I couldn’t believe it when Cabo San Luis burned down! We were traumatized thinking about the fate of the poor little dog fish who always hung out in the lower corner of the huge salt-water tank. And the puffer, the shrimp, the moray eel.(sigh) We still crave our weekly trips to Cabo to enjoy their chef’s special. The kids loved the fish tacos. We miss you Cabo San Luis!

I still get teary-eyed just thinking about the little puffer fish in the awesome fish tank… I imagine his last moments and hope that he and all his fishy friends went quickly and painlessly :(RIP, puffer, you were my favorite and I love you. I also tear up thinking about how there is no place in SLO to get a Rubio’s-style fish taco. When Cabo went up in flames, I had to resort to Baja Fresh for a similar-yet-not-the-same fish taco, but then Chipotle forced Baja under, and now there is nothing.

R.I.P. best tri-tip nachos ever + oddly-but-surprisingly-good lime salted tortilla chips + Fish Taco mondays.

Hmm, Mexican food. When I came here, I had the tri tip burrito. The burrito is huge and fell apart pretty quickly, but it still tasted pretty good. Love the giant fish tank. Well lit, ample seating, friendly staff, close to campus! :P Not too expensive, either. I heard prices for certain items are cheaper on Mondays?

Mexican food is one of my favorites… But Taco Bell seems more authentic than this place. Some friends urged me to go here because they used to when they were at college at Cal Poly. But this place was not very good. I ordered a soup and fish taco combo-but didn’t eat the fish taco… It looked pretty yucky to me:( If I had to go there again I’d stick with a burrito, nachos or chimichanga. Since everyone else’s food seemed somewhat tasteful and normal. The service was pretty slow, and they oy had one girl working the front. We had to stand there and wait as we each ordered food then they brought it to our table. Prices were fairly cheap though and it looked like they had specials on Coronas!

MMMMMM Chile Relleno Burrito! MMMMM Sooooo good. I also enjoy their shrimp one. I love my burritos with lots of guac and sour cram and beans, etc.. These people put everything I want in it and they do it right — what a concept for making people come back again and again.

My faith in Cabo is renewed. The tri-tip they use is nicely marinated and juicy. My favorite dish so far is the quesadilla with tri-tip. It’s listed as an appetizer but it is hearty enough for a full meal.

i had a chicken taco and a steak taco. the chicken was a bit on the dry side, and the beans was too watery that it just dripped everywhere! chips are okay, but the salsa is good

Cabo San Luis blew every more authentic(*cough* Tio Alberto’s) Mexican place I tried in SLO out of the water. I didn’t eat here super-frequently, but usually when my partner came to the strip mall to get books and supplies for the new quarter we’d come eat here. It’s more Tex-Mex than Mexican and is probably the best example of tex-mex I’ve found anywhere. This is a delicious local restaurant, with any kind of fish tacos or burritos being wonderful. They’re probably some of the best burritos I’ve ever had, period. Good nachos and salsas, too! Service is also usually pretty prompt, and the interior feels rather cozy. A bit too expensive to eat here regularly, but for my once-in-awhile fish taco and burrito fix, this place was perfect.

My husband and I have eaten here just once since moving to SLO almost 4 years ago. The service was OK. Love the fish tank. But the taste just didn’t work for us. For some reason, I’m not really into Mexican food. But my husband really enjoys it, so I knew it wasn’t working for us when he felt disappointed too.(I love the Morro Bay Taco Temple fish taco, so it’s hard to find a fish taco that comes close to theirs.) I guess it’s just not our taste. I doubt that we’ll be back for a second try.

I was brought in by their dollar taco signs hanging outside. From 3 – 8 you can get yourself some fish tacos(up to three) for a dollar each. Also great was their drink specials on coronas. Love me some cheap meals anytime when traveling around.

I was in town and my friend who used to live in the area said this was the spot. I ordered the ‘CSL Combo with the chicken burrito(choice was either tri-trip or chicken) and a fish taco’. My friend told me they racked up the prices at this place. I thought it was pretty pricey too. I mean, a CSL Combo, a chicken quesadilla and two drinks for $ 23? I don’t know. I’m probably just used to my local burrito joints. My friend said a lot of college students used to come here, but with the economy now and this restaurant’s prices, it explains why they were so empty! When I got my food, the fish taco was good but when I took a huge bite into my burrito, it wasn’t chicken! Oh the betrayal… I would’ve went to the front and complained, but we were on a time schedule to head back home so I didn’t feel like being a pain in the ass this time. Maybe next time. If there’s a next time har har.

