Cafe 4040

I work inside the building and did not have the time to leave campus for lunch. I decided to try this place after learning of it’s existence. Both times I went I regret it. The first time I had a burger off the grill. Very favorless and small patty. The bun was way too big for the tiny patty. There was nothing on it. Just a small condiment station with no veggies. The second time I ordered a breakfast burrito. It was small, cold and very bland. Some bites seemed to be only tortilla. The tortilla wasn’t even tasty. It resembles the flavor of a frozen Tina’s burrito. Seems like this place needs to invest in some salt. I imagine I can get a better sandwich from the subway around the corner. At least the staff is friendly.

I work next to café 4040 and I give this place 5 stars for great food and service:
My favorites on the menu is the avocado sandwich, cheese quesadilla, and any of the crepes.

I was hungry and wanted to find something close to work.
I ordered a simple bagel with eggs, cheese and tomatoes. It was very delicious! I went in without any expectation. Its very difficult to find places where they can make a simple order right.
The café is very nice. Its inside building 4040. You can take your coworker there.
I plan to try their lunch the next time. Parking was a hassle though.

Chicken club sandwich is to die for. I am addicted. Veggie sandwich is also excellent. Great food and friendly service.

This is a combined review of 3 lunches at Café 4040 in the 4040 Civic Center Building in San Rafael.
Café 4040 is a corporate café in every single sense of the word. I do not mean this in a particularly good way.
Added Note: They remember their regulars. As I stated in the original review, they are very friendly. Recently, I received the wrong sandwich in my bag. The next day, i went back. He remembered they had given me the wrong sandwich and game me my sandwich for free.
The staff is very friendly. I give them that. It is only due to this that they get rounded up to 3 stars.
I had three different chicken sandwiches. They were all middle of the road. They were freshly prepared with pretty standard ingredients. They were all bland. The meat doesn’t particularly taste like chicken. it doesn’t particularly taste like anything. The most prominent flavour on any of the sandwiches was from an aïoli sauce they use.
On one of my trips, I also tried a bowl of Italian Wedding Soup. This came in at $ 5.25. I do not know if it was freshly made or if it came out of a can. It was also pretty bland.
The ambiance is bright, clean, basic. and functional. It would be impossible to tell it from countless other corporate cafes hidden away in countless office buildings across the US.
As for price, yep, they know they have you. For a basic sandwich, a bag of chips, and a bottle of water, it will be around $ 12,50. Anything else you might add is also going to be pretty expensive.
While there is a friendly staff, the owners know they have a captive audience. They have a limited menu focused on sandwiches and soups. They also have a couple of other pre-​prepared dishes like lasagna.
One star is added based entirely on the friendly staff and the fact the space is clean and well maintained. If the review was based entirely on food and value, it would be one star. I can’t even say I will not return. Unfortunately, there will always be that day when there isn’t time to truly forage for lunch. That is exactly what Café 4040 is counting on.

its kinda the only place to eat if you don’t want to drive. the people that work there are extremely friendly. I had breakfast and lunch here.
i liked the breakfast special, there wasn’t much to it but it was tasty. nothing to be amazed with but pretty decent when hungry.
the lunch was just alright. cant remember what i ordered but it was pretty bland.
I will prob go back for breakfast if i am in the area.

My office just moved to this location a week ago Monday. When I heard there was a café downstairs, I was not expecting much. Imagine my surprise to have outstanding quality with everything fresh and chef standards. Now I eat there everyday. Have had the breakfast sandwich, several of the salads and their chicken tortilla soup.
I am a very picky eater and have not had anything less than perfect here.

These guys are AWESOME! When I call in my order they recognize my voice immediately. The sandwiches are generous and put together well. There 3 salad deal in the BOMB. Love you guys! Keep it up.

Good service, great breakfast sandwich for $ 3.50 (egg, sausage, cheese, on a English muffin), lunch sandwiches– roast beef, salami, turkey, chicken, salad options.

You know those places you just stumble upon? This isn’t one of them. Even if I tell you how to find it, you might still miss it. So, I guess this would be the perfect place to meet someone you either don’t want to be seen with or someone you’re trysting with clandestinely. If that’s your thing, here’s what you’ll find:
Café 4040 is a simple little weekday lunch spot tucked into the ground floor of an office building, just beside the (free) parking structure. Sound appealing?! Well, with its high ceilings and one south-​facing wall of glass, it does exude a nice airiness. If it’s sunny but cold out, this would be a good place to sit inside by the window and bask in the sun like a cat. And while you do that, you can eat and drink secure in the knowledge that you won’t run into anyone you know.
The offerings are basic: sandwiches, salads, crepes, coffees. I had a small salad with a scoop of tuna ($ 6.25). It was adequate but not nearly enough food to qualify as a full lunch. A friend recommends their more substantial mediterranean plate, in the $ 8 range. It looked good and more filling.
There’s a little outdoor space between the café and the parking garage. People who work in the building sometimes go there to smoke or hang out with their dogs. That’s pretty much all that happens here. If that sounds appealing, well, now you know!

Quite good for being in an office complex. The salads here have always been fresh.

The food is awesome, but very expensive. Expect to pay about $ 8 – 9 for a sandwich and drink or about $ 8 for a burger off the grill. The owners throw an outdoor BBQ with patio seating every Friday during the warmer months which is a nice touch and something I definitely recommend to check out.
If you’re looking for a cheap lunch this place is not for you, however if you’re willing to pay for good food it is worth the money to check this place out.

I picked my boyfriend up on my lunchbreak and took him with me while I did my banking, then to the store, and then with about 10 minutes to spare drove up here to Café 4040 so he could get some lunch while, you know, we were on lunchbreak.
You know, I worked forever right across the parking lot but never ate there. My bad.
BF got a sandwich and I was very jealous of it, because I’d left my food back in the fridge at work. It looked darn good. It was one of those sandwiches you can tell it was made with love. So we will be back soon.
They had a special where you order 3 types of salads for like $ 8 or so. That’s what I want to get. Also, the outside eating area looked very nice… Too bad there’s so many good places to eat in the area, because I may not make it back very soon.

Two guys own this Café in San Rafael (Chris and Justin). They serve good breakfasts and lunch during the week. This review however, is for their catering service. HUGE prawns with a kicking horseradish cocktail sauce, fresh fruit with an astonishing range of cheeses, little mini caramelized onion thingys which pop in your mouth and best of all, some of the most tender beef, cooked to perfection which melts in your mouth. If you need an event catered or need to refer someone to a kick butt catering company, these dudes should be your number one choice.
