Seconding the other, the salad ingredients are good, but the system is very flawed. You start with some greens for either 3.50 or 4.50 and add in the good stuff for between 0.75 and 1.50 after youve created a nice size salad, you have to whip out a nice sized wad to cash. I say go to Foccacia around the corner for a cheaper, maybe even better, salad.

UPDATE: CLOSED ************************************************* The lunchtime crowd still lines up along the food court in Embarcadero 4 to make their own salads at this small salad place. There’s no seating, and only enough room to handle a single file line and two salad makers at a time. Hand over a small or large bowl to the man behind the counter, and then tell him which toppings to add. The toppings come in three prices, with chicken being more expensive than bacon bits which cost more than celery. At 75 cents to $ 1.50 a topping, you can easily have a $ 10 salad if you’re not paying attention. The toppings, especially the cucumber, don’t always look great, but you can tell yourself you’re eating well. There’s free croutons and bread, so you can really pretend you’re eating well with a bunch of bread, bacon, and ranch dressing on your salad. They put two scoops of bacon bits in your salad. That’s too much; this isn’t raisin bran. Like most other places, they offer a card where you get the tenth salad free, but there’s only one topping free in each category, so even the free salad isn’t free. This place also sells sandwiches and hot dogs, but they seem to be losing a lot of business to new restaurant Foccacia down the street.(in fact, they’ve lost so much business that they’ve closed.)

«I am really surprised that this is the only place in the Financial district that mixes the salad for you after you pick your toppings. I have been wanting to try it forever! Well now that I am eating my $ 10.00 SaladI can safely say I will never go back. I was not informed that it is $.75−1.00 for additinal toppings. The crutons are free, but they are not even home made??? If you are going to specialize in salads and charge ten dollars it better be the best thing ever. Honestly I make better salads myself.»

Handy for grabbing a salad on-the-go if you’re looking to spend time in the sun at Justin Herman Plaza. Not overly delicious and be careful about adding mix ins. When I wanted bacon bits added to my salad, I dodn’t expect darn near ¼ cup of them. It made the salad overly salty and at $ 9.50, not a bargain.

It’s a pretty standard«make-your-own-salad» place, but it stands out as being the only one I know about in the immediate area. Pick a bowl of greens, hand it to the«chef» and select the veggies, etc. to add. They mix it up(«toss-it») and put it back in your bowl. Not to complicated. Adding items at $.75 each and up, does add-up after a while, and what looks like a small bowl of greens quickly becomes a stuffed bowl of greens & veggies. That’s a good thing. On a nice sunny day, the huge open area on the bay side of the Embarcadero center makes for a great lunch spot. That’s a really good thing.
