Not being familiar with Honduran cuisine, I relied on the staff’s expertise. They did not disappoint with their suggestions. Excuse my ignorance, since I did not ask the name of the dish. Duh! Since your mouth will be watering after this review, just point to the pictures and they’ll make it happen. Started with jumbo prawns stuffed with jalapeños, wrapped in bacon. Yes, you read that right. MIND. BLOWN. My husband and I arm wrestled for the last bite. Apparently, my Insanity work out paid off. The two entrées included a crispy chicken drizzled in a fabulous salsa, over fried plantains. Yaaaaas!!! The chicken was cooked to perfection. Crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside. The second entrée was a platter of cheese enchiladas with the most DE-LICIOUS molé sauce I have ever had. Sorry Grandma. A must are the home made flour tortillas. So authentic it’ll make you want to kick Taco Bell in the teeth. They also have a secret sauce that once hearing they will be coming soon to a grocery store near you, I sheepishly returned the bottle from my purse. From the feel of a Central American restaurant, the generous hospitality and authentic cuisine this is a culinary experience once must have. Buen Provecho!

Ordered takeout via Door Dash. Chicken Soup, two pork tamales, and Barbacoa de res. When the food was delivered, there were no tamales, yet Maya’s had happily charged me for them. I ended up sharing my son’s meal, he is 16 years old and had just returned from football practice. Guess who ended up having to go out for food after all, even after paying premium prices to have it conveniently delivered? I’m pretty sure neither Maya’s nor door dash would have bothered refunding my money, had I not asked. Completely bogus! Why bother paying for delivery if everything you ordered doesn’t get delivered?

I was driving by and was desperate for some good food. Saw this place and did a quick Unilocal search fire reviews. The reviews are dead on, I concur. The portions are a bit lacking IMO but you won’t be starving afterwards. You just won’t be taking any leftovers home. The food is delicious, service is great and atmosphere is ok, feels like family taking care of family. Décor isn’t exactly taj mahal, but the food was so good my 5 stars didn’t care about the décor. Not pricey. Ill go back here gladly

This is my new favorite Latin restaurant in the South Bay. The restaurant is clean, the service is very friendly, and the menu items I have tried so far have just been wonderful. On my first visit we ordered the Pollo Frito(Fried Chicken) and the Camerones Aztecas(Stuffed Shrimp). The fried chicken was served on a bed of lettuce and plantain bananas. This was simply delicious. The stuffed shrimp was wrapped in bacon and jalapeño in the center. Again, amazing. The rice and beans that was served was some of the best anywhere. With this dish you are also offered corn or flour tortillas. I’m partial to flour tortillas and these homemade tortillas gave me a one-way ticket to carb heaven with no chance of turning back — they are that good! On our next visit we had the Chicken Mole with rice and beans, and Carne Molida con Tajadas — ground beef with tomato sauce served on a bed of plantains. The Chicken Mole is not only something to write home about, but even apologize to your mother for. Try it, you will not be disappointed. The Carne Molida may sound odd, but trust me when I say that it works, call it Central American Soul Food. There are so many items I want to try on the menu. The server was so nice she saw my eyes light up as she walked by with another table’s dishes, so she stopped to explain to me what they were. I look forward to trying the pork chop on my next visit. This place makes me feel like I’ve been invited into someone’s home.

Maya’s Café is simply outstanding. The Barbacoa, Fried Chicken, and Sopa de Res are my favorites. It’s like having a Honduran abuelita who’s an amazing cook. The owner and staff are the warmest, most hospitable people you’ll ever meet. Maya’s is truly a gem.

Long wait for the food, but it was worth it. The flour tortillas are the best I’ve ever had. Steak fajitas were great. Pricey though for Latin food. 2 entrees for $ 32(includes 18% tip)

The best soup I have ever had in a restaurant! Very genuine employees and food. Every dish I’ve tried is delicious, but I cant stop ordering the chicken soup because it is so delicious. Homemade flour and corn tortillas melt in your mouth! The best restaurant I have been to in San Jose!

Chuleta Sampedrana! Great Honduran spot. The porkchop plate is proper. Smothered with sauced onions, served with plantains, beans, and rice. Perfect amount of food. Been here with the tiny one twice. The waitress was super sweet and brought a little bowl of beans and rice for him, no charge. That and a few bites of plantains and he’s happy. Dad gets a beer and dad’s happy. Solid.

