I have been a customer of Mark’s for almost 15 years and he has never disappointed me with one of his cuts. I recently relocated back to the Bay Area this past year but have been traveling to see him over the years… he is that good. He is a true artist and has a talent for styling cuts that are custom tailored to the texture of your hair and your face /​bone structure. My hair is very curly and thick and over the years Mark has helped me transition my hair from super short (at one point cutting off eight inches), to super long hair that reached almost halfway down my back. He can really do it all and he is an amazing stylist. One phase he likes to use I believe sums up his whole philosophy: «single hair perfection». Voila un artiste!

My first visit with Mark I discussed my goals of getting my hair down to my waist, but I wanted it thick and healthy with a lot of shape and style. Can it be done? He claimed at the time it would be no problem and would help me grow my hair.
Regular haircuts with him for only the last five months and I have already increased my length by several inches and my hair looks amazing! Mark really knows how to cut hair to grow it out, and he not only loves to do it, he also encourages many ways to keep your hair healthy! Regular cuts are the start and he will educate with ideas to keep your hair beautiful between appointments!

I never thought I would be one of those people who say, «I only trust my hair to…» until I started going to Mark.

It’s really that simple. But I’ll elaborate. I’ve been going to Mark for years. But prior to him I had bad haircut after bad haircut. I have wavy hair. which is the worst. not straight and not curly. This netherworld of annoyance. I never thought i could have a cut where I didn’t have to do anything to it. Until I met Mark. It’s easy to make a client look good when they leave the salon. It’s hard to make a client look good each and every day between cuts. And that’s what Mark does. He, unlike many stylists out there, actually knows how to cut hair. And well! Mark knows my hair, how it will behave and what to do with it. I literally do not style my hair and it’s perfect. I take a shower and just leave it wet. I sleep on it wet. Or I won’t wash it for days. Of course it’s a little different every time. That’s just the nature of hair. But I’m in love with it each time. :) I have super long wavy hair and a ton of layers. No one does layers like him. I’ve had strangers comment on the layers in my hair. My friends say I have mermaid hair. The other fantastic thing about Mark is that he’s realistic. He’ll tell you if the cut you want is not going to work on you. I mean, he can cut anything. but he’ll tell you if you do or don’t have the type of hair that’s going to maintain it. My advice… just let him work his magic.
here’s a sweet closing story to my review…
Directly after my most recent appointment, I had a date. Mark, the gentleman that he is, walks me to my date’s car as he drove up, introduced himself, etc. All night my date kept staring at me saying «fuck yeah, Mark,» «wow, Mark,» «Mark’s the man». Yay, Mark. :)

Mark Lewis is an incredibly talented visionary of hair. He finds shape and line flawlessly, and executes unbelievable results that last. There is no one like him.

Sanctuary Salon is one of the most amazing salons in the bay area. Mark Lewis is inconceivably an ARTIST of many many genres. Mark has been pampering my locks for over two decades and I always leave incredibly happy and renewed from our visit. His eye for color, depth and dimension in creating the most creatrix hair styles for his clients is unbelievable but totally in his nature. I travel over 160 miles round trip to visit Sanctuary Salon and it’s absolutely an indulgence every time!

Mark has been cutting my hair for over a decade now ever since my (new at the time) wife told me I had to get a real haircut. And she was totally right. Every haircut Mark has given me has been excellent. After the last one I got two prolonged compliments from two friends with 24 hours — which is always nice.
I know a lot of guys think a $ 20 haircut at Supercuts is fine. And some people can’t afford I high quality cut. So maybe Mark isn’t for you. But if you want a consistently great haircut by someone who understand how to personalize a cut for you, then Mark has my strongest recommendation.

I started getting stopped on the street by homeless folks asking if I was a hippie, and how could I blame them. Long unkemp curly lockes, thinning hair, and a scraggly beard became my day to day. So I gave my head over to Mark, and man I forgot that I had a handsome face under all that hair. Pretty amazing what he’s done with my look. Two of the best parts about it is I can style it or leave it as is and my thinning hair looks fuller.
