I love this place! When you walk inside, you are truly in a different world. This is unexpected when looking at the outside of the building. The stag is kind and attentive and the food is delicious! I highly recommend checking this place out if you like Chinese food. I drove by this place hundreds of times before I finally went in, and I am really glad that I did!

Place was not busy on a Sat night. One other table besides ours. Staff, including the waiters, were in the dining room cutting green beans for all to see. Should have been our first sign this was not a well run establishment. My friend’s order was delivered and after a 5 – 10 minute wait, with no one coming over to explain, my order finally arrived. Had to ask the waitress what took so long with my order since she has the common sense of a gnat apparently. She said the kitchen made the wrong order and had to start over. No apologies, no comp on my order. VERY disappointed with the«service«. Won’t be going back.

The food is great ! And the service is exceptional! The manager is so amazingly sweet she gave my baby girl some chicken noodle soup for free to take home and a little dissolvable cracker while we waited for our takeout. The wait was not long at all either! It was just a great time even if it was just take out!!!

Man!!! This place is awesome! I never would have thought to go here given the name and outside appearance, but I am so glad that I did! Best Chinese food I’ve had in this area so far. The hot braised chicken was so crispy and gooey with sauce, their pot stickers were cooked to perfection, even had to come back the next day to try another dish! The sesame chicken was also amazing! So happy I found this place. Will probably become a regular here.

My usual go-to Chinese joint is Yong China, but I drive past Steak & Rice several times a week en route to our dog park, and after smelling it so many times, one can only go so long without developing a very intense desire to try it. Last night the husband and I ordered carryout and it was ready within 15 minutes. We ordered hot braised chicken, pork fried rice, dumplings in hot oil, crab rangoon, and ate every last bite of it. It was really good. I’m usually a very picky Chinese food critic, but they had great white meat, the breading and sauce was on point(though I would say for hot braised chicken it was a little on the sweet side, but still delicious), the dumplings were great, and the rice was tasty also! The crab rangoon weren’t anything extra special but they were still good, and they hooked it up with the red sweet and sour sauce I love so much. All in all a great experience and I would definitely order again!

Outstanding mom and pop Chinese restaurant! I tried their most popular dish, Hot Braised Chicken. This was a delicious white chicken meat dish that was deep fried with a semi sweet and hot glazed sauced. Served with white rice this dish is a great lunch option. The dish is not too hot or spicy; rather, it’s perfectly balanced. I also tried the Hot Sour soup and Egg Drop soup. Both were outstanding soups! I particularly liked the Egg Drop because it included a few sweet corn kernels at the very bottom of the cup. What a great treat toward the end of me eating this soup. It was a great surprise! The potstickers were also served hot and delicious. No signs of frozen pork inside! The potsticker sauce was a standard soy sauce vs potsticker sauce. It was fine. Lastly, we tried their almond cookies for a after dinner treat. Solid and perfectly cooked these cookies made a nice ending to a wonderful meal.

After a few visits, we found their dishes. The Taiwanese noodle with shrimp and the egg foo yong are both very good. The staff is friendly, but the place needs a deep scrubbing. Walls, windows, curtains… everything needs a deep clean.

Enjoyed several dishes– pork lo mein, sesame chicken(had a nice spiciness), and Mongolian beef. Crab Rangoon was nice. Able to accommodate a nut allergy.

I am cheap. I admit it and I am not ashamed. Why is this relevant? Because every time I come here I flip to the back of the menu and order one of the dinner special meals that come with an egg roll and soup for only 10.95. I have had several of the dishes and they were all good. But this tactic has come in the way of a basic restaurant principle that I have: order whatever is in the name of the restaurant. If you go to Johnny’s Ribs, get the ribs because the chicken will suck. So why do I not order the steak and rice when I come here? Because it is 13.95 with no appetizer and no soup. But I had been missing out this whole time. Try the steak and rice — they thought enough of it to name the place after it and it is worth it.

Great location! Asked for a free egg roll and got it in my take out order. Ordered orange beef and fried rice. The orange beef had a flavor that I’ve never tasted before and I order this everywhere. It wasn’t terrible just different. Fried rice was just fried rice. Where was the vegetables?

Their fried rice was horrible. I also had the sweet and sour chicken. Also… A bad result. The fried rice even looked and smelled different than other places. My friend and I threw our take out away. The small amount I are made me sick all night long.

I really dig this place – everytime I study over at meramec we head over here for their lunch specials. It’s about the same price as your typical chinese takeout. The place itself is clean and spacious with friendly staff. The food tastes pretty fresh without it being too greasy. The sauces are what I really like, tasty without being overly salty. I’ve tried just about everything on their lunch menu and liked everything. Their wonton soup is delicious!

