Mehryar Ray Taban, MD

Dr. Taban managed to solicit some glowing testimonials (Caveat Emptor). I took Dr. Taban to Small Claims court in late Nov. 2015 as a last resort after 23 mos. of unsuccessful attempts at recompense for a botched surgery. He’d performed ptosis correction and blepharoplasty surgery in late Dec. 2013 resulting in an overhang: heavy folds of upper eyelid skin running down to lower lids. Two independent cosmetic surgeons attested that Dr. T. had failed to follow my «high, natural eyelid crease» as evidenced by my Before photos. Post-​surgery, I sported old, angry, lizard eyes (think Yoda).
I asked Dr. T. to rectify the situation but he only recommended a browlift (which he’d earlier said I did NOT need), or upper eyelid fillers. But 2 expert surgeons whom I consulted later said adding filler would only worsen the overhang with the increased weight. And I’d previously told Dr. T. that I did not want filler. He claimed I needed so much extra skin to close my eyes so I asked why I needed a blepharoplasty in the first place then? His response: «whaddya want from me?»
I requested a refund from Dr. Taban — just for the surgery (nothing extra for meds or aftercare). I even stated that IF he issued a refund, I’d sign paperwork releasing him of all actions or demands including that of professional negligence and also agreed not to discuss or post reference to his practice. I pled with him to at least listen to second opinions from MDs whom he respects. His response: «Not gonna happen».
All my entreaties fell on deaf ears: he fled to his office and phoned about a Porsche, leaving me in the exam room with no recourse. I stated I’d return weekly, if need be, but deserved better treatment.
Dr. Taban’s next move was to send me a letter of referral to 2 colleagues saying he no longer wanted me as a patient. I was out a considerable chunk of money AND still couldn’t look in the mirror w/​o cringing. I duly consulted 1 of the colleagues he recommended and this MD agreed to redo Dr. Taban’s work, at an added cost of over $ 7000. He normally will not touch botched blepharoplasties but felt the case was egregious enough.
In taking Dr. Taban to Small Claims, I again only asked to recoup his surgery expenses (nothing else for meds, aftercare, nor additional corrective surgery fees). But Dr. Taban doesn’t play fair: he pointed out to the judge that I’d had a previous blephoroplasty as if to suggest it’s unclear whose work was actually responsible for my horrid outcome. That first bleph was performed 25 years ago. It’s clearly irrelevant as my Before photos were taken only mos. prior to his surgery and still clearly depict my high, natural crease. Though I displayed the Before/​After photos in court, the judge decided in Dr. T’s favor because I hadn’t subpoenaed cosmetic surgeons who would testify against him (good luck with that).
Throughout this long ordeal, Dr. Taban’s accepted no responsibility. His lack of accountability remains galling and professionally unconscionable. I hold him personally culpable for my disastrous results. Such substandard care is wholly inexcusable and a clear breach of medical ethics.

I’ve had a clear, noticeable bump on my lower left eyelid for a long time and at a recent checkup, my dermatologist recommended getting it removed. She recommended Dr. Taban. At the first visit, Dr. Taban explained the procedure carefully, answered my questions, and I left feeling confident the outcome would be fast, painless and low risk to remove without affecting the eyelashes or the line of the lid. In the second visit, he did the procedure in 10 minutes in the office with just local anesthesia. People cannot tell that I ever had a bump on the lid; it now looks perfect and perfectly normal. I had some questions a day after the procedure and Dr. Taban called back immediately and answered them all. His patient coordinator is friendly, and most importantly, the care that Dr. Taban and his staff provided was excellent and the results are what I hoped they would be. Highly recommend!

My husband had large bags under his eyes and a hollow area around his cheek bone. Dr. Taban removed the fat below his eyes and moved it to flatten out the hollow area above his cheek bone. He did a fabulous job. My husband used to look very tired all the time, now the tired look is gone and he looks and feels wonderful!

Dr. Taban’s excellent skills seem to have come from attending the best schools, the Jules Stein Eye Institute and working hard to keep abreast of the latest science. He came highly recommended by another surgeon I respect and although he warned me about things that can go wrong in cases like mine, everything went perfectly.

I was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease in 2007 and since then, I had bulging eyes which were always burning and tearing. I would wake up each morning miserable and in pain. I had 2 other surgeons prior to meeting Dr. Taban. I had several tests and procedures done, but only lasted for a few months. I was so sick and tired of the pain I had to face each day, not to mention how horrible my eyes looked.
I’ve been under Dr. Taban’s care since 2009. Dr. Taban did the orbital decompression on both of my eyes in 2010 and my eyelids retraction in 2011. Healing wasn’t that bad. Bruising was normal and I was amazed by his work! I am very satisfied with the overall result. He made me look normal again. I receive compliments from family and friends everytime they see a new photo of me. — Only last month, he cauterized my lower tear ducts due to excessive dryness. Since then, my eyes have been fine and don’t get irritated like it used to be.
Dr. Taban is very professional. He is kind and honest. He answers all questions and never on a rush. I highly recommend him. His office staff are very friendly and helpful. They respond to requests in a day.
All I can say is, I’m very grateful to Dr. Taban. He brought back my self-​confidence.

I saw Dr. Taban last year per my aesthetician’s recommendation. I found him extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and very professional. At the beginning of this year, I ended up doing eye surgery to improve my eye appearance, and am extremely happy with the results. The surgery was painless, healing was quick, and the results were excellent! I highly recommend him.
