Oh my! Amazing pulled pork with a smokey sweet BBQ Sauce. Baked Beans are better than Grandma’s. Hacked Chicken sandwich with Alabama White sauce is out of this world. Very friendly service. Refreshing place to stop while out for a motorcycle ride.

What a disappointment Lake Henshaw Café was. Thirteen bucks for the Special which is supposed to be Angus Prime. And burnt fries. Julie ordered her favorite Shroom burger and got a frozen, quarter inch thick paddy that was dry as the desert. We also made the mistake of sharing a nine dollar ‘can’ of chili. And they forgot the cornbread. This place used to be the stop after riding in the desert. Management must have changed. Skip this place now.

There were 6 of us and we were all very pleased with our breakfasts. I haven’t eaten here in 30+ years, I enjoyed the décor and of course, the view! There were only 3 tables being served so the service wasn’t an issue. I got the French toast, it was excellent, I added the sausage and it was very flavorful! Several got breakfast burritos that were huge and yummy. Although I didn’t get the potatoes, I did try them, OMG, so good! One friend got the chicken fried steak with eggs, he was happy with his. All in all, a great breakfast!

Never going again. Bad food, we went 10÷10÷15 terrible food. I had a meat lovers omelet, NOPE bacon bits for bacon, no sausage, way too much cheese. My husband had the tri tip, like others omg 4 little slices, come on! Hash browns I could of broke the window with, toast NOT toasted… Will keep going on up to Julian. We had gone there last mth food ok, but geeez TOO hot and flies gross!

We have passed this place many times but never went in. We were pleasantly surprised by the décor and found out it had recently been taken over by new management. Excellent burgers and a huge mound of onion rings(an additional charge). Servers were very friendly and attentive. A bit pricey, but portions were huge. We will definitely return.

The good thing about this place is the waitresses are friendly. The downside, I ordered the cattleman, tri tip for $ 16.95. Tri tip looked liked 4 slices of deli meat(small portion) and tasted dry. I was very disappointed, first and last time here.

We had the Tri Tip Cattleman. It was a very small portion for a hefty price of $ 16.95. We only received 4 thinly sliced pieces of meat. We could have eaten at Phi’s Bbq for that price and received a larger portion of meat and been full leaving there. Serves was good.

Its been a long time since i have come(20 years) to this place. There is a fantastic view from the restaurant. Food is average and a little pricey. Wasn’t too busy when we came. You get a good size portion of fries with your burger. I enjoyed the Inferno burger with blue cheese. Price was $ 10.75 for a burger and fries. Drinks come in a mason jar and are huge. Friendly waitress helped us today. Only concern i had was the dress code of the staff. Wasn’t a uniform and worse most of the guys working there were wearing shirts with the sleeves cut off. Not sure they passed health inspection. Hope management reads these reviews.

Sadly my Rating has gone down to a 2 ½ Star. From a 4. The reason is being a local to the area and knowing what this place was like before the new owners took over some of the changes are not an improvement but a let down. First off the re decoration of the Roundup is clean nice and simple. There is plenty of seating with booths and tables.(No outside seating) The re vamping of the menu is good and bad. On the good side it’s much smaller and simple. On the bad side much of the local favorites no longer are available. No pizza, No Fresh Ortega Pulled Pork Sandwiches. No More Fresh Handmade double fried French Fries. Only tiny flavorless frozen shoestring fries. You know the frozen cheapie kind found at any grocery store. The service was ok with our waitress being friendly and nice but disappearing and not keeping a check on us to see if we needed anything extra. I asked for mayonnaise for my burger and got a Very Tiny Dab in a little paper cup. Guess its to expensive here to give The customer enough for one side of a bun. My wife had a Barbecue salad with Brisket that was quite good. The brisket was tender, juicy and quite flavorful. My meal on the other hand was quite disappointing. I’m used to the farm fresh, Local grown, Black Angus Beef Burgers served by the past owners. Thick and Juicy.(No Longer Available Here) Also no more cooked the way you want a burger cooked. No medium rare, No medium, only Medium well. I was told that’s because they NOW only use Cheep Frozen Beef Patties. You know the Small Thin Flavorless Kind sold at Smart & Final or Costco. Could be the same place they get the Tiny frozen fries. TOBAD. This place used to have the best Burgers and Fries Around. Don’t think I’ll be coming back anytime soon. As A Local I’ll drive the extra ten minutes to Santa Ysabel or Julian for a Much Better, Fresher Burger. I Guess All Good Things Must Come To an End.

