I was visiting SF with family from southern CA and we were craving sushi after shopping at the Union Square. This place is a bit on the pricey side and portions were small compared to what we are used to… Our server was attentive, but never smiled, she almost looked angry. Maybe she was having a bad day.

Ok, finding a sushi spot around this area at 3 was a little challenging as most places close at 3. This was the only place open so we decided to dine in. Staff — great, our waiter(Linda) has been working here for 20 years so you know things are going good! She was very attentive, allowed us to go off the menu and when she saw a man smoking outside near our window, she quickly asked him to smoke a little further down the road so that the smoke wouldn’t come in. We overheard its been the same owner for 26 years! Food — really good and«bang for your buck» as its quality sushi reasonably priced. Ambiance — open and bright, not dark. Good for couples and family. Happy Eatings!

This place is great!.. The sushi melts in your mouth. So fresh and so good! They have eggplant sushi too… Have you ever seen this offered before? I haven’t. and seriously, it’s so delicious. I had to order a second order of it — yum! The service is quick. Book a reservation or else you likely won’t get in. Enjoy!

Got really lucky finding this gem. A real neighborhood feel in the heart of Union Square. The service was excellent and food great. Really reasonable prices especially for the quality of sushi. Also the recent perfect health inspection score posted on Unilocal was very much appreciated. I had a variety of sushi. More than any human should consume in a mean and it was all excellent!

came for lunch and sat at the sushi bar. Next to me was also a single diner who spoke in japanese with the chefs the entire time. Made me feel like i was in japan :) to eat, i had the sashimi lunch which came with 12 pieces of sashimi, a salad, miso soup and a bowl of sushi rice. The salad and miso soup were meh, but the sashimi was super fresh. I believe it came with octopus, salmon, tuna, mackerel and yellowtail. They also have a pretty extensive list of fish that you can order a la cart. I would recommend trying that next time. Overall, a satisfying sushi lunch!

Not the best sushi we’ve ever had… Good service though! The nigiri was decent but not that flavorful(we had maguro, negitoro, sake, and a special). The rolls were good but not my favorite(Dynamite special and crunch roll). Definitely not worth the $ 95 that I spent. All around just an okay experience.

Came here with my friend for lunch on a weekday. They have lunch specials, I got the special for a spicy tuna roll plus a sashimi salad. I was severely disappointed by the amount of fish that was present within the salad. I was hoping for a more full, sashimi filled salad, rather than 4 piece of fish and some greens. The service was okay, nothing that I would die to go back to again. The place was pretty hot during the lunch hour, I felt like there was no air conditioning. Casual restaurant, but price is not so casual. Nothing tasted bad per say but it was more of the portion and cost. There are plenty of nice sushi restaurants at the same price point, with either better sushi, more heavier in size. I would recommend elephant sushi in a heart beat, if you were looking for some good sushi in the area. I would not suggest driving here as traffic, parking etc. is not worth it.

Good service. Not the best in SF area, but reasonable price. The sushi rolls are small and sashimi are decent, not super fresh tasting. Love the uni plate! yumm… Come here to get your sushi fix if you prefer less wait like other sushi restaurants nearby.

Walking 10 min from Union Square, we arrived in this restaurant after 2pm. The general lunch time was over, but almost all of the table were filled with customers. I am a sushi lover but I have not been able to get a good one in MN. Therefore i was really looking forward to have a nice sushi. My boyfriend and I ordered; Sushi delux 704roll Ikura nigiri Uni nigiri(x2) Sparkling wine Sushi delux included 10kinds of nigiri and California roll, salad, and miso soup. We can not choose which nigiri would be included, but almost all of them were good. One nigiri, it looked like some kind of squid or aomething, I couldn’t tell, was not good. I don’t know what was it… The California roll was the simple roll but very tasty. We agreeded that their rice has very good taste and quality. The 704roll was interesting roll. The fried shrimp, cucumbers were in the roll, and salmon and avocado were in the top of the roll. It was gorgeous flavor. Overall, I liked this place, and their sushi very much. It’s pricey but it worth to pay.

Full disclosure, I only came here after seeing the massive wait for Ryoko’s, which is just a block away. It was a full house at 9 pm on a Thursday, but we didn’t have to wait for seats so I was already happy with Sanraku. Everything was fresh, came out relatively quickly, and fish-to-rice ratio was perfect – can’t really ask for more! Five rolls, nigiri, beer, sake(w tax and tip) ~$ 65 I may have a bias towards this place because we sat at the bar next to three very legit-looking Japanese business men having the time of their lives with hella sashimi and bottle after bottle of sake. Ambiance, 10 out of 10. Probably the closest thing to authentic I can get for a while.

