Oishii is not only the name of the truck but also my reaction when I found out I could get a taco with tempura shrimp in it. Ooooooh Shi… Now that’s some good stuff. Then again, it’s really just like a shrimp taco but with a different batter. Instead of a bread/beer batter, it’s just tempura… So why was it so good in a different way? The mushroom quasadila was also damn delicious. Though this fun guy loves him some fungai, so it’s not to surprising that I really enjoyed that. Their regular fish tacos were. well, they were okay. I’ve had some really good fish tacos in my day so it’s tough to compare them really as they’re slightly different in execution. This truck is reason enough for you OC folks to stop complaining that you don’t get many fusion truck love down your way. The first major OC specific one seems to be a pretty good choice to bust you guys out of your shell. The price tag of $ 2.75 seems a bit steep for truck food, but I suppose when in roam. Not to mention it’s «the OC»(don’t call it that), I’m sure you housewives and soccer moms can afford this stuff though. An interest fusion of Japanese and Mexican and I have to say, more shrimp is always a good thing.

As my friends and I hopped from line to line at the O.C. Beer Fest last weekend, our starving stomachs kicked our olfactory system into overdrive and soon, we were roaming around, looking for the origin of a tasty whiff. Our noses led us to the Oishii truck parked right outside of the main event. The line was fairly long, but the delighted faces of the patrons sampling their order in front of us was reason enough to give it a try. Since everyone was oscillating between slightly drunk and completely hammered, anyone whose number was called(to pick up his or her order) would start cheering loudly as if he/she won the lottery. And of course, the whole crowd of people gathered around the truck would echo the cheers with even louder shouts! It’s very entertaining! This was my first experience with a fusion truck(try swapping some of the letters around :), so I don’t know how the other vendors compare, but I have to admit that the combination of flavors(mexican-japanese) is brilliant. We ordered the tempura shrimp tacos and the bacon quesadilla and even though it sounds like it should give us an instant heart-attack, the flavors were surprisingly light and pronounced. An old quesadilla classic, enhanced with bacon bits, sesame seeds and some«secret» sauce just made the inside of my mouth smile while the outside grinned! The tempura shrimp tacos were equally delicious! I’ll definitely be back(if I can find the damn truck…)

They were at a food truck day at the Walt Disney Studios. I went back twice for more of their Fish Tacos! For $ 7.00 you can get 2 fish tacos and a can of soda. I am a fan!

I was so excited that they were here in Anaheim at the Farmers Market that I had to call up my friend to try them out! So, we got there an hour before they were about to leave, and was pretty sad because there was a sign that said they were out of fish tacos… Oh well, so on to Plan B. We ordered the #2, each of us, it was kinda pricey for what we got, but it was pretty good. It came with two shrimp tempura tacos and a canned drink. I had the orange pelligrino can drink, which was pretty good. Never in my life had a pelligrino before. At any rate, the sauce was really tasty with the shrimp. It looked really yummy when the cook gave us our tacos, but gee, we devoured them within a few seconds. I liked the presentation of it, it looked almost too pretty to eat. The veggies, especially the scallions, were really fresh and I literally was scraping it off the plate. Needless to say we were still hungry, so we ventured off to another food joint. I can attest that the hunt is not as fun as Kogi’s, but all in all, I can’t complain.

Japanese taco truck? Intrigued. My friend and I first encountered this wide eyed(I was told that Oishii is the first truck to have eyes on their windshield), raggae jammin’, shiny taco truck at the International Fair at Soka University. I tried their tempura fish taco, tempura shrimp taco, and their mushroom quesadilla. Really delicious! The tacos aren’t overcrowded with ingredients, which gave a clean but flavorful taste. The tempura fish had a good crispiness to it, the vegetables were fresh(I especially liked the finely chopped cabbage), and their sauce gave it a nice kick. They have three different sauces, but I only tried the orangey looking one. Might it be mayo and Sriracha? Maybe. The quesadilla was tasty, too. No skimping on the cheese and plenty of mushrooms and jalapenos. Yum! It’s nice to know that a taco truck is finally roaming around OC, and you don’t have to lug yourself all the way to L.A. Btw, Claudia(I think that’s her name. I got it from another reviewer. =P) loves Unilocalers! Tell her Unilocal sent you, and let Oishii’s «eyes» lure you in. :)

I was extremely surprised that Irvine allowed a food truck to drop by. I didn’t think it was part of their religion. I’m always jealous of all the LA people and their food truck stories during lunch so I jumped on Oishii Tacos when I heard they were in the hoods of Irvine. We ordered a shrimp quesadilla, shrimp tempura taco, and a fish tempura taco. It was definitely a nice change to bite into a quesadilla with shrimp. They for sure didn’t shy away from the cheese because that quesadilla was thick and cheesy just the way I liked it. The shrimp and fish tempura tacos were pricey especially given that the tacos were small. The tacos were ok. I added some more of the spicy orangey sauce to give it more POW! The ingredients(chopped tomatoes, cabbage, scallions, and onions) were very very fresh. I liked that it wasn’t heavy and very refreshing. The food truck was clean and the chef was super sweet; she also gave us free icy.

I was at a conference today and a whole train of Food trucks pulled up, and what caught my eye was the Japanese Infused Mexican Cuisine. I mean, if Korea can do it, Japan would do the same as they have with all other American cars/appliances/etc… and come up with their own fusion with the ever popular taco craze. One thing that was not too impressive was their menu. It’s either fish tempura or shrimp tempura tacos. That was their specialty. There are some veggie options, but the main filling is either fish or shrimp, but the line was just as along, and it seemed unique, and i love me a deep fried fish taco, i went ahead and tried it. $ 2.75 for each fish taco, and came out kind of disappointed by the size. It was about the size of a rubios fish taco, the fish was nice and fresh, but wasn’t really tempura’d, but more so «breaded» with panko and deep fried. It was on a bed of freshly cut green scallions, which was a nice, crisp, sharp, and earthy contrast to the fish. I rather enjoyed it. The taco was simply dressed with diced tomatos and a spicy mayonaise based sauce. It had a nice little head. Over all, the tastes melded together well, but nothing special. I enjoyed my meal, and maybe would try it again, but the whole package didn’t leave anything for the imagination. They also had a special, $ 6 for 3 machacha fish tacos. Pretty much DICED fish stir fried with onions and some spices(which were an after thought) and topped with some sesame seeds. I was expecting more chunks of fish rather than diced to make it somewhat mealy. Still nice flavor, but nothing out of the ordinary. 3 tacos was about the portion of 2 of their fish tacos. Interesting take, simple menu, clean and simple taste, A-Ok for a nice quick meal. Kind of pricey, and nothing to make you go WOW. Nice friendly staff though!

It was a random night in DTF, and this Japanese Mexican fusion taco truck just so happened to be parked outside of the bar we were stumbling out of. And not gonna lie, I had already eaten dinner, then some tacos at dinner #2 at Matador’s, but I guess I’ll just blame it on the alcohol(and not my fat ass), but we stopped here for some More tacos. This place was more of a 3.5 stars, but I rounded up because the staff was so friendly. Claudia the chef even stepped out of the kitchen to take pictures with me and my obnoxious drunk friends. The Shrimp Tempura taco was pretty good, but it was the sauce that really kicked it up a notch or two. They even had a big bottle of sauce on the side that you could use to add more of that spicy sauce on, not that you really needed more though. It was like a mix of wasabi and tapatio hot sauce. I thought prices were a little high for what we were getting, but the tacos were a pretty good size. Our orders came out pretty quickly too. The entire staff was very friendly and fun. They even had music bumpin’, which made it the perfect atmosphere for after the bars.
