This is is where my wife and I had our first date, and obviously THAT turned out well, so while correlation is not causation, Stinking Rose gets an extra, stinky star for the correlation! In fairness, I’ve now come several more times and they’ve been consistently wonderful every time. It’s a little kitchy and a little spendy, but it’s also a lot tasty and a lot of fun, so I consider it totally worth it. Bonus: This year they participated in the Restaurant Week promotion!

I would rate this restaurant two stars. The bread that was served was cold and a bit stale. We ordered the garlic meatballs as a appetizer, it was ok but nothing special and over priced. The Neon Ravioli I ordered was lacking flavor and portion size. To enhance the flavor I had to dress it with salt, pepper and the garlic aioli that came with the bread. I expected to be somewhat full for a $ 24 dish. But it had about 10 raviolis, I should have expected that. I won’t be coming back.

It’s a cute name and fun, quirky décor so I expected more from this place. Of course, there is garlic in just about everything on the menu. I wanted to love the food, but found it to be mediocre and real hit or miss. The mashed potatoes and spinach were very blah, but short ribs were tasty. The service was a bit slow and we had to ask for our plates to be cleared. Don’t think I would return since so many great restaurants to choose from in San Francisco and feel like it is probably a tourist trap.

It is an experience. I consider myself a garlic fan so I was not afraid of anything. It is Restaurant Week here in San Francisco, so they had very good three courses deals. I started with the bagna calda, which went really well with the focaccia bread. However, I felt the need to put salt in the oil. Then I had a side salad, and I used somenof the bagna calda as dressing. My main entry was the neon ravioli, even though the waiter advise me against it. It was ok but again I used a little bit more of the bagna calda and salt and it made it way better! For dessert I had tiramisu(which was okay) and then I had the garlic ice cream(huge!) And that was the highlight! Waiters were very attentive and the portions are rather small for an Italian restaurant. Glad I went, it was a nice experience!

Ambiance: I know this place is touristy, but I like it. I’ve been here a few times before and always enjoy myself. It’s pretty big, which is rare in the city, so it’s not as hard to get a table. If you have a party of 4 or less, ask to be sat in the area to the right where the tables have their own individual curtains. It feels more private and fun. Service: This was the first time I didn’t enjoy the service. The restaurant wasn’t busy at all yet our server seemed extremely rushed. He barely made eye contact and placed our food down so fast, you could barely ask for what you needed(perhaps this was his intent?). Then he was gone for so long that we had to hunt someone down for the check. Eventually we paid with a gift card and all that was inside was a receipt that listed the balance on the card, not the difference left. He never said a thing to us before leaving. The bus boy though, was extremely attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Food: The food is a bit pricey but it was good. We had the prime rib which was delicious. The creamed spinach and potatoes that came with it were really yummy. We also ordered the garlic fettuccine which could have used more salt, garlic, and more flavor in general. I’d skip that in the future.

