The Cathedral of St John the Baptist

Everyone can appreciate the magnificence of this Cathedral! What’s to say that has not already been said? And why to write this review? To remind myself to return because the feeling of awe: for the people that created and maintain this absolutely incredible space and building. The two spires are seen throughout the city, interesting after the hatred that early dwellers showed to Catholics (…when James Oglethorpe founded Savannah, his planned city would be built around four simple prohibitions: No rum. No slavery. No lawyers. No Papists i.e. Catholics). I think it’s only fitting that the most beautiful church is Savannah is a Cathedral.

I don’t care if you are religious or aren’t, spiritual, Amish, catholic, or alien, you need to visit this church if you are in Savannah. Growing up in the area, walking into this church never got old and won’t ever. It’s gorgeous inside. Open to visitors to take a look. It’s so peaceful. I never actually went to a service here. It was just always neat to go inside and take in the beautifulness of it all.

The most beautiful church I have ever been in. We went on a Saturday and accidentally stayed past 12 when mass was starting; make sure you don’t make this mistake if you just going to look.

Wow! It’s simply beautiful from inside. Wow, never expected such intricate work on my travel. Highly recommended, must visit.

It’s beautiful to behold, but I wish there was a tour guide to really tell this gorgeous church’s story. It’s wonderful to look at, but would be even more beneficial to hear from.

This church was magnificent and really enjoyed our visit. We went inside and it was just breathtaking. if your in town this is very much worth the visit no matter what your religious affiliations. be respectful.

Simply put this place Cathedral is truly amazing to behold, breathtaking rather you’re religious or not. Upon entering there’s a sense of awe that overtakes you and holds you tighter and tighter the entire duration of your visit. The fact that although there was a crowd of people milling about you could hear a pin drop which is an amazing thing in this day and age. The fact that is beautiful cathedral is open to the public at all is astonishing to say the least. You don’t have to be Catholic which I’m not to appreciate this wonderful place. The story of Jesus which is displayed on the walls around the cathedral pulls and tugs at your very heartstrings opening your eyes to exactly what he endured for us all. This not any restaurant, hotel or historical site should be your first stop if you’re visiting the area.

Wow! I was not prepared for what we would see inside. If you think the exterior is gorgeous, just wait until you catch that first glimpse inside as you pull open the door. Yowsa! The Cathedral of St John the Baptist is breathtaking. My pictures surely don’t do the inside justice. This is a must see when visiting Savannah.

This is one of the most beautiful churches on the Western Hemisphere. As a local, I can say that the beauty of this church lives up to the hype. Whether you’re religious or not, this is a must see when visiting Savannah. Walk around, and then sit down and just take in the beauty.

This cathedral is one of the most beautiful I have ever visited. From the stained glass windows to the ornately painted ceiling, everything is breathtaking. There are tours available if you want to hear a little history. Or you could just wander on your own (when there isn’t a service) and take in the beauty.

Awe-​inspiring church! It rivals some of the best churches in NY and Boston. Extremely ornate, beautiful décor. Look up the ceiling is amazing. Popular touring spot and worth a visit for anyone into old churches or even just beautiful architecture.

A very beautiful church on both the inside and out. You’ll see it from most of the town due to the height of the towers. The interior is wonderful with great stained glass. They had a really nice nativity scene for Christmas and have no problem with tourists slowly exploring the space.

The Cathedral of St John the Baptist is one of the most beautiful churches I have ever been to. Every detail is so beautiful, both inside and out this Church is wonderful. I was in awe at its infinite beauty. I wish we could have attended mass here, I’m sure the acoustics in this place are really swell. And I am sure they have a great choir!
I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Savannah, and if I return to Savannah someday, I am most definitely going to visit this Cathedral again! Hopefully next time I can attend a service!

If you are someone who enjoys old churches and historical buildings I would suggest you make a stop off here. The photos don’t do this beautiful church justice you have to come here and see this piece of history for yourself. It is quite stunning and awe inspiring once you make it inside the church. This one of the trolley stops, but you can walk everywhere in Savannah on a nice day and visit here.

One can easily appreciate the Cathedral of St John the Baptist for it’s architectural and aesthetic qualities — regardless of what faith (if any) one subscribes to. As many have already noted, it is a sight to behold from both the exterior and the interior.
The cathedral, built in the French Gothic style features an exterior of whitewashed stucco with prominent twin spires. The interior is appointed with colorful stained glass windows, detailed murals, and intricate ornamentation throughout. The upper level houses a massive pipe organ, which no doubt would be quite impressive to hear… alas, I did not.
Definitely add this to your list of «places to see» if you ever find yourself in Savannah’s historic district.

Beautiful Church. It was pointed out on one of the trolley tours I went on and I was able to go inside and get some pictures of it. Hidden in town and a mile + walk from Bay St and the Historic district. If you do a trolley tour and want to visit, avoid Sunday morning, as there is mass that takes place. Definitely packed for church as well if you choose to go!
Architecture is beautiful, the details are wonderful. Definitely something to see while in Savannah, religious or not!
