Don’t come here. Waited for an hour for the food and when it came it was underwhelming. The only exception was the salmon skin roll. Most places don’t know how to make it correctly, and while the rice wasn’t seasoned, the salmon skin itself was cooked properly. Service and chef are extremely slow. And the place only has 8 tables and a bar with three stools. It is far too small to be this inefficient. Again, avoid this place at all costs.

This is by far my favorite sushi place to go enjoy original Japanese food. The chef is super nice and get bunch of traditional options! Go try his Chirashi sushi or his orange sunrise!

So far so good. As always I had the spicy tuna roll first just $ 4.30. I absolutely love the size of this place reminds me of sushi harbor in Escondido. It might be a little bit bigger but in a good way. Two TVs on wall playing tennis. Bar area table is a lot wider then usual give the guest more room to eat. Playing nice music and not busy at all, prices are great I got another roll called Hawaiian roll $ 9.50 ordered from the lunch and dinner dining in special. The place is clean and I see the Grade outside window is A+.

Amazing food and service! Been a regular for many times already. See my previous reviews :-D Must order their orange sunrise, which is one of a kind, with salmon, masago, quail egg and imitation crab. Not quite a fan of their rolls but Japanese sushi, yes!!! Also must get their maguro tuna and yellowtail. Very fresh and good quality!

We ordered sashimi, a rainbow roll and mixed tempura to share on a Saturday night around 5:30pm. The place had no one in it which got me worried, but everything we ordered was fresh and delicious. This is a small place with small place ambiance. The only thing I would not order again is the hot green tea which was served as a teabag and water. The service was fast and friendly.

If you’re looking for a friendly neighborhood sushi bar, this is it. We came here on a Thursday night for our weekly date night and it was fairly quiet. A few patrons were sitting at the bar talking it up with the sushi chef; we decided to grab a table. There are only about a half a dozen tables in this place, so it keeps its unassuming neighborhood feel and doesn’t get too loud or rambunctious, which does tend to happen at a few sushi places, once a few folks at the bar tend to have too much sake and Sapporo! We ordered a crunchy roll, salmon tempura bento box, and an udon bowl. The salmon and rolls were fine, but the udon soup was just a little too salty — I wouldn’t worry too much about this because at sushi joints, it’s all about the rolls and the fish. At the end of the meal, our server offered us some free dessert tasters: fried bananas and mango mochi ice cream. Score!

What you will first find coming to the restaurant is the unique atmosphere, the clash of framed pictures of classic and modern American media celebrities, alongside a few frames of animé art, which I find interesting because it demonstrates the owners personality and a home like sense I haven’t felt almost anywhere. The music was likewise a mix of jpop and classic pop. But, you’ll want to know about the food. First we ordered mizu. It was tasty, maybe a little on the saltier side but good. Another part I enjoyed was the Ramune Japanese sodas offered which most«authentic Japanese restaurants» don’t have. The sushi was good, but overall not exceptional. One element that stood out was that the flavors weren’t balanced, for example, the Special role was rather overpowered by the cream cheese. Service was great and it was nice to see the owner himself hand make our roles behind the bar. Overall, the food itself wasn’t particularly remarkable, but everything together made the visit something memorable, and definitely a place I’d like to visit again.

When we first walked in, we were greated with a friendly smile from the chef and server. There is a mix between western and Japanese pop culture scattered throughout the restaurant and on the walls, very interesting! We were treated warmly and kindly by a very attentive waitress. Everything tastes very fresh, came out in a timely manor, and we were even given free dessert! Also, our waitress kept up on refilling our drinks and clearing any messy plates without disrupting any ongoing conversation. As we left they wished us a good day, which is always nice! Give this place a try, very interesting with good service, environment, and staff.

This is my favorite sushi spot in California! Fish is fresh & rolls are consistent size and taste! Bento boxes are a nice go-to if you’re not up for a sushi roll. They have a nice variety of Bento boxes that include miso soup, salad & tempura. They even have a lunch/dinner special menu(Dine-In only) with a variety of appetizers as well as rolls for a bargain price… which I’m sure someone has a photo of on here… if not, I’ll take one next time I go in. I can’t forget to mention they give you complimentary mochi and tempura bananas with whipped cream for dessert(minimum purchase of 2 people I think?) The owner of the restaurant is passionate about his food & he is out there behind that sushi bar everyday! Once in a blue moon he won’t be there… but 95% of the time he’s there! He plays his iPod which has tons of rock and roll classics to Japanese animé music! The restaurant is decorated with posters, art and toy collectibles along with a mini disco ball! The waitress’ are always extremely accommodating and sweet as can be! I always feel welcomed here, always greeted hello & goodbye! I’m guessing the max occupancy of this place is around 40? Tiny spot & I like it that way! I come here 4 – 5 times a month. Took me such a long time to write a review for this hidden gem. They certainly deserve 5 stars! Enjoy my fellow Unilocalers!

This is a sushi restaurant off West San Marcos that I probably wouldn’t have gone to if I hadn’t seen it on Unilocal,to be honest! Ambiance: It’s a super small place with Audrey Hepburn and Animé posters plastered all over the place. Doesn’t really look like much but the place is clean and there’s a cute little fish tank up front! Service: We had eight people in tow so we took up quite a bit of space but the server handled us wonderfully and was super polite and attentive to our orders. Food: We just ordered as a group so I’m not really sure what we got but the sashimi was super fresh and there was this fried salmon roll that tasted delicious! I would recommend getting the calamari salad to start with, probably my favorite part of the meal. Everything here tasted very fresh — and that’s the most important thing to me when I go to a sushi restaurant! Would go again!