I wonder if one day they will add a warning for anyone on warfarin since garlic is an anticoagulant… but then again this is SF so I’m sure people sporadically consume huge plates of kale salad which would provide adequate vitamin K for clotting. Anyways, I digress. Let me get to the actual review before I scare/confuse everyone with anticoag stuff :3 The décor similar to that of Buca and other unpretentious Italian restaurants – gregarious and welcoming, amply decorated with garlic themed paraphernalia. They boast the longest garlic braid in the world which stretches around the restaurant ceiling. In the waiting area, they even have a mini gift shop featuring garlic sauces and apparel.(Being an anti-Apple rebel, I was most amused by the iStink shirt.) (++) Complimentary bread and garlic pesto: Nice and intensely garlicky. Goes great with the complimentary rolls, but the olive oil base makes it quite filling. (+++) Bagna calda: A dish of garlic cloves stewed to soft, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Not too pungent and edible on its own or with the bread. The dish is quite big; definitely sharable among four people. It’s tempting to eat all the bread with these garlic toppings(not sure if I’d be able to go back to traditional not-so-garlicky garlic bread after this) and it’s a fairly long wait for the food(the chicken takes at least 20 minutes). However the bread really fills you up – be sure to save stomach space for the actual entrees! (-) Salad: Lackluster, I was unimpressed with the composition of lettuce and one cherry tomato, and I found the(garlic?) dressing too heavy. (+++) 40 clove garlic chicken: The garlic blends very well with the chicken, and I believe the 40 clove claim as the garlic tastes infused. The chicken is also crusted with black pepper and herbs, so you still get the aromatic complexity of rotisserie chicken. (++) BBQ baby back ribs: I didn’t expect BBQ to be good here, but it was better than ribs I’ve had at a lot of places. Not too garlicky to go along with the restaurant theme, but the ribs were tender and flavorful. (+++) Lamb shank: Tastes slow-cooked, falls off the bone, and garlic and gamy turned out to go well together. (++) Garlic mashed potatoes(comes with entrees): Thick, medium creamy skins mixed in, with a strong but not overdone amount of garlic. (+) Neon ravioli: Looked pretty being multi-colored, but nothing too special about the ravioli itself. (+++) Garlic ice cream: Surprisingly very tasty! I liked how it wasn’t too sweet, and garlic in creamy dessert form turned out far better than I had expected. You don’t have be a garlic fanatic to appreciate this. Caution that it comes in a ginormous scoop though – it’s probably the size of a grapefruit. We shared among 12 people and were unable to finish it. (+/-) Tiramisu: Not bad, but I would have liked stronger coffee and alcohol.(FYI this is not garlic… not sure how I would feel about that) (-) Chocolate mousse cake: Too sweet and not chocolately enough in my opinion. We came in a large group, which is why I was able to sample so many different things! We also celebrated a birthday, and they brought candles, cake, and this cute garlic hat(though they had to promptly take back the hat because another party also had a birthday) They did a good job accommodating all of us; the only downside is that it was a bit cramped because the tables are not that big, and the artistically elongated oval plates make it even more difficult to fit everything on the table. Prices are a little high, coming out to around $ 35 per person, even with the SF restaurant week special. Things add up significantly after tax, tip, and the extra SF tax –_-;; I guess every rose has thorns… but for at least a one-time experience, I think it’s definitely worth the price as well as the garlic breath afterwards.

Lucky me I live in SF, I’m not a tourist, this place is so much fun with tons of cool booths in the back. The garlic is everywhere and everything on the menu is good. Grab some garlic in a tub, chicken and a whiskey Sour. You’ll have a good time here. North Beach is changing but luckily this spot is still here for the tourists and locals. You gotta come here at least once also pick up some hot sauce, BBQ sauce and some garlic pistachios to go!

If I needed to break up with a vampire, this’d be the perfect place to do it cause you know. Garlic in everything! After reading the reviews, I figured a night at the Stinking Rose would be a night of mediocre food, decent service, and a ton of tourists. All my assumptions were wrong! Let me set the scene: My friend, who’s probably one of the worst planners ever. At least top 5 worst in all of history, tried planning her own birthday /going away party. Long story short, we ended up at Stinking Rose because it’s one of the few places that could accept a large group reservation. Service: Awesome! First off, my friend set a reservation for 15 people when ~20 people showed up, like a pro. Luckily, the waitress was able to call an option play and hot routed us to a private room in the back of the restaurant that was available. Additionally, our group of ~20 felt like it was waited on like a regular group of 4 – 6 because of their attentiveness. Food: We went family style on the joint and ordered up [2 of those garlic and olive oil things, 4 pizzas, 4 pastas, 2 baked shrimp and mussel plates, and braised spare ribs]. Nothing really stood out to me too much other than the shrimp and mussels because they were sitting right in front of me the whole night. I thought the food prices were a little high for the quality but between being located in a touristy area and establishing a garlic niche business both cost something. The best part about Stinking Rose is that they don’t have a corkage fee! That means bring as much booze as you can drink and have a good time! If you don’t or forget, they have a full bar and a decent wine list. Stinking Rose is good but I’m not sure if I would visit again on my own. I would definitely stop in if guests visit the city though.

