The Salvation Army

Decent spot, but its hard to search when you’re the size of a yeti. I can’t hold it against them though. I made out like a bandit on $ 50.

A couple of years ago, I decided to do something good for a change and showed up at this location to help distribute their holiday lunch on Christmas day to people in need. Can I say Christmas? there, Christmas, sue me.
Anyway, the gig goes like this: you’re in a team of two, and are given a list of names, with addresses, and a box of meals to deliver. OK, no biggie. Of course, you get to go to some cool parts of town. We got the Loin. And let me tell you, there is nothing tender about that hood.
We saw some crazy stuff that day. You know the corners and places where you see folks shooting up on the sidewalk, fighting, screaming, pulling knives at each other on any random day? yeah, OK. Well, we had to go into those buildings and hand deliver a meal to folks *living* in these «hotels» or whatever they actually are called.
I was paired with a girl I had met at the Salvation Army that morning and let’s just say that more than once we stared at each other like «what the effff are we doing here, let’s keep our back against the wall, just in case».
It makes you realize how lucky we all are (yes, you too). I highly recommend this as a reality check once in a while.
