It had been many years since I’ve been to House of Bread so thought the other day, I would visit. While the selection looked fine, I was a bit stunned at the rude customer service, or lack there of. One of the workers behind the counter, a shorter, heavy set woman(20 something?)with curly hair had a chip on her shoulder and seemed rude which was enough to make me turn around and walk out the door. While I get we all have bad days, my feeling was that was just her normal everyday sneer. I’m sure the bread is quality — and my review is not about that — but heck, can a small, local business afford to have unpleasant workers? Again, my rating is not about the bread.

I made my own sandwich here and it was great. Roast beef on a parmesan basil bread with the works was pretty life changing. The bread was sooooo soft. Great stop on my road trip.

Good bread makes an enormous difference in the quality of a sandwich, elevating the simple ingredients of my vegetarian sandwich to something really wonderful. Additionally, I got a loaf of gluten free bread, by far the best gluten free I’ve had: simply no comparison to the packaged breads at Whole Foods. Also, don’t miss their peanut butter and nut energy bars, which are delicious. House of Bread combines excellent ingredients, fresh cooking, and friendly service. It’s the best bread experience I’ve had outside of Europe, and a must stop when passing through SLO.

I don’t know where these people get the crazy idea that having almost everything made of sourdough constitutes a well-rounded bakery. I’ve gone in there three times looking for French bread, only to be told that they make it once a week, and it’s gone by that afternoon that they make it. No Italian loaves whatsoever. Not one loaf that is rye or pumpernickel. Really? And when you point this out to the kid who works there, all you get is an indifferent sneer. Their«Grandma“s White Bread» is way too dense; I may as well go through the hassle of making it myself. These people are borderline frauds, in my opinion.

Every time I’m in #SanLuisObispo I stop here. Super friendly university students work the counter, and the bread is better than my own. Lots of variety, but get there early if you want Cinnamon Swirl.

I had the best sandwich today. A nice bread, turkey, cream cheese, cranberry, lettuce, tomato. Best sandwich I have had in a long time. Excellent

This place is amazing. We come by for bread and treats(the apple cinnamon bread is fantastic) pretty regularly. The sandwiches are delicious. I am very popular at work when I bring in cinnamon rolls and chocolate croissants. If you are in town and hungry, make the trip over to House of Bread. If you might be hungry later, stop by and pick something up. If you are hardcore in your love of bread products, sign up for one of the classes. They are lead by the head baker and you get to make a ton of delicious food to take home. I just finished the kid’s class with my son and we both had a blast.

Still love their breads. The bread slices should be thicker for their sandwiches because mine was falling apart. They also need to get WiFi.

Recently had some gluten-free, dairy-free bread from here, and it was absolutely wonderful.

House of Bread. The name pretty much sums it up. They do bread, they do it daily, they do it like it’s a form of artistry! They do it like they love making bread. They did it yesterday, they will do it today, and they will do it again tomorrow! Maybe they think they are making something more than just bread?

Varied and wonderful, this is the place to taste and purchase bread in the area. Lot’s of samples upon request and they do a great job explaining their products. Another quality fixture in SLO. –G

San Luis is blessed with beautiful beaches and bread. Dozens of varieties of soul-satisfying fresh breads and baguettes are baked on-site daily at House of Bread, like the Cinnamon Swirl, Raspberry Swirl, Garden Herb, Basil Parmesan, Focaccia, Squaw, Jalepeno Cheddar, 9 Grain, Whole Wheat, Spelt, Apricot Walnut, Apple Cinnamon and more. Over the years, HOB has expanded into sandwiches, housemade soups, artisan salads and signature desserts like cinnamon rolls, granola, pastries, scones, cookies, brownies, biscottis, muffins, energy bars and berry bars. Don’t forget to get your free samples fresh from the oven… the lady gave us huge samples of zucchini bread and cinnamon swirl. The samples we got were so generous they could almost double as dessert. For lunch, we split the Sunrise Sandwich, which is filled with scrambled egg, choice of cheese and tomato on sourdough and the Cranky Turkey on Garden Herb. Both were excellent! The Cranky Turkey is a tasty union of turkey, cream cheese, dried cranberries and tomatoes. I’m not a huge turkey/cranberry sandwiches but with the addition of cream cheese and herb-infused bread, this blend was wonderful! I liked the Garden Herb so much, I brought a bag home and made sandwiches all week. I will continue to pick up breads every time I’m in SLO(they will slice it all up for you too) –I so enjoyed having fresh bread all week. Check out their special holiday pies and treats throughout the year. You can pre-order special treats like stollen, pumpkin bread, cinnamon roll wreaths and specialty pies. Can’t wait to come back to House of Bread. Now that I’ve been away from SLO, I really miss this wonderful shop. There are franchises opening up in many different states so be sure to check out the various locations«sprouting» up.

YUM. So very many types of bread, and very friendly and knowledgeable service too. I had some willpower and only bought one bread on this visit — the Triple Chocolate Heart. Oh man. It’s tasty, but it becomes incredible when toasted. good thing for my waistline that I don’t live near here, but I will eagerly stop by again on future roadtrips in the area

Great food! I always get a bagel or grilled sandwich from here. Never lacks quality or size! Staff is always really friendly. Yet every time I’m waiting for my food I notice it’s usually just one person preparing all the meals. & that’s maybe why it takes so long. Hellloooo someone help them out! Understaffed maybe?

Delicious! And they give samples! Everything we tried had a taste that suggests to me excellent ingredients. The spiced carrot bread is really amazing – I got instantly excited when I tasted it. I love bread, and what they make here is very good. recommended.

A business must be stellar to receive five stars from me, and this one definitely tops my list of indulgences. I pick up challah from them on Thursdays, and often a sandwich or cup of soup when I’m picking up. Simply walking in the doors is enough to keel over from pleasure, but on top of that, I delight in their delectable lunch offerings and the best challah bread on the Central Coast(although it’s rare to find in this two-horse town, I know). Their service is incredible. Every time I’ve been in, I’ve been offered a sample of anything I wanted, just for being there. They’ve been able to handle large orders for family in town during the holidays, and my sandwiches have always been ready the moment I walk in the door(because I call ahead). Just be cautious going there, because you are going to get hooked! Oh, well. Hooked on bread works for me. ;)

I have been going to the House of Bread for several Years and am updating my Unilocal review. Fresh Baked Bread is always great, the free samples are always offered and make a great appetizer for lunch. The Sandwiches are custom made, so be patient, and it is always worth it! Small parking area, sometime I have to drive around the block to get parked, but I will be returning often. Oh Yes, get the little card stamped and in a bit you get a bonus loaf!

This one is just for their chocolate zucchini bread: D I really really crave this when I’m in need of something sweet or chocolatey. Their bread is perfect! I usually get a loaf of this for the week. The bread is nice and moist from the zucchini and it has a nice subtly sweet chocolate taste. SOGOOD. Best part is that they have this bread every day, so you can get it anytime! It’s about 7 dollars for the loaf, worth it.