We were starvin upon arrival so everything may have seemed better than my poor ol memory will allow. This place is prob no larger than the size of a prison cell. At 5’2″ I felt like I was able to reach the ceiling and big enough that I was side swipin’ tables as we walked in and out of this petite joint. «The worst thing about prison was — was the Dementors.» –Michael Scott I may have a shaky point of reference for their food but at least I can assure you that this is just your average soosh stop. A lot of the items pictured on Unilocal couldn’t be found on the menu though and our waitress was weakkkkk on the english so we couldn’t/didn’t wanna waste too much time asking questions. Number one priority at the time was to get food –any edible food– in bellies. Lunch specials were a decent deal at about 15 $ for a full bento set. Chirashi w brown rice rolled in at about 26 $ but the fish was fresh so at least there’s that. If I stayed in another neighboring hotel, I’d entertain the idea of coming back but I’ll note that the walk back from this place from the Hilton is somewhat terrible in heels. Ouchie — far too toe smashing.

My review teeters somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars. Not the best sushi or the most ample portions I have ever had, but not bad. The service was great and quick. The fish was definitely fresh, but it lacked that certain something that makes me want to give 5 stars. We sat at a table. I order salmon, yellow tail and a soft she’ll crab roll. My son got the Unagi bowl. He loved his. My sushi was okay, but the soft she’ll crab roll was blah. Not awful, but nothing spectacular either, especially at the price they charged(I realize I’m in SF but 90 for he amount of food we had is just crazy). I’m glad I went, but I wouldn’t be begging to go back.

I love this place! The fish is so fresh and service is great. They were kind enough to squeeze in a last minute reservation for 6. Very casual restaurant, not really trendy or modern. Sanraku is one of those restaurants you go for the food and company, rather than the ambiance. You really can’t go wrong with their sashimi, nigiri and rolls. They also offer non sushi items for those who can’t eat raw fish. Portions are balanced. They don’t overload their rolls with rice. My go-to items are their sashimi deluxe platter, spicy rolls and toro nigiri. Their toro is one of the fattiest toros I’ve had in the city.

So average and pretty pricey for what it is. I have no idea why they have 4 stars on Unilocal. My bf and I ordered the Unagi donburi and Nabeyaki udon. The Unagi was a huge disappointment. For $ 22 I expected so much more. It was just 4 slices of mediocre tasting eel with rice. The eel was a bit dry and the sauce/glaze was lacking in flavor. The udon was a bit better. For one, it was more filing than the donburi and actually had more stuff. It came with one piece of shrimp tempura, an egg, spinach, seaweed, and fishcake. That said for $ 15 you should just go elsewhere in japantown. The broth here was a bit too salty. Overall I wouldn’t come back and am genuinely surprised at how busy the restaurant was.

Headed to a show at the Masonic means dinner in the City! Craving sushi, Unilocal led us here. I read some really discerning reviews from some trusted Unilocal friends, but mostly about lack of value and service and with the understanding that in this area, I’m going to be dropping coin regardless, we made the rez. First of all, do make a rez on the weekends. This place was packed and it’s pretty big. Ambiance is that sort of regular, casual sushi restaurant. Nothing cray. We opted for a seasonal special roll with fatty tuna, a sashimi deluxe and a bowl of edamame. Hungry, but not starving, we felt that to be enough. Edamame($ 5) was small, but not horrible. The fatty tuna special roll at about $ 15 was definitely over priced. A delicious roll, but just a very thin shaving of fish on top. The sashimi deluxe was fresh and the fish was delicious, but nothing interesting. It consisted of your usual suspects: tuna, salmon etc… Priced at $ 33, which I guess isn’t horrible for the ‘hood, it was good. It did come with a side bowl of sushi rice. We ended up ordering one more roll: the rainbow roll. Again, another let down. Stuffed with a fake crab meat salad, with a thin shaving of fish on top; it was a little sloppily made and a little meager. Most rainbow rolls are so big you can’t even get your mouth around it and that wasn’t the case here. Nothing was bad, just overpriced and pretty regular. I get it, it’s the hood. But, I still think you can wow your customers regardless of price.

