I purchased a groupon deal for my friend and I as she and I love J. Lohr’s rose. The groupon only allows you to come on Friday after hours and a reservation is required. It was a quaint and intimate set up of tables and chairs with candles and even a guy playing live music. We were given the rose and 3 glasses of red, along with a really nice cheese and fruit plate. For the groupon, I wouldn’t have expected each person to get such a hefty cheese plate. We learned that this is the normal wine tasting which is $ 15/person, which is really reasonable. The employee was really nice and explained all the wines and cheeses very thoroughly. Although we didn’t get the same notes he explained, we enjoyed them, even though my friend and I are not typically red wine drinkers. We also indulged in a glass of their sauvignon blanc which was really tasty too. Overall, a really great experience and I will be back for a tasting or for a bottle of their rose!

Have been twice now and both great experiences. First time dropped in for wine tasting. 6 pours with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Did mention it’s free? Lots of tasty options to try and a range of prices on bottles to take home. No pressure to buy, but we brought home a yummy Reisling(try it before you judge) for $ 10. Last weekend redeemed our livingsocial deal for wine and chocolate. While not free still a good experience. The tasting room was packed but we were ushered to the back were just one other party enjoyed their pairing. Seriously good chocolate, a fantastic guide, and a range of wine to try.

Amazing winery. I’ve been to their complementary tastings three times, and each time has been a great experience! They give you six tastings and order them accordingly. Their wines are high quality and they have a wide variety to choose from. The staff is very friendly and personable. I’ve always enjoyed my conversations with the staff as much as I’ve enjoyed the wines. This past trip our wine master, Arlene, even gave us an extra tasting so that we could compare two of their Pinot noirs. She was super fun and even took some pictures for us! All in all, I’m very satisfied with J. Lohr and would recommend it to anyone who’s in the area and looking for a fun way to pass the time.

The tasting flights are free which is why this gets two stars; however, the wine is not very good. I have had much better wine that is less expensive.

This wine tasting room has yummy wines and is very cute. The first time I came here I had a pleasant experience. I also went a second time and our server was Ana. She was very nice and knowledgable. They offer complimentary wine tastings in which you get to choose 6 wines. You can also try 3 cuvee wines for $ 5. I really like their ST E. cuvee, RVG, Grenache Rose, and more! I will definitely come back to purchase and taste some more of their tasty wines! Only reason why I didn’t give this a 5 is because I wish there was an area to sit and enjoy a bottle!

J. Lohr was recommended by one of my bridesmaids. Her dad has had a lot of the wines from this place, and is very pleased with them. So! I checked it out! I worked with Ryan, and met Mary when I went to pick up the wine cases. Everyone here was so nice! And, we could’ve had as many complimentary tastings of the various wines as we wanted! :) I ended up purchasing 2 cases of Cypress Chardonnay and 2 cases of Cypress Cabernet Sauvignon — both were tasty and perfect as our house white and red wines for our wedding! I also recommend the Estate Sauvignon Blanc — it was refreshing. So, if you like wine, and if you’re ever in San Jose, stop in! You can’t beat free parking, free tasting, and good prices if you decide to buy.

This place is not in downtown San Jose as it is listed, so it’s slightly misleading. Nonetheless, the wines are actually pretty good but are more on the dry side. The good thing is that the tasting is free, 6 wines in total. The four I enjoyed the most(mind you I do not like dry wines) was the Bay Mist, which is a Riesling, not dry and definitely not sugary. The second one was the Viognier, the third one was the Highlands Bench Pinot Noir and the last one was the Gesture Rose. The prices of the bottles for non-members ranged from $ 10 to $ 40. The other nice part was the free breadsticks. The one downside of the experience, which is why it got 4 instead of 5 stars, is the fact that the person pouring did not explain anything about the wines or the winery. My friend and I had to ask questions, which Dana answered but would have preferred for her to explain, especially since it was our first time. Also, the counters were very high making me look shorter than what I really am. Either way, if I find myself back in SJ I would stop in again.

I was driving by so I figured I’d stop in here. They are dog friendly which is REALLY cool. The wine tasting is also free so you can’t beat that. You get to pick 6 wines that you’d like to taste. My only complaint is the person pouring didn’t explain the wines to me. I’m not sure if she just didn’t take me seriously because I in work out clothes from camping all weekend or what — but definitely lost points there.

One of the smaller places I’ve been to, but still a good experience! Very friendly staff, wasn’t very crowded at all for a Sunday afternoon. Each of the wines were so delicious, can’t really go with any of them I think! We all loved the Sauvignon Blanc, and I bought the Rose. Only thing I would ask for is some bar stools, we were surprised there wasn’t a place to sit down. We intended on making this the main place for our day outing, but ended up having to find another place to sit and relax. Otherwise, free/available parking, free/yummy tastings, and a great staff!