I came here because of the overwhelming amount of great reviews. Unfortunately, I can’t say I agree. I found the service to be wonderful, which is why I gave an additional star. However, the food was not appetizing whatsoever. I’m not a picky eater but I ordered the Carne Asada plate. The meat was rough, hard to chew, and not very flavorful. The beans and rice were pretty bland. I’ve definitely had better. The salsa was mildly spicy. At least the corn tortillas were good. Pros: tortillas and customer service Cons: food

This place is the bomb!!! My favorite Mexican style restaurant in the area for sure. I say Mexican style because it is not really Mexican, but more of Honduras/El Salvadorian cuisine. It’s definitely a hole in the wall but it’s clean and the food is delicious and the staff are personable. I ordered the Barbacoa and it is melt in your mouth good. The plates comes with refried pinto beans, Spanish rice, and home made flour or corn tortillas. I went with flour and it was fresh hot and soooo tasty. There are some standard Mexican offerings as well as some traditional offerings on the menu like the Barbacoa. I like that they have offerings for the sedate, but have offerings that shows their roots. Next time I am looking forward to try the coconut curry seafood soup. fried chicken, pupusas. I was very surprised to see coconut item on the menu as I don’t typically associate Central American food with coconut ingredients. This place is really a real find. Thanks again Unilocalers for another excellent recommendation.

Unilocaled a place with a friend to look for something different and exotic, and stumbled upon this place because it was highly rated and we’ve never had Honduran food before. The atmosphere feels like a hole-in-a-wall restaurant. The server was really patient with accommodating dietary restrictions(gluten free and dairy free for me). We did wait for 20 – 30 minutes for our dishes, but they offer fresh chips to keep us satisfied! Alright — the important part — the food! 1. Seafood stew in coconut milk(sopa de mariscos) — reminded me of a less creamy version of clam chowder with a slight tinge of coconut. If you love clam chowder you’ll love this dish! — the server said this is one of their most popular and authentic dishes 2. Barbacoa plate with corn tortilla — barbacoa was on the dryer side — I really liked the rice — it had just the right amount of moisture and every bite was very flavorful — like a lot of really good Spanish rice I’ve had in the past — corn tortilla was incredibly fresh and felt like it just got out of the oven 3. Shrimp wrapped in bacon(aztecas a la carte) — this was my favorite dish — super interesting presentation the shrimp was cooked just right with just the right amount of chewiness and you can’t go wrong with bacon! The sauce was a mustardy citrusy mix that was incredibly flavorful. And I don’t even like mustard. Overall very good experience and recommend it to anyone who has never tried Honduras food!

Just got into San Jose and needed a lunch spot to hit up… ended up here and did not regret it one bit. I got a fried chicken dish and it was definitely better than I expected. They got a really nice crunch on the chicken– it was delish. It came with rice, beans, and coleslaw. They also brought out some sauces for you to dip this in and I was really happy with what I got. Loads of flavor in every bite! Service was friendly and helpful. Server helped us out considering we don’t have this cuisine too often and I was happy with her recommendation. Check it out!

Honduras food is different from the usual mexican food i’m use to. Servers were really nice despite it being 10min to closing. Bf got tilapia plate(off menu i think) and i got the carne asada. 1. Carne asada: rice, dry shredded cabbage, fried plantains and thin steak. Plantains were soft inside, but not fried enough. Like eating thick fries. Steak was good, but i’m not a steak person. Rice didn’t stick together, but loved the way it was cooked. refried beans no comment. 2. Tilapia: lightly seasoned, everything else the same. Side veggies mainly grilled onions, bellpeppers and potato not flavored. 3 sheets of homemade tortilla… maiz for me & flour for bf. A bit thick, but nbd. I would’ve given 4, but the waitress never informed us before hand about the extra charge for more tortilla when we asked for more. Really? Good thing we only gave 10% tip.