I read the mediocre reviews about this place, but I knew I had to try it regardless. I mean, maybe those other Unilocalers were just not into garlic as much as I am. Ugh, I want this place to be good. I love the idea of ingredient-centered restaurants, especially with a flavor as powerful as garlic. Unfortunately, I couldn’t help liken this restaurant to an over-priced Buca di beppo(the thought of a chain restaurant in SF? *gasp*) Anyway, we got the neon ravioli and garlic clove chicken. I’m not sure how the chicken was the specialty of the restaurant. To me, it was pretty bland and I was confused by the 30 pieces of garlic cloves that were sitting right next to the chicken rather than being used to better flavor the chicken. The neon ravioli was fine, after I doused it with tabasco sauce and individual garlic cloves from the chicken.(the garlic did come in handy!). I did, however, have to deal with the consequences 3 Listerine mouthwashes later. We ended dinner with the garlic ice cream sundae, which I’m so glad I insisted on despite my companion’s terrified look. It was different, unambiguously garlic in flavor, and not overdone. The caramel and chocolate toppings went surprisingly well with the garlicky ice cream to create a delicious savory-sweet taste. I hope that all the dishes here can one day reach this level. The reason why date night at The Stinking Rose wasn’t a total failure was the wonderful ambience of the restaurant. This restaurant is huge, and I loved the intimate booth settings in the back! The romantic setting made up for my post garlic-snacking breath — or at least I think it did.

I think my hopes were a little too high when we came here for dinner. I’ve had friends who had been talking about this place for many years, and have now agreed it is not the same as it once was. The décor is very fun and a lot going on. This place is very touristy and therefor, they gouge the prices up quite a bit. The food was good(we love garlic), but I don’t think it is worth the price. That being said, we still really enjoyed our meal. We ordered the Garlic Soaking in a Hot Tub for an appetizer from all the recommendations. The garlic was cooked perfectly that it really did spread on the bread like butter. For entrees we got the Italian Garlic Meatloaf with pan gravy and Rabbit roasted with olives & an extra virgin olive oil garlic tomato sauce. Food was good, but underwhelming. There are so many great restaurants to choose from in San Francisco. I’m glad we came but I don’t know that we will be back.

Such a cool place. Incredibly fun, great service, and awesome ambience. A little pricey, but it’s all part of the experience. For someone who loves garlic, this place really nailed it. I loved the bread and the garlic spread that’s at the table to give it the extra garlic touch. My mom and I went and we got the spinach fondue appetizer which was so cheesy and good. We also shared the cioppino which was so flavorful and full of seafood. We also got a side of garlic veggies which were delicious. If it wasn’t in San Francisco I’d be coming here every weekend!

Stinking Rose… Why you no be closer!!! One of my new fave restaurants! Here’s the skinny: ONIONBREAD: Fits all the criteria of a perfect dinner roll. Soft, warm, and addicting. Could eat this all day long. Was surprised they didn’t just serve garlic bread, but after each garlicky dish came out, I very much appreciated the decision on the onion. BAGNACALDA: Soft whole pieces of garlic roasted in olive oil and butter. Perfect spread to accompany the onion bread. Add some extra bits of raw garlic and dip it in the garlic olive oil set out on every table, you’re on your way to Garlic Heaven! SHELLFISHPASTA: Tomato based pasta with a noticeable kick to it. Noodles were cooked to a perfect al dente that kept well until the next day for leftovers! Very generous seafood covering the entire bed of pasta. Can’t wait to get this one again!!! GARLICROASTEDPRIMERIB: A nice rare prime rib, just the way we ordered it. Couldn’t taste too much garlic here, but maybe it was overshadowed by all the strong garlic overtones from the other dishes. Tasted like any well cooked standard prime rib at any establishment. The creamed spinach and mashed potato however were nothing like we’ve ever had at any steakhouse, and very much so for the better! GILROY’S FAMOUSGARLICICECREAM: Garlic ice cream covered in a caramel sauce. The garlic was very subtle here and came in as more of an after taste. Not bad, but nothing amazing either, until… DOUBLEESPRESSO: We took a couple sips of this before deciding to make an Affogato with the garlic ice cream. BEST. IDEA. EVER. Give it a try!!! The only thing that would make this place 5 stars was if the prices came down a bit. Other than that, AMAZING!