HOTDAMN, this place is great. I came in here with my friend a few days ago and was seated immediately. We had the most wonderful waitress, Linda, who had been there for twenty years and you could clearly tell that she both loved her job and the food that they were serving. She came with such incredible suggestions and kept smiling throughout. She was an absolute delight. The food itself was absolutely fantastic — we took the grilled squid which came in a wonderful teriyaki sauce and spicy mayo. The squid was not chewy in a bad way and incredibly fresh and flavorful. For the sushi, we went for the spicy jalapeño roll which was fine — the real hero of this meal was the seasonal sushi with only the fresh stuff — absolutely wonderful. This place is definitely recommended and would get 4 stars for the food — an extra star for Linda who was wonderful throughout.

Food quality — 5⁄5 Service — 4⁄5 Pricing — 4⁄5 — a bit pricey, but worth it Menu selection — 5⁄5 — lots of seasonal fish(from both Japan and US) options Ambiance — 4⁄5 — cozy, bright, and clean Overall — 4⁄5 — will be back next time I’m in the area :) Make a reservation! There was a line out the door. Of the things we tried, these were the highlights: — Sakura Sushi Platter($ 48) — if you’re willing to splurge, GETTHIS! The nigiri sushi are all seasonal fish(which goes for $ 10−12÷2 pieces if ordered a la carte). That being said, this combo is definitely worth it. The blue fin tuna roll sounds so basic, but it is probably the BEST tuna roll I’ve had. — Hokkaido Roll($ 15) — the scallops and cod roe were super fresh. Everything about this roll is 5⁄5. They also let me sub the cream cheese for avocado at no additional cost. — Hotate Kani Yaki($ 12 for 3 pcs) — broiled, crispy scallop topped with spicy REAL snow crab. Amazing. –And for dessert. Kinaki Mochi w Green Tea Ice Cream($ 6.50) — ~6 pieces of chewy rice mochi covered with an almond-y crust. SOOO amazing, and definitely worth the $ 6.50. This mochi is not the same as the ice cream mochi.

Came here and got their sushi lovers platter as well as their Chicken Udon. Their sushi lovers platter was pretty standard in terms of taste but unfortunately, it was really expensive for what it was. For 6 pieces of nigiri and a roll of imitation crab, I think it was $ 23. Also, I got the chicken udon whose noodles were really soggy and the grilled chicken was really really dry. For $ 15, I expected a lot more.

Make a reservation before you come! We got seated shortly after, but they will prioritize you if u have reservations unlike other places. Appetizer: we ordered agadashi tofu. Not the best I’ve had. There were fish and radish shavings to add flavor to the tofu itself, but the tofu lacked flavor. It tasted much better when drenching the tofu through the broth to get more flavor into the tofu. Udon: ordered tempura udon. What a disappointment. Broth tasted like straight up packaged ramen noodle broth– shin ramen soup to be exact. Noodles were undercooked and chewy:/ Rolls: rainbow roll: my husband enjoyed this roll– he said the fish was melting in his mouth– ESP the tuna. The spicy trio roll was veryyyy flavorful bc of the jalapeño that it was topped with. Soo salty u don’t even need to dip it in soy sauce. Service: very quick!

SERVICE. Like many Asian restaurants in the city, the service here is lacking. I’ve visited Sanraku 3 times now. The first two times were ok. This last time, however, had me thinking twice. The waiter was pretty blunt and did not make an effort to treat us like dinner guests. While we were deciding on our sushi order, he stood there anxiously which, in turn, made me feel pressured to order something just for the sake of letting him leave. FOOD. If you don’t know what to order, get your grub on with a combination dinner. For your first item, order some type of sushi, and for the second item, try their sesame chicken. It’s lightly fried and glazed with a sweet/savory teriyaki-like sauce. What I was most impressed with was the quality of the chicken pieces themselves. FULLCHUNKS of chicken. Yum. Also, take a moment to appreciate their miso soup and side salad that comes with the meal. The salad is dressed with some sort of sesame/ponzu/ginger wonder sauce. I don’t know what it is exactly, but you gotta have it. You need it. Boom. You’re welcome. ATMOSPHERE. You ever walk into a restaurant you were really excited to try, and the moment you step in you’re welcomed with the seducing scent of musty, warm bodies? Yeah, that’s the stuff! Jokes aside, this part was kind of a let down. It’s an easy fix for this small restaurant. Get better ventilation. Or maybe body odor is the secret to their tenderly moist sushi. Hm. Food for thought.