We came for a with a group of 8 for a friend’s bday and got very generous pours of each wine. I became a wine club member here; the wines are delicious… ENOUGHSAID! We had 6 to taste, i ended up buying the Sauvignon Blanc, merlot, and the Cab. The tasting was in a room off to the side of the bar; unfortunately, there weren’t any bar stools or chairs and table to make the experience more relaxing. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this tasting room!

Free tastings, easy parking, free tastings, friendly and knowledgeable staff, free tastings, complimentary breadsticks, free tastings, discounts on cases, free tastings, cute intimate space. And free tastings. Thanks to the awesome service and an especially delicious Syrah, I became a fan of J. Lohr. My boyfriend planned on getting a case but ended up a club member instead. Kudos to this team here for a fun afternoon. What a hidden gem in Downtown SJ.

4.5 stars FREE wine tasting. Like David Bruce in Los Gatos, and a few other places(notably Heitz in Napa) this place does not charge for tasting. You get to choose 6 different wines to taste, as well as a special Bordeaux Blend on the weekends. We came on Thanksgiving weekend and it was nice and quiet. I have always seen J. Lohr wines at Safeway, etc for around $ 10 but they actually have a lot of nice estate wines, and specials wines you can only purchase at the winery. Their 40th anniversary wines, and their Bordeaux Blends were fantastic, and reasonably priced. What I also like is that their wine club gives you 30% off. I will definitely bring some friends here, and consider joining the club.

What a wonderful tasting room in the middle of San Jose. My grandpa lives across the street, and I’ve always wondered about the cute ivy-covered brick building across the way. When I found myself without a lunch date(because my grandpa went to napa, ironically), my besties and I decided to come here and do a proper wine tasting. As we wandered in, we were greeted right away. There were people but it was not crowded or too busy, which was lovely. Our wine expert was Richard I believe, who was very welcoming and engaging. He shared with us as much as we wanted to know, but also was very kind in letting us catch up as we sipped our wines. You get to pick 6 free wine pours for the complimentary tasting, which is awesome! There’s a nice selection of their specialty wines, reds, whites, blends, and dessert wines. Rather than picking my own, I told Richard that I loved dry wines, medium body, not too fruit forward. He picked each one in a perfect cadence, and really helped me enjoy each. He recognized(better than I articulated) that I liked wines with structure, that didn’t surprise me with random flavors out of nowhere. So true! Never thought about it that way. I loved each wine he chose for me, and ended up going home with 5 bottles. Whoops! If you buy 6 bottles, you get 10% off. They are nice enough to let you combine your purchases with other people in your party to get up to the 6 bottles, and each person can pay for their own bottles but still get the 10% off. If you get 10 or 12 bottles(I forget), you get 15% off everything. Bottles were between $ 15 – 40 max, with most being around $ 25 – 30. Loved my experience and would recommend it if you have a bit of time in San Jose and would like to chill out and drink some nice wines.

Had a great experience here bringing my cousin and aunt! It was my first time at J. Lohr and their first time wine tasting! Upon arrival the staff were very friendly and immediately engaged in conversation with us. Our wine expert was Michael. He was an older gentleman who seemed like he had been there awhile. He was so helpful with all the questions my family had! When we started the tasting I asked him to explain to them about how to «taste» the wine. He was great! All the wines we tasted–(which were six of last years harvest) were excellent. My favorite being the Reisling. Their 40th anniversary red is excellent also. I loved that they stick to the old fashioned way of not charging for a tasting. You come in and can have 6 sips of some of the best wine they have! Definitely coming back and bringing the hubby! Thanks Michael for making it a memorable experience for my family and I!

Came across this local winery after checking Unilocal. What impressed me the most is their tasty wine, wonderful staff(Jenny is awesome), and reasonable prices on their bottles of wine. They offer free wine tasting(free is extra tasty) and are open everyday. Will definitely keep coming back!(:

It was our first wine tasting experience, and it couldn’t possibly have gone better. Jenny was so so so patient and knowledgeable, not to mention funny! She took her time and showed us a whole variety of wines(some that I’ve never even heard of) and gave such great detail for each bottle. We went in not knowing anything about wine, and left with a more open palette. Even got ourselves a couple of bottles(which we can’t wait to try with Jenny’s recommended pairings) AND tickets to come try the chocolate and wine pairing next week! Thanks so much for your kindness and great energy Jenny! Can’t wait to come back! #UpAndComingWinos
