I’m not a animé fan but I do like modern art and things with LOTS of bold colors and I enjoyed this exhibit quite a bit. For the record I have a graphics design background –among other things so feel qualified to speak on use of color and the artists use of color was VERY interesting. Sure it’s not the largest art exhibit I’ve seen but it was very interesting peek into a subculture I am only cursorily familiar with and I enjoyed it. I wouldn’t go to the city just to see an exhibit here — but paired with other activities in Japantown I think it can be part of a pleasant way to spend the day or afternoon! It’s more the size of a small private gallery so I would maybe pair it with a film either in their theater(if you are into modern Japanese cinema) or over at the Kabuki if you are more like me and into not having to read subtitles and/or a meal at any of the 3.5 or above star rated restaurants on Unilocal

This gallery is on the top floor of NEWPEOPLE. First exhibit: «Best known for his character designs for Final Fantasy, Yoshitaka Amano…» ok if that doesn’t hook ya, I can’t help you. This exhibit did indeed consist of entirely Amano works, which were not like his FF designs, but rather retro references to Gatcha-man. Which is awesome. Less awesome is how SUPERFROG will only let in a few people at a time. I guess they do this to make sure the art is safe, or perhaps to maintain a museum-like experience. We didn’t have to wait, but the potential for waiting is present. Not that you’d be bored; I mean you are in the middle of a Japanese mall.