We remembered this restaurant from the trip to SF two years ago. We just happend to stumble on this place as it looked busy. We made an effort this time to find this restaurant again during the trip although we couldn’t remember the name of the place. It is such a busy place with a good vibe. The seating wasn’t particularly attractive and the lighting might be a little too bright for intimacy, however that’s how we like it — a very causual and authentic sushi bar. We had so many sushi, we enjoyed every piece. I personally loved the uni and awabi the most, uni was so sweet and fresh. We saw the sushi chef prepared some interesting dishes for other customers which were not on the menu, so a tip is to sit at the sushi bar if you dont know what to order. We also liked the fact that the chef was able to prepare the sushi in the way you like, for example, we always enjoyed anago without silly bbq sauce so we could taste the fish itself, a good sushi chef should always be able to accommodate. This place is not cheap if you are after sushi and sashimi rather than big California rolls, but it’s really worth it.

Sushi has been my go-to comfort food of 2016. The year has just begun and I have already manifested countless different local sushi deliveries — since the beginning of January. Mixing in pastel green wasabi and beige ginger into a dark pool of coconut aminos sauce(I replace out the soy sauce) — my smile broadens as I grasp a beautifully bound sushi piece — bursting with vibrant pink hued salmon and crunchy greens and plunge it into the hazy sea of sodium. Sanraku’s sushi isn’t mind-blowing. It’s decent sushi with solid hours. In my two recent encounters with Sanraku’s sushi delivery — I’ve found their fish to be fresh, I’ve found their rolls to be well constructed, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised to discover that they don’t use a ton of sushi rice in their rolls. Today I ordered their 704 Roll, their 49ers roll and their Spider Roll. The 704 Roll was great with shrimp tempura, salmon, avocado, cucumber, and jalapeño. The salmon was buttery and the jalapeño left a bold zing afterwards. The 49ers roll was refreshing with tender salmon, avocado, tobiko, cucumber, and a zesty kiss of lemon. The Spider Roll was probably my least favorite roll. The fried crab tasted off and the tempura batter was overpowering. There are far too many exceptional sushi spots in the city to make Sanraku a destination sushi spot. But if you live nearby or are interested in some early afternoon sushi delivery — I recommend reading up on their popular menu items and manifesting some of your own comfort rolls. Trust.

I was not super impressed by this place. The bf and I came here around 8 and were able to snag the last open table. Ordered a bunch of things off the menu including the sashimi sampler(15pc), chawanmushi, sunomono, oyster shooters, and uni. The sashimi sampler was all right, tuna and albacore were off that day. The salmon and hamachi were good tho. Oyster shooters were just okay too, nothing special. Sunomono, which is a sliced cucumber salad, was the best thing of the night, other than the uni. The Saba and take that came with the sunomono was perfect, although I did wish there were more sliced cucumbers. The chawanmushi, I wish I didn’t get. It was my first time having it, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was literally an egg custard with some seafood on the bottom. Service was pretty good, we were checked up on pretty often. Ps. The place is pretty cramped! At least the side near the sushi bar was

4 stars because of price. We were — almost full –leaving at $ 50 a person. Definitely make a reservation — we were seated right away and there was a huge line outside. We stuck to the sushi rolls and got 8 different kinds. All of them were $ 15 each for 6 pieces. We got 2 from the special menu and 6 from the original menu. The crunch roll and 704 roll were my favorites. The rainbow roll was also one of the freshest rainbow rolls I’ve had. We also got the spider roll, dragon roll, and tiger roll(actually this was a favorite too!). The food was delicious. We ordered three desserts — the crème brûlée, the mochi dessert that takes 10 mins to prepare, and the pudding with mochi ice cream which is essentially flan. The mochi dessert was really unique and the beat out of 3. The flan was perfectly prepared. And the crème brûlée could use some extra love. We ordered two bottles of nigori sake. It was so smooth and creamy. Didn’t see it on the menu but has asked our waitress for a smaller bottle of cold nigori sake and she brought it from the back :) Overall, tiny cute restaurant with great sushi. Service is good. No waiting with reservation. Took a star away because the prices could be lower.