This place is a little sketchy from the outside but those turn out to be some of the best. And that’s exactly what happened. Their Lo mein(soft noodles) is one of the best I’ve had. It’s peppery which gives it a little kick. The fried rice that you can substitute in a meal is pretty tasty as well. The rest of the meal was vegetarian delight and vegetable shrimp which is the same. It was good but nothing special. We’re definitely going back to try the peppered shrimp and to get more of that Lo mein. The one thing I thought was weird was that they have their chairs for sale. I hope they’re not going out of business because we just found this place.

I’ve been going here all my life, and my parents have ever since they opened. The wait staff is friendly and funny, the food is always good(I can only remember once when I wasn’t too impressed but they had a new chef and that was a long time ago), and it’s a nice place to take friends. Everyone who goes with me ends up loving it. I can’t recommend this place enough! I highly recommend the chicken with vegetables or seafood nest!

I have been coming to Steak and Rice ever since I was born… for real. I was raised on Steak and Rice take out. This has been my family’s go-to since the dawn of time and every time I love it. It’s definitely a hole-in-the-wall type place that has loads of character. I’ve met the owners a million times and they are super nice and even remember our last name. We bought a catering order from them for my high school graduation party and they gave me a «present’ which happened to be 60 potstickers(For free!). This gesture really exemplifies how much they care about their customers. My favorite things that I get every time I place an order is hot-braised chicken and their pork-fried rice. I could eat these for the rest of my life. The hot-braised chicken is a breaded chicken(on the sweet side of the taste-spectrum). It’s hard to describe but if you are into typical«orange chicken» dishes then you will love this! Their pork fried rice is one of the tastiest I’ve ever had – especially considering Steak & Rice’s price point. They put egg and pork and veggies in it, it’s great. I don’t know what they do to it but I love it. I also love that they don’t use a lot of ginger in it. I’m not a big fan of ginger and a lot of Asian cuisine sometimes ruins their rice with too much ginger. I don’t know why this place gets such a bad rep on Unilocal. It deserves a lil’ more love if you ask me. It’s a fantastic choice for cheap carry-out. Give it a try!

I should listen to my wife more often. I’m now working in the vicinity of an area where my wife worked at for about a year or so. She’s pretty familiar with most of the lunch establishments that are still there and I’ve always been asking about Steak and Rice. She’s always said that it isn’t worth trying. My rebelling against(yeah. Rebel is the right word for this context) this probably arises from the fact that a lot of times I want to try some place, the wife says that it isn’t worth trying because she’s already been multiple times with coworkers. Just about 100% of the time, she’s right, but c’mon. There has to be ONE time! … but yeah this place has decent takeout food at not so great portions and pretty lame beef noodle soup. The main thing was that the broth was just overly sweet and I didn’t taste much of the«Taiwan» style that they touted so much. The beef wasn’t cooked all the way. Usually I don’t care about the noodles as much but I might as well throw in there that the noodles weren’t so great either. I might give their spicy wontons a try, but it’ll hard for me to bother when I live so close to Famous Szechuan Pavillion. That and there are plenty of other takeout restaurants to try first. «I told you.» — Wife

It does look very sketchy and shady on the outside. I’d drive by so many times wondering what was inside. Finally decided to go it and… It’s very nice. The customer service was wonderful. I was greeted as I entered, the lady behind the counter was pleasant and helpful… blahblahblah…on to the food. I went with the dumplings in hot oil as recommended by another reviewer. Let me tell you… AYE-MAY-ZING!!! Also got two egg rolls(nicely done. Not greasy or gross looking. Tastes great) and General Tso Chicken(big pieces of chicken… not overly fried… tasty). Guess I found my new restaurant for take out!

I have been a huge fan of this Kirkwood staple since my days of living right off the main strip. It was close and reasonably cheap, and I became a fast fan. Now, I drive out of my way for a taste of the delicious offerings at Steak and Rice. It might look a little«hole-in-the-wall» from the street, but the food is great. My favorite entrée is the Sesame Chicken, but I choose to add a little green to my deliciously fried bit of heaven, and have them add broccoli. The Lo Mein is fantastic… a great day after drinking choice for lunch. They also have Chicken Noodle Soup on their soup menu. I say that the Sesame Chicken is my go to meal, and that it what I ordered tonight. Tonight, there were some changes to this recipe I’ve savored for many years. The chicken was still deliciously crispy, but there were big slivers of garlic in the sauce, and it tasted almost overpowering tonight. They have recently undergone some major floor rehab, and have updated the flooring to hardwood(or knock-off… I didn’t get that close to investigate). That change, in addition to a few others, have really helped with the aesthetic. The one thing that really turned me off was a trip to the ladies the last time I went in for a bite. Besides the Christmas tree hanging out in the stall, it was exceptionally un-clean, and smelled like a porta-potty set on a job site in 105 degree heat. If I weren’t there to celebrate my own birthday, I would have gone elsewhere. I’ve never risked that restroom again. Overall, this is a great little place, and despite the old adage that if a restaurant has an uncleanly restroom, they must have an uncleanly kitchen, I will continue eating here. I just won’t use the restroom. Happy Dining