They were open on Christmas Day. OPEN! * Do you know how hard it was to find a restaurant that’s open, that’s NOT Chinese, on Christmas day?!“ Also, Stinking Rose has FREECORKAGE! That should be an automatic 5 stars! But. But. But. It’s pricey, touristy as heck and gets claustrophobic since there’s a continuous mob waiting to be seated. The savvy local will make a reservation!(or the savvy local will cook Christmas dinner instead …) I took advantage of dining here with my brother and his fiancé for Christmas since we all LOVE garlic(and the bf isn’t around to complain about my gah-lic breath!) They both loved the ambiance of the restaurant with candlewax décor on the tables, fun wallpaper depicting garlic bulbs, big booths for groups and super fun staff(birthday girl next to us had to wear a garlic bulb hat and sang«Happy Birthday Little Stinker!») The food is surprisingly decent! Whether you get the bagna calda which comes as a skillet full of garlic cloves swimming in EVOO, ready to be spread onto the housemade focaccia bread. Or the roasted mussels and shrimp served with a generous amount of garlic cloves. Or MMMeatballzzz that’s just bursting with garlic flavor even if it’s covered in tomato sauce. YUM. For the healthnut in your party, the grilled portabello atop steamed veggies is the most boring thing you can order from the menu. And it’s sure to be there since it doesn’t look like this restaurant changes their menu unlike a lot of SF restaurants. Even my garlic aficionados agreed that we should skip the garlic ice cream for dessert and indulge on a super size me old fashioned sundae instead. Vanilla ice cream, Ghirardelli chocolate fudge, peanuts and whipped cream. It was a very good palette cleanser! Bring extra strong Altoids or refrain from kissing after the meal because the Stinking Rose definitely lives up to its name.

Everything goes well with garlic! Add a charming spot with wine corks hanging and candlelit wax located at the center of each table, this place is a great dining spot! They have attentive staffing. One can bring your own wine bottle and they don’t charge a corkage fee. I didn’t know that until I came here with a wine bottle from Canada that I wanted to pop open. I was pleasantly surprised and loved it. You must order their mussels. It is grilled and steamed up in garlic and buttery goodness. Their lamb shank was of generous proportions. When it comes to garlic, I prefer it stirred up with sizzling seafood flavor. The Stinking Rose is not only a staple restaurant in San Francisco, but also an attractive garlic, love affair.(Note: bring if you are comfortable with the taste of garlic over a dining date.)

I came here for my roommate’s birthday. We ordered the«bagna calda» which is garlic baked with olive oil. That was a really good way to start the meal. The bite from the garlic was toned down due to the oil, and soft enough to spread on the rolls that come with the meal. For dinner, I ordered pasta with fresh tomatoes. It looked small, but it was really filling! The pasta was really flavorful, and I kicked it up a notch by adding the garlic from the bagna calda to it. I’ve never had garlic ice cream, so I knew I had to order it for dessert. It’s one of those things you have to try. I can’t describe the taste. it’s sweet but still savory. The major problem I had was that it had a hair in it. The waiter, who was friendly and attentive throughout the entire meal, took it away quickly and comped it. The Stinking Rose is one of those kitschy, touristy places that you have to check out just to say you did. If anything, the bagna calda is worth it.

I came here for my company’s holiday party dinner. Everywhere was filled with garlic and had a lot of character. This restaurant is very San Francisco and has been around forever. We started with the Bagna Calda which was very good, I think it is one of my favorite. Then we had the salad, nothing special at all. I ordered the lamb for my entrée and it came with mash potatoes and creamed spinach. I think I enjoyed eating the mash potatoes and spinach more than the lamb. The lamb it was very big, so good portions, but it was pretty dry for my taste and tasted very mediocre. Dessert was tiramisu, it was okay, too sweet in my opinion. In all honestly, if you come here make sure your body can handle garlic, because some of my co workers and I didn’t feel so well the next day :(

I’m glad we tried this place, but not sure I’ll be back. The popularity and attraction were a big deciding factor in choosing it. We were greeted very friendly by the host and were taken to a table under canopies. Soft plain bread was brought to our table along with a delicious garlic dip. A mix of raw garlic and herbs. It’s sooo strong! If you like garlic, you’ll love this! We lived it! Warming the bread rolls would take this up a notch. Meals are on the pricier side and big portions, so we decided to split a meal and add a extra side. We had the salmon with sautéed cherry tomatoes, garlic and kalamata olives. It comes with a generous portion of a tasty pasta. The salmon was just okay. A little undercooked in the center for my liking. The extra side of steamed veggies was tasty, but could use a bit more seasoning– maybe pepper? The service was prompt. I’m glad we tried it. Now we know.