Stopped by here for lunch and they weren’t busy! It was amazing. Since I’ve moved out here to the Bay Area, I’ve really wanted to try this place. The place is bigger than I imagine so great for lunch. One really nice thing is they have lunchbox for $ 12.50. In addition they have a daily special lunchbox which I think is the winner here. I went on a Tuesday and it was Sashimi Salad with a spicy roll. The fish was of great quality, beautifully played, and it was filling, but light for a salad. You can order nigiri which is around 8 – 12 dollars and you can add a quail egg for a dollar. I didn’t get to try this but can’t wait to next time. Service is good. The only thing I would keep in mind is that the pricing for rolls is around $ 15. It’s great quality but if you were expecting more for the money, this isn’t the place.

Tetsu, the sushi chef is incredible to watch. Definitely sit at the sushi bar to watch ALL the chefs. They are so intense and quick with the orders. We thoroughly enjoyed watching them with their craft of sushi making. We ordered the Chef’s SANRAKU suggestion platter. It had 8 pieces, mostly raw. The fish was fresh, fatty, and flavorful, the way we like it. We ordered a few rolls on the side as well. I think the next time I go, I’d order nigri or the other raw specials. It’s a fun place. You must make reservations though! The oysters were too small and«ocean-y» — I probably wouldn’t order those again, but 2 thumbs up on everything else.

This is one of those places that deceives you if you only pay attention to the star rating instead of reading the reviews from other Unilocal elites! My friends and I decided to go here after a Dragon Boat race in Treasure Island because the ratings were good and it was right off the bridge. The moment we walked in, it looked like a mediocre sushi spot which is actually doesn’t look that great for SF standards. Besides looks, we checked out the menu and instantly noticed that each roll was $ 13-$ 16. Wow! Alright maybe prices are just inflated because it’s a restaurant in SF. I ordered the Tonkatsu($ 16) which is a Fried Pork cutlet with rice and a Spider Roll($ 13). The spider roll came first, and it literally came with like 6 small pieces. Yes 6 tiny pieces for $ 13…I was starting to feel glad that I ordered the Tonkatsu since it was a dinner meal, but once it arrived, I don’t think i have ever seen such a thin sad piece of fried pork in my life. Not only was the pork super dry, it was just not filling at all even with all of the rice! Thankfully our friend ordered 4 rolls to share with all of us since we did not think it was worth it to pay $ 13+ for 6 pieces per roll. It was quite funny when the couple next to us saw our first rolls come in because I overheard them asking each other if they should order more because they didn’t expect the rolls to be so small and not worth it. Once my friends platter of 4 rolls came in, they asked the waitress to order a few more rolls like us since they knew they would be as hungry as us haha! Just proves that nothing is worth it here. Food portions is almost nonexistent, taste is subpar, and price is outrageous. Also the service takes some time and the ambiance is far from SF standards. Sorry Sanraku, but I was definitely not impressed with anything and will not be returning.

Hammer! Hingehen!

My friends and I decided to come eat here after our 1st day of racing at the 20th Annual San Francisco Kaiser Permanente Dragon Boat Festival in Treasure Island. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting a lot based off of the overall stars this place had and the number of reviews it held as well. This was because I had already read a few handful of reviews from my other Unilocal friends and most of them gave this place a 2⁄3 stars out of 5. I decided to give this place a chance though. Sad to say… I gave this place a chance and it disappointed me greatly. I will definitely not be coming back to this place at all and I would not recommend this place to be a good sushi joint. Sowwies. Sanraku, your portions are extremely small… I can probably shove 4 of your rolls in one bite with how big my mouth is and how much I can eat. And the pricing for your dishes can make my wallet go broke within a few hours :( My boyfriend and I ordered the Sesame Chicken dish and it was not satisfying. The plate ended up to be about $ 16 and it only had about 9 pieces of chicken on there with a few veggies and a small bowl of rice. I was very disappointed because the chicken wasn’t even worth $ 16…it felt like it came from a bag of frozen chicken to be honest. My other friend ordered their Chicken Katsu dish and I had a bite of the Katsu and it wasn’t that special at all. My other other friend ordered 4 different rolls and they weren’t that special either. Decent rolls, but very very small for the price they give you. Service I can say was MEH. They didn’t really check up on our table and they never offered us water at all. I believed we had to call them back a few times to fill up our waters and ask for more napkins. Sorry Sanraku, but I won’t be coming back at all :( Overall: 1.5 stars (I ended up going home to eat a FULLDINNER…)