Went for lunch, and was blown away by the service and quality of the food. Absolutely amazing, try the pork/bean/cheese papusas, and loved the Honduran Tacos(chicken taquitos) that came smothered in love, with egg on top. The must have is the bacon wrapped shrimp with spicy fresh jalepeno inside. LOVEDIT! Will be back for sure. Oh and they rocked some good music…

QUESADILLA to die for!!! Y’all make me want to go to Honduras and see what other secrets yer hiding! It came with a citrus sauce that made the day brighter I swear. My friend was pleased with the seafood soup. The waiter was really nice to us rookies and took good care of us. I of course asked them to put mole on shrimp for me. They give me a funny look and say sure just for you. I don’t eat meat but I love mole. They also recommended Tamarindo for my drink and it was refreshing. Their homemade Flour Tortillas are the real home run. I am actually coming back here because of the Tortillas and the Quesadilla. Hands down best I’ve had. 5 stars

4.5 stars! My friends brought me here to try typical Honduran food. And it was delicioso!!! It’s a hole in the wall type of place and they’ve got posters of Honduran places of interest and soccer memorabilia on the walls. There’s lots of order from on the menu — they’ve got your usual Latin American fare like tacos and such, but being at a Honduran place, I wanted to try Honduran food! I ordered the desayuno tipico hondureño — the Honduran breakfast. It comes with eggs made to order, frijoles/beans, queso freso(cheese), crema(sour cream), avocado, and platanos fritos(fried plantains). It was SUPERDELICIOUS! Everything tasted so yummy. You can get it without meat or get it with meat, which is your choice of carne asada or the chuleta(pork chop). I asked our server which one she preferred and she recommended the carne asada. It also comes with your choice of flour or corn tortillas. I was so stuffed from my breakfast plate. I think it would have been enough food without the meat. But the carne asada had a great flavor to it. The meat was a a tad tough, but still tasted great. We also order the baleada super and a pupusa with frijoles. A baleada I think is like a Honduran tortilla that’s a little thicker and slightly more fluffy. It comes folded in half and has fillings inside. With the baleada super, it came with frijoles, avocado, and scrambled eggs! This was also really delicious! Next time I’m going to get my own! The pupusa was tasty and came with salsa and curtido. Really tasty food and great service. I’m totally coming to back to get the breakfast plate again and a baleada super, and to try some of the other stuff on the menu too!

I was going to be in the area for an event and I knew that I would be hungry after so i searched and found this place on Unilocal. I was intrigued that it’s a honduran restaurant as I never had Honduran food and I decided to check it out. We ordered a plate of what people said the Honduran spaghetti which is a plate full of deep fried plantains, some chopped cabbage smothered with ground beef cooked in tomato sauce. We also ordered honduran menudo… it’s just like mexican menudo which is a big bowl of hearty beef tripes soup bit the honduran uses coconut milk in the soup and the soup has some plantains, cabbage and carrots. Last but not least we also shared the honduran chicken tamales. It’s very similar to el Salvadorian tamales, it’s wrapped in banana leaves n the masa is smoother than the Mexican style. I have to investigate but I had a feeling that the honduran style uses coconut milk as the masa had rich flavor. They gave us a basket of free chips n salsa while we waited for our food to arrive. The salsa was delicious, probably one of the best I have had! The food took a while, probably around 20 minutes after we placed our order but when the food got to our table they were steaming hot, they were also huge in portion and most importantly all were very delicious! !!! I will certainly come back to try different things! Their seafood soup seemed to be the customers’ favorite. The male server was very friendly but the ladies didn’t smile much and could have been friendlier and more attentive. But overall, we had a good experience dining here.

I came here for dinner with my best friend super excited to try some Honduran food! The customer service was excellent!!! The waitress made sure we knew what we were ordering and that we would like it. For example, my friend was going to order the Honduran enchiladas, and she explained how they were different from the traditional enchiladas(good thing, because she ended up going with the traditional). I ordered Pupusas with cheese and with checheronies(pork). Upon waiting for your entrée they give you complimentary chips and salsa. They salsa was perfect, not too hot, not too mild. Our order took a little bit longer to come out than I had anticipated, that is the only reason they do not have 5 stars. The meal itself was delicious and savory! The pupusas were just right and I had a taste of my friends enchiladas which were also yummy. The green sauce was really really good, you should definitely try it. Maya’s was great, I will be back again!!!