Came in on a Monday night Not a big restaurant with a lot of posters on the wall. Ordered all the happy hour dishes and also some rolls. I ordered a salmon bento and my cousin ordered a sashimi bento. All the happy hour dishes and rolls comes out fairy quick BUT it took them about 40 minute to bring out my cousin’s bento and Mine was even worse, about an hour to make grilled salmon? It was not even busy or crowded. The food was alright but the wait was ridiculous. If I ever come back, ill just order stuff from sushi bars or small dishes instead of bentos, bowls, or combination meals…

Came to Hyuga at 6PM for dinner on a weeknight. The restaurant itself is fairly small, and the evening we came there were no other people dining(but they had a LOT of take-out/catering orders) Main takeaways: –appetizer and dessert on the house. woo! neither was anything particularly impressive(appetizer was pickled cucumbers and dessert was fried banana w/an ice cream mochi) but the gesture was extremely appreciated! –the menu is on the small side, and is limited mostly to rolls and some hot kitchen items such as katsu but they offer some good deals both for lunch and dinner –ordered a baked scallop roll; im usually not a fan of baked rolls since i find them to be too heavy and cream based but Hyuga’s baked roll was excellent! not heavy at all and they didnt drown the scallops in sauce –bikers roll: that came with soft shell crab, crab, avo, and spicy tuna on top — was also very good. Overall, we had a good time at Hyuga. It’s simple, but what they do, they do well. Prices are reasonable and service was also excellent. Both sushi chefs and the waitress were very nice.

We went here because of the great reviews but it honestly fell way short of expectations. It took forever to get our rolls and when they arrived it was at separate times like… we finished the entire roll then waited 5 minutes for the next set. Even for the dinner specials we still spent $ 45 for our meal. All that and the inside is kind of a dump, the waitresses came around pretty rarely, and I have a suspicion that they just threw whatever they wanted into the rolls since 2 rolls with«spicy tuna» were way different. I’m not going back.

Based on my previous review, you can tell my boyfriend and I love this place. I think our feelings have changed a little bit. I think this place is about 3 and half stars to 4. Here’s my reason: 1. The last few times we have been there, the service was so slow. It was a full house in there with one sushi chef. We were starving! 2. The sushi chef/owner is socially awkward at times. The main chef hardly ever say a single word. The younger chef is more friendly and inviting. I think part of the fun of sitting at sushi bars is the conversation and receiving recommendations from chef which I feel that this place lacks. As regulars, we wish the chef would let us know what’s good for the day or maybe spice up the nigiri so that we can try something new! 3. Sometimes we are offered the banana/mochi dessert but other times we weren’t.The last time we were there, we saw a table being offered the complimentary dessert while none was offered to us. Oh wells! We would still recommend this place as a good spot for sushi but I find myself not wanting to come here as often as I did before.

Smaller sushi restaurant. Had the spicy sashimi salad. Very nice assortment of fresh fish and perfect amount of dressing. Not very spicy. A bit pricy at $ 16 but I felt like the fish was worth it. Will repeat.

Absolutely one of my favorite sushi places. Friendly staff that never fail to greet you and knowledgeable servers. The gyoza is fantastic with a tangy ponzu sauce that makes my mouth water. The sushi is always fresh and well worth the visit.

First off, don’t be fooled by its random looking environment of Naruto animé posters next to Audrey Hepburn and Michael Jackson. What I learned my first night there from the super kind sushi chef at the bar is that everything on their walls-from posters, handmade art, employee photos and more are all an embodiment of the owner and staff throughout their 7+ years in San Marcos. Their menu has that same approach in that they have a large variety of very authentic and comforting-flavored items of various sushi, bento boxes, appetizers, desserts, and drinks. Because this was my first time here, the chef was nice and recommended us a few of his favorite sushi based on our flavor craving that night. Choosing a bit of spiciness & sweetness, my friend and I got two rolls, plus agedashi tofu-all of which tasted incredibly delicious. There are a lot of sushi restaurants to find in San Marcos, but this place is truly is one of best in the the area for good prices, very kind staff and great flavors. I would definitely come back again and often.

We have eaten here many times, but it seems that the last several times that we have eaten there, the food and the service was very bad. We were there last week during the weekday and the service was lousy. They were painfully slow and they messed up both of our orders. To add insult to injury, they still charged us for the wrong order, as well as an order that was missed. The place was not even that busy. They can definitely improve on their customer service. I’m feeling generous today, so I’ll give them three stars… otherwise they deserve two stars.

This place has become a family favorite. Upgrade from 4 to 5 stars. This place is a hidden gem. I can’t say that I would expect to find such a great Japanese restaurant in the bowels of San Marcos. I say ‘Japanese’ because frankly their sushi plays a very close second to their other menu items like the ramen, karaage chicken and other small plate goodies. However the consistency and fresh fish make this my fave place for sushi, but I always start with a cold Sapporo and a fried chicken or fried oyster side dish to get the party started! A bit reminiscent of a yakitori bar without the yakitori. But I’m not complaining… I’ve been wishing for a ramen place in North County SD and I think I finally found it. Their miso broth is rich and reminded me of the pork-based soups in the crowded, eat-while-you-stand noodle houses.