We took a drive today and saw this place in the midst of no-where. There was only 2 – 3 cars in front of restaurant(Clue!!!), Thinking people would be arriving for lunch, time was approx 10:30AM. Decided to give it a try(Big! Big! mistake) since reviews at 4.5 star. I ordered«The Stampede» breakfast with Tri-tip steak(asked for medium rare cook), eggs and country fries. Other family both ordered country fried steak. My Tri-tip was burnt to a crisp(dry like cardboard and taste like charcoal). Family and I just looked at each other and just laugh thinking to ourselves what a big mistake coming here. Did not complain, you know what they do with your food???

The food is great, but the service is even better. Stopped by on our way back from a long hike, we were a large group and our waitress managed to take care of all our needs. Kids ate well and so did the vegetarians in our group.

There were two beers on tap, Sam Adams(Seasonal) and Coors Light. The service was OK. Nothing to write home about. Deer heads on the wall at a restaurant is a little creepy. Ordered the cobb salad. It was good, but I wasn’t the biggest fan of the dressing.(I think it was a buttermilk ranch.) The place has a relaxed pace and a beautiful view of the lake across the street.

We have been bringing our family here for years. They have really worked on providing a family friendly menu and atmosphere that makes this a must stop for us when we come to Palomar or Julian. The food Is awesome, the staff are all terrific and friendly and the rustic setting and furnishings are what you would expect for a country store restaurant. We have always left with full stomachs and happy hearts. Absolutely worth the drive from San Diego and certainly a detour on the way to Julian. Stop, relax and get some good home style food.

An iconic stop between San Diego & the dessert. I love the rustic atmosphere with the view of the lake. Our server, Danielle was very attentive & charming. We stopped for an early dinner on Sunday and I had the BBQ quesadilla and sweet potato fries. All was very delicious. I hear a lot of good things about their tri-tip. I will have to go back sometime and try it. My only complaint is that they serve their drinks in mason jars. While that is very stylish and many like it, I am not a fan. That is not a big thing and would not stop me from visiting again. But that is my only complaint.

Oh my goodness… this place is amazing! We drive all the way out there from San Diego and it is well worth it! I seriously have dreams about their tri tip chili. They have the best strawberry lemonade around, and their BBQ Tri Tip Sandwich melts in your mouth. It’s hardly ever crowded in there, and I love the laid back vibe, overlooking the lake with good country music playing and deer heads on the wall. The people who work there are so nice and polite and you really get that small town America feeling when you eat here. If you are passing by, do yourself a favor and check this place out! You will not regret it!

This place is awesome! I’ve never been able to actually Check in here since T-Mobile has NO service in the area. You’re always greeted by a smile from a pretty girl who will bend over backwards to make sure your meal is great! The décor is «Woodsy» and not the owl but I think there may actually be one in the corner. Antler chandelier and deer heads adorn the walls. It looks like a hunting/fishing lodge. Don’t let this fool you. The food is great and so is the service. I’ve had a couple of the burgers and they’re fantastic. They’re served with some really tasty fries and I usually don’t like skinny fries. The BLT is a pretty simple and standard sandwich… Not so here. I don’t know if it’s the thick bacon or if it has crack in the bread or what but it’s way better than a BLT should be. Bottomless sodas, Coke not Pepsi. A couple beers on tap but I don’t remember which ones since I’ve never ordered one. Bottled beer too. I’d love to review the dinner menu but I’m never passing through at night :(Maybe I’ll make there sometime soon.
