but everytime I visit what I used to consider home, I always stop in for a sangweedch and enjoy how nothing has changed. Sometimes I feel like everyone who has passed, are still there with me. Places like this are leaving us every year, so enjoy while it lasts. A trip down memory lane for sure.

There was a bar I went to when I was 19 called Annabel’s. [Update: SHAZAM, it’s still there! . That year I worked three jobs(and when the drinking age was still 18, in another galaxy far, far away), one of which ended at 1AM. The chief virtues of Annabel’s, a dark narrow hole in the wall bar, were(1) very cheap beer,(2) you could get a sandwich late, which consisted of white bread and your choice of three meats, with a bag of chips on the side, and(3) after«last call» the regulars could repair to the back room which had been designated a «private club», so you could still get a beer after the place«closed». It was like a real-life, dirty and cheap«Cheers». Once they knew your name, you were in the«private club». Slick’s may be the Schenectady Annabel’s: the clientele and décor haven’t changed a bit, other than aging 30 years. Given my advancing age, finding a joint where everybody is older than me is either comforting or a harbinger of things to come, I’m not sure what. In any event, I was the only person not greeted by name upon walking in the door. The very definition of an old-school neighborhood bar. Yes yes, you get your choice of five sandwiches, which consists of approximately nine pounds of meat between two pieces of bread, plus pickles or coleslaw or potato salad, plus chips, all of which are out of some industrial container. Totally exactly what I need, sometimes. Sandwiches between $ 8.25 and $ 9.75. There’s also one soup of the day, which I also suspect comes out of a giant restaurant service can. And your choice of cheap but decidedly non-crafty beers. I like it but it’s sort of an all or nothing place: great for a regular stop but not for a special trip. Still, go once, and experience Old Schenectady. No pun intended. OK, pun intended. Also, somebody has deliberately jiggered the parking meters out front so they never expire, which really takes me back to the old days.

A neighborhood dive that seems dearly beloved by locals and regulars. I stopped in for lunch with a few who knew Slick’s well, and enjoyed a cultural experience. Enormous sandwiches; ~1 lb. of great quality meat per! Sandwiches are very basic, like – classic brown paper bag lunch sandwiches. Pretty good. Bar is dark; den-like. Cute family photos decorate the walls. I’d return for another giant sandwich… and a couple beers.

A Schenectady staple. Great bar run by great people. Food is good and reasonably priced. Great place to go get a beer a sandwich and relax.

If you like eating meat, with a big quantity, this is the place to be for a quick bite, I usually order the roast beef sandwich with a PBR, then off to class! hah… but I don’t understand how the owner makes a profit by putting a pound of meat on 2 slices of bread… either way i am not complaining.

If you think sandwiches are all about the meat — and you’re the kind of person who likes cold-cut platters, this place is for you. The meat to bread ratio is unfathomably high. Sure, you THINK you’ve seen meaty sandwiches, but that was probably 1 – 1.5″ of meat on a grinder or kaiser roll. Here they come with 2″-3″ of meet on regular sliced bread. The roast beef on my was sliced nice and thin and was tender and not stringy at all. Check out the pic I snapped & uploaded…

It’s old school … you want subway go there… a lot of people love Slick’s and I’m one… Decent sandwiches… big enuf I always take a half home… I suspect the complaints above are from snobs who really should stick to places that cater to the twenties set…

This place is a freaking gem. It’s an out-dated townie bar that’s dark and kinda dive-y, and that’s why it’s so amazing. I went here with my boyfriend awhile ago, and sat at a table, away from the regulars at the bar that were all giving us The Eye. Basically, if you’re under 40 then you’re going to get glared at, because this is definitely a bar for older regulars and older regulars only. But if you’re intrigued by their 1-pound sandwiches(which we were), then suck it up and deal with the glares, because it’s worth it. The bartender made our sandwiches and sliced the meat right at a counter by the bar, so you can see everything he does. You could easily make seven sandwiches with the amount of meat they put on just one, and goddamn, if they aren’t delicious! We washed our sandwiches down with bottled Genny Cream Ale(were else are you going to get that?), but we didn’t stay much longer because it got kind of uncomfortable. I’ll definitely go again, though, but next time will definitely be when there aren’t so many other patrons around.

A small hole in the wall bar. Parking on street with pay meters. We sat at the bar and Ordered sandwiches. I ordered roast beef sandwich, split pea soup and a glass of water. I was not happy About being forced to take a bottle of Poland springs rather then just a glass of water. When i mentioned I just Wanted tap water the keeper said«NOT here your not«. The soup was ok, would not get it again. The roast beef sandwich was huge. The roast beef was sliced thin to order and was tender and seasoned well. Very good. The sandwich came with some potato chips that were not super fresh and looked pretty smashed up. The mac salad was OK. But the sandwich seemed to make up for the sides. Overall worth the trip. If in the area would go back for the sandwiches.