As everyone says here, the fish tacos are kick-arse. eat them.(too, since Splash upped all their prices, they are now the cheaper fish taco to get in SLO, so they’ve got that going for them too) That being said, when I come here, I always always get the Crunchy Cabo Chicken Salad(you might not have noticed it way on the other side of the menu from everything else=) Holy crap, that is so tasty. It’s a filling, meaty(but not too meaty) crunchy, fresh-tasting, bowl of awesome with a dressing unlike anything I’ve had on a salad from anywhere else. It just works. Food’s a little on the spendy side(like ten bucks a person or so including drinks), but if you come here, you’re gonna get a tex-mex kind of selection(think Chevy’s, but by the ocean, and way better.). A definite once-every-couple-of-weeks trip for me; I crave that salad on a warm day. mmm.

I went to Cabo a few years before this place opened and had a tasty, authentic fish taco from a street vendor(along with some delicious papaya with lime juice and chili powder!). Then I returned to the Central Coast with an endless craving for these tacos. I tried fish tacos any chance I could get at local restaurants, desperately hoping to find something that resembled their Cabo counterpart. Nothing came even close. That is until I heard about this place opening right off Foothill. I heard the fish tacos would be authentic… One day when I was heading to Kona’s for a sub, I decided to just go in and give this new place a try. I have to tell you, it was one of the most gratifying dining experiences I’ve ever had. That batter, the tortillas, sauce, cabbage… it brought me right back to Cabo! When I lived in SLO I ate there every few weeks for lunch. And now that I’ve moved away I still stop in at least once every time I come home. The tacos are as good as ever! I also recommend their Cabo taco(same fish taco but with guac), their Caborito, and their bowls with grilled chicken or steak. I’m sure anytihng you get there would be relatively fresh and tasty. The décor and atmosphere is casual and fun, and, as everyone else has noted, the fish tank is pretty cool. I definitely recommend everyone in the area try it at least once!

More like American-fusion style Mexican food – far from authentic, but tasty to say the least. Very clean establishment and fresh ingredients, just lacking in kick and original flavor from the menu selection. I feel like some of the items are overpriced, and their chips portions are at a minimal. Overall the food ‘aint all that bad, though. If you your looking something more authentic I suggest looking elsewhere, or heading closer to the boarder because you won’t get it here.

This is where I had my first fish taco and taught me what a fish taco should be. It’s a piece of battered cod deep fried and then place on a corn tortilla topped with some guac and lime juice. They also have the option to add some sour cream and cheese. It sounds simple, but is delicious. Since then I’ve had fish tacos in the Mission District of SF, Rosarito, and of course Cabo San Lucas. Although not the best that I’ve had, their fish taco is a good representation of a Cabo style fish taco. Everything else on the menu is fair, so put this in your back pocket as your fish taco spot.

This is one of those places that you have to try if you’re in SLO. It’s far from downtown, you’ll have to try to find it. If you go at lunch the line will be out the door. It’s a bright and colorful taqueria with a giant fish tank. My favorite: Chili Relleno Burrito. I give extra credit to restaurants that make vegetarian food that isn’t simple beans and rice. :)

Had an EH tasting fish taco here(no reference to anything else!) and haven’t gone back. Dining buddy had a huge burrito at a decent price. That fish tank was cool though, and everything else, vegetable-wise, seemed pretty fresh. Actually, I don’t think any place in San Luis Obispo has any excuse to not serve fresh food… they’re in the middle of agriculture and the ocean! Anyway. I’d go back, I just haven’t had a chance to. Also I lived on the other side of town by Madonna area so I stuck around there, or ventured to Morro Bay for Taco Temple or something else.

Reallly good Baja Fresh-esque restaurant. Their menu used to be almost identical to Baja Fresh, but they changed it up a year or two ago so that they weren’t such a blatant rip-off. Great Cal-Mex food with fresh ingredients. The location is clean and inviting.
