my wife and I just moved here and although this is a drive from where we live, I’m just thankful we found such a place. ‘the place’ used to be Fiesta, but here in San Jose, we became shell shocked after seeing the outrageous prices everywhere, and to boot, the lackluster variety; Safeway is the biggest example. I have no idea why Californians allow these places to stay in business, but I welcome a trip to a place where hass avocados aren’t a $ 1.50-$ 2, and Cilantro isn’t over a dollar! This place will get all my produce business and then some.

This place is cheap and a good stop off point for Willow Glen shoppers with a need to pick up something quick on the way home. I needed dried coriander to cook dinner, so my husband hopped out of the car on our way home while I entertained my toddler in the car. He quickly returned with dried coriander, a few yellow onions, fresh cilantro and green onions, and some salt for $ 5. Since we shop at Whole Foods regularly, I was shocked at how little it all cost.(However, let us not forget the quality. This place is cheap, but not great quality– my coriander was just OK.) He reported back that they have a new cheese and salsa bar at the front of the produce section, with foods sold in bulk(ie. salsa for $ 2 a lb, guac for $ 4 a lb.) Sounds intriguing!

I went to purchase baby formula for my child. I am not kidding for the same brand, the same ounces than the large grocery stores sell, this store sells it for$ 10.00 more! It may be because alot of the customer are in state programs that help help with the cost and do not notice the price. It’s sad. I will never shop here again.

I am older and no longer enjoy going to the large grocery stores… so I have been going to the MiRancho super market, about once every other week, which is on my way home from work. I have never noticed any bad smells or dirtiness. Instead, I am drawn to the absolutely gorgeous produce, friendly people, neato cheery music, small floor size, and small prices. The selection isn’t as vast as your typical mega/chain store, but it turns out I can live without all those selections, especially when I take home a couple bags full [enough for a whole week] at under 15 bucks. I suspect part of the low price is because the produce is locally grown, and that’s truly a good thing. This store is becoming a big favorite with me. :)

Mi Rancho is not hot on my list of markets, however it serves it’s purpose for us who live in Willow Glen. I don’t purchase most of my fruits here, but their veggie prices are unmatched. In my basket: Lemons: 3 for 1.00 Limes: 10 for 1.00 2 Garlic Heads: 0.37 Housemade Guac: @ 3.99lb Cilantro: .59 Mexican Green Onions: .79 Ground Cumin: .99 Ground Pepper: .99 Baby Watermelon: 2.50 Cheap!

okay, so it’s taco night at the jacobs’ house and i had picked up everything i needed at the money sucking monolith«whole foods» that i am forced to shop at because san jose has shit for grocery stores. well, everything EXCEPT corn tortillas. how am i gonna make some serious old school tacos in $ 9.00 «sprouted organic corn tortillas –with added flax seed»?? um, i think i would be shot dead by every mexican i know as authentic tortillas are freaking sacred. in fact i think the priest down at sacred heart church on willow street offers slices of those bad boys in lieu of communion host. so this is when i remembered mi rancho! mi rancho is tiny, kind of smelly and has mostly pretty terrible produce. but, they did have the same avocados that whole foods has for half the price and i was able to find some decent looking onions as i forgot those as well! the workers are incredibly friendly, there is plenty of parking AND the have pan dulce which i’m afraid is a necessity when you are shopping at a mexican market. can i tell you the best part? i did some random shopping after the tortillas and walked out of there with a full grocery bag, and do you know what my total was? $ 7.41 take that alan greenspan!

If you’re on a tight budget, this is the place you want to buy your meat and vegetables. Sometimes when I buy every single vegetable I can think of plus meat, I feel like I’m stealing from them, as I leave only paying 10 bucks. I would go ahead and give the four stars, but one time I saw a mouse scurrying out of the corner of my eye. But I wasn’t that disgusted because I have a friend in pest control who has told lots of stories about Safeway.

I mainly go here to purchase beer, so this review will be worthless to true shoppers. It seems to have good prices and the people are nice enough. When I recently bought a tall can, I expected to get the standard brown bag so that I could walk down the street with it, instead it came in a plastic bag, which seemed strange.