Over 20 years ago, I visited this place for the first time. It was amazing garlic heaven! I recently re-visited to celebrate a birthday. It was a great choice. Big roomy booths, a menu with something for everyone, a full bar, and servers who are more than happy to throw the garlic hat onto the Birthday person’s head and sing«Happy Birthday Little Stinker!» I enjoyed the Short Rib, Creamed Spinach, and Garlic Mashed potato. I also had the roasted garlic in oil. I closed my dinner with a lovely cappuccino and 3 desserts. Yes, I had 3 desserts — of course one was a garlic ice cream sundae made with their famous garlic ice cream. Ah — worth noting: I wish the menu wasn’t the same as it’s always been. I could have short rib anywhere in the city. I could go to The Old Clamhouse or Bobo’s for crab. I wish the menu had different garlic drenched entrée options that would truly make dining here memorable. Aside from that, I like the original interior, the friendly, helpful servers, and the overall positive vibe of this restaurant! Take your tourist friends here — it is a San Francisco gem. Just make sure they aren’t vampires… or someone you want to smooch intensely later. Unless you’re into garlicky post-dinner kisses, then by all means, smooch away!

Get ready to get sucker punched in the face… by garlic that is. Doesn’t matter how hard you train or what techniques or strategies you may have; mints, gum, breath fresheners, fruit candy… even Listerine isn’t strong enough to combat the stench of The Stinking Rose. You WILL get beat down by the garlic bulb. As a genuine and avid garlic lover, I can honestly say that this restaurant is not for the faint of hearts. Immediately upon sitting down, we were served some complimentary bread alongside a minced garlic/herb and olive oil blend. When I initially tasted the olive oil, holy crap, I felt my sinuses open completely. This garlic preparation had more of a strong, raw flavor. Instantly I knew this place ain’t playin’. Now on to the main event: Round 1, the Bagna Calda came out swinging, throwing haymakers. Loaded with tons of roasted garlic bathing and drunken in olive oil. Luscious enough to spread over a piece of bread, and for the daring to eat on its own. Round 2, the Garlic Meatball appetizer was tasty indeed! The garlic wasn’t as pungent due to masking of the marinara sauce. Now I understand the concept of being dipped in tomato sauce after being sprayed by a skunk. It really kills the stench. *with this course, I was able to bob and weave with some fancy footwork* Round 3, the Garlic Whole Crab came ferocious and clawed its way back. Pieces of roasted whole garlic somehow infused itself into the crab. The crab meat remained moist and delicate, while retaining the robust garlicky flavor. Round 4 with now one eye swollen shut and a fighting spirit still left in me, I was served the 40 Clove Garlic Chicken. It was served as a half chicken with lightly crisp skin, with garlic gravy poured atop. On the one side of the chicken was dense garlic mashed potatoes, and on the other side, glorious mounds of whole roasted garlic piled at least two inches high. Hot damn. That was a combo. Two to the body, one to the head. Round 5, the Garlic Prime Rib. At this point, my vision was blurred and I was wobbling on my feet. Oh no, but I shan’t give up. I shan’t! So I go charging in, swinging blindly in desperation. It was a thick cut prime rib accompanied with an au jus and horse radish sauce with roasted whole garlic slewed over top. Sides included garlic mashed potatoes, garlic creamed spinach, and more and more garlic. I went down twice in this round, but managed to crawl back to my corner. Final Round, the Garlic Ice Cream. Most people would accurately describe this dessert as funky in flavor. The base is vanilla ice cream with wee bits of garlic churned throughout, topped with a chocolate sauce. While this dessert can be daunting for some, I actually found it quite cooling and refreshing after a garlic whirlwind dinner. Now being a day after having dinner here, I’m still reeking of garlic. Living up to its name, The Stinking Rose is just that. DINGDINGDINGDING!!! Okay okay okay… You win garlic. You win. KO’d

Although this is considered a tourist spot because of it’s location, I still like it here. :) We always have a good dining experience, good food and service. Fun spot to celebrate a birthday or take out of town friends visiting. PROS: –good service –steak is good, cooked perfect –love their garlic spread for the bread –great for birthdays and they plop a HUGE garlic bulb hat on the birthday person. –lamb shank was tender, fell off the bone –love the tub of garlic soaking in olive oil –Caesar salad –Shrimp dish is good –easy to make reservations via Opentable CONS: –Gets SUPERHOT&STUFFY inside, even though they have multiple fans on –Parking is a pain here because North Beach area is crowded. –Spaghetti lacked flavor, but the meatballs were good –Tiramisu: not a fan of this. tasted weird and not good at all
