Nice disc golf course. 9 holes. Cost is free. Mostly a short course with few trees, but tough as most of course is either uphill or down. No one there when I went. Con would be that some of my discs got scratched as there is not really any grass.

I like this course. It’s never crowded and reliably consistent. It’s not plush and it’s not especially challenging to get par on every hole. Go there with a «par=2» mindset for each hole, and then it’s tough. If you’re a pro, go there and get your aces. It’s a great place to go practice your accuracy. Holes 1 – 3 are within reach for an average golfer to have a chance for an ace. Hole 4 can be well played with a nice left-to-right curve. Hole 5 is a little longer and the final of five uphill holes. Hole 6, across the summit, has a large tree in front of and slightly left of the pin. Hole 7 is downhill and directly behind a large pepper tree that demands an approach from the left. Holes 8 and 9 are downhill and long, with not much room for error, other than a fenced in ecological preserve that eats your disc if you let it drift too far to the left. There is a nice practice hole near the basketball court and picnic tables for groups to gather. Finally, the park has a port-a-potty, a drinking fountain, and plenty of parking. It can get quite hot during the summer and quite windy in the afternoon. Watch out for red ants if you’re planning to put your bag down on the ground for an approach shot. The course is well marked with signs and benches at almost all of the nine holes. Each hole has a concrete tee and a good basket. It’s a quality course and should not be overlooked. I’ve played on some amazing and beautiful disc golf courses all around the country, including the top-notch Morley Field near downtown San Diego, but the great courses nowadays are often just too crowded and you end up waiting forever on each hole. Although Morley Field is probably my favorite course anywhere, I’ll take Montiel Park any day because i can play at my own pace and it’s a convenient place for some friendly competition.

It’s probably just the time of year, but I went there today and the weeds/flowers are waist high in most places. Shoes, socks & shorts all had pollen or something all over them. I was picking fox-tails and other things out of my socks & shoes forever. It was OK, but I’ll stick to Kit Carson.

Montiel Park is a nice little 9 hole disc golf course built by a father and son who donated the land to the city. You play 5 holes uphill and 4 holes downhill. It’s not the biggest, best, or hardest course around. But it’s a great place to go and get better. Lots of good drives were you can tweak all parts of your game. It’s never crowded too, so you can get lots of games in. Perfect for a skins game. The wind can wreck havoc sometimes, but you can deal with it. When you get to the top of the course you get a full view of the new hospital their building in San Marcos. The thing is gigantic. The view looks like an industrial area you see in a comic book on the one nice day in Gotham. Oh and I almost forgot it’s free. Fun little course to spend a few hours with friends. [also has a Basketball half court and little dog pen area]
