Rising Star Optometry

We came to see Dr. Grisham after and deep evaluation on our son. He was having problems reading on second grade and we discovered he had problems with tracking and dimensional vision. When we approach ophthalmologists, they all concurred my son’s eye was healthy but not strong enough for reading. We start vision therapy with Dr. Gisham and Dr. Shumaker. The therapy has to be done every day at home and we came once a week, at the beginning, to asses progress and to change the activities.
After 4 months our son reach 100% of his eye tonality!!! He is catching up rapidly in third grade and he says the letters does not move on the paper any longer!!!
Thank you Dr. Grisham and Dr. Shumaker you had change our son’s future for the best and we are so lucky we found you in our way.
I am sharing our experience at school for other people to benefit for this and I could not stop thinking in write this review for other people in a similar situation as Us.

Dr Shumaker is an awesome Optometrist for kids. The new location is very convenient and modern and new.

This program works. We have twin daughters who were having difficulty in school especially with reading related issues. They both had IEPs starting in early second grade. They were reading at first grade level by fourth grade. We did the reading clinic for a few months followed by the cutting edge computer based piece that worked with spatial issues. My background is in Feldenkrais technique and I was interested to work with a clinic that understood the deeper issues regarding neurological wiring that was going on and keeping my kids from not only tracking but also fluency.
The hardest part about this program is that your kid may be resistant to doing the homework. Follow thru is essential to see results. We did work with our kids’ resistance and stuck with both the tracking and the fluency pieces over 18 months (12 months if you go twice a week). The results were amazing. Both kids are now reading at high school level. We cannot get their noses out of books. Their retention is much better than mine. (maybe that is not saying much!) They no longer struggle with language arts in school at all. In fact, they like it. We are still working with issues related to math problems in which they don’t always rewrite the problem correctly on the scratch paper when performing the solving steps. But, hey, we will get thru that one as well. It is not cheap, it is not always easy to corral your child but if you can persevere, it is very likely that you will get results. We were able to get our insurance to pay 70%. That also took some noogling on our part and more perseverance. I highly recommend Dr. s Grisham and Shumaker as well as MaryJo, the reading specialist.
