Price was so low for such a good durian bun. They use real durian so you can still taste the durian flesh. The bun itself was soft and sweet. They should put more durian inside the bun since it looks they only fill in the middle part of the bun. Will try for the other bun as well.

Another review for this place ! My wedding cake turned out AMAZING ! Thank you to my friend who did not stress enough about giving them a picture of how you wanted the cake style so they font decide to do something else helped out! I’m sad that her cake didn’t work out but mines did. The cake was a hit, each person wanted more than 2 slices of cake! The size was pretty good, for a party of 270, there was enough to go around with a three teir cake. I like things simple, so all I had was them to put on my blue ribbon in which you must provide, and they were very accommodating, and letting me know what works and what didn’t. Just make sure that you do return their cake stand or you wont get your deposit back. This place is great to get their cakes! Again if I ever was in the neighborhood I would buy my birthday cakes here, and my pastries for the family, the only thing is no parking and its in the middle the the busiest street in Chinatown.

Very convenient and inexpensive! We got a coconut bun for $ 0.80 and an egg tart for $ 0.90. This beats the prices in Southern California! The place has plenty of seating and I am glad we found this place. We had a good experience here with the friendly staff, so we are thankful. We were also very hungry from all the exploring :)

I eat this kind of cake all through my childhood. So it remind of childhood, and I just love their cake. Light and tasty. Too bad sometime the service you get from there is very rude, but I will get buy cake from this place.

I love, love, love their buns. Whenever I’m in that neighborhood, I buy a boxful. Our family favs are taro, pork floss, durian, and custard. All very reasonably priced too. The customer service is non-existent, but that’s ok with me.

I love their buns, pastries and cakes! My favorite are the Mexican buns, ham and egg, and Ham and pork, yum! Very affordable, less than $ 1 per bun. Their egg tarts are really good and affordable as well! I think 70 cents for an egg tart compared to $ 1 elsewhere. Their lemon cake roll is really good too! And their birthday cakes with fruit are not too sweet and heavy — my family always order cakes from them for special occasions. I come here often and I would definitely recommend this place for cakes, pastries and buns. :)

Cash only. $.80 for an egg tart and so so delicious. Great ratio between custard and crust with such flaky crust. Red bean pineapple bun is OK. The red bean isn’t fully crushed so uneven consistency

Egg tarts are delicious! We had to preorder ours since they were sold out for the time being. Had to wait 30 mins to get our dozen egg tarts. They are definitely larger than the typical ones, but they have a lot of custard in them. Custard is nice and soft while the crust is flaky and crispy. It is a little oily though, probably from all the butter in it, but they’re delicious both right out of the oven or even overnight! At 80 cents a pop, the price really can’t be beat. We also got some pork sung onion buns which were delicious. The bread is super soft(even the next day!!) which was quite surprising for me because most of the time bread hardens a bit. Not theirs! It’s still super soft and doughy. I wish I got to try their durian buns, but I didn’t see them until after it was too late. boo :(. The prices here are pretty cheap too. Staff is nice. Cash only. Not much seating, more of a take out place. Def will be coming back here next time I’m in Chinatown.

It is located in China town. A friend highly recommended the shop. The environment is nice and the waiters are so kind. They offer many kinds of bread and cakes. We ordered egg tarts. I love them so much.

Pretty nice egg tarts — flakey crispy pastry, eggy custard. Maybe not quite as good /buttery as GGB but pretty good still. Plus no lines and better pricing. 80¢ an egg tart, best deal in chinatown, cash only

I ordered egg tart. It is a delicious choice. The egg tart is moderate warm and you can fill the softness of the egg at the bite. The taste of egg and cream linger in mouth all the way to the end and also a good custard consistency. The crispy layers of the flaky crust added more texture. Pineapple bun with red bean is also recommended, I love the top crust — not so sweet but crunchy and tasty. The service is not so organized though. There is no waiting line so to speak. You need to seize the staff to order so they start pay attention to you.

This review is long overdue from me: Mmm not the most perfect bakery that you see in Texas or other parts of the Bay Area but this place is the best when it comes to bread. Do not get the large cakes unless you are secure with what you buy. I like all the bread that they make here it is affordable and can last until you finish everything in the box. Most bread and small item are under $ 1.75 which is good because for a person who rarely takes breaks in or visits Chinatown this is the place to go. It is easy to remember where it is and it isn’t far if you take the notorious #30 or just about any MUNI bus. It would be great if it was in San Jose too but you can’t beat quality. If you are getting a large cake for a special occasion go somewhere else because the cake has been in the selling glasses for IDK how many weeks but the important thing is you should really come here a few times. This one female employee even recognizes my mom or me when we come. Also be quick because the bread and small items sell quick! Drawbacks: they take cash only so be sure to have it in hand when ordering.

Came here to try some egg tarts and hot dog buns. Prices are cheap, only 80 cents each. The employees aren’t super friendly but whatevers. The food was pretty good. I did not like the egg tart though. It was literally falling apart and was soft and soggy. Not even average. The hot dog buns are pretty good though. This is a cash only place.

Cash only. I came here at 4pm to order some pastries for a snack and ended up getting two coconut raisin breads and one pork bun. Neither pastries were the best I’ve ever had, but at $.80, I can’t complain at all. The coconut raisin pastry had enough toppings to cover the entire length of the bread, and while the pork bun was a bit cold(expected), it had a decent amount of filling inside.

They have a bun with a whole chicken nugget patty in the middle!!! And it’s topped with cheese and a ketchup sauce! Probably one of the best things ever invented

First time tried a durian bun and egg tart. Good to try a durian bun at least once. In this case,“Curiosity did not kill the cat.” LOL I am still alive, but durian does stink. I like the egg custard. It was well balanced with the custard and the crust. I would come back to try other buns and egg tarts.

There might not be long lines out the door like another popular Chinese bakery, but Napoleon is often packed with customers clamoring to order delicious buns. Feeling adventurous? Get the durian bun! I was most excited for this at Napoleon’s since it’s rather rare to find. If you’ve never tasted or heard of this infamous fruit, don’t miss out on trying it at Napoleon’s. My boyfriend loves durian, so he’ll describe it as tasty and sweet. I, on the other hand, consider it akin to onions in smell and taste. Be sure to ask for the durian bun to be packaged separately from any other items you order to avoid contaminating other foods with durian’s pungent smell and taste. The pineapple buns here are average. The bun itself is big and fluffy, but the sweet crust topping was lacking. This layer was thinner than that of pineapple buns elsewhere, so it was minimally sweet. Egg tarts here are also average. The filling of egg tarts are usually lightly sweetened, and this one from Napoleon was especially light. Some might find it almost too bland for their tastes, but the custard’s consistency was right and the crust was flaky. The interior is a narrow space with just three small tables and chairs. My boyfriend and I were able to grab a table and two chairs, but it’s definitely more of a grab and go place. If you’re looking for a cheap meal or snack, skip the lines elsewhere and enjoy the buns here!

Let the war begin! Dan tat(custard tarts)( ) is the subject of the great debate in Chinatown these days. The king resides on Grant Avenue at Golden Gate Bakery. The only true way to settle the duel is a side by side taste test… minor problem: GG is closed half of the year, or so it seems. Rumor, a friend’s cousin, reliability unconfirmed, recently heard that GG’s baker now runs Napoleon’s kitchen. This piqued my curiosity so, on a recent Sunday, I picked up a six pack of custard tarts for the family. When I got home, I immediately noticed a huge difference as they were cold. Not refrigerator cold, mind you, but it certainly was not warm and toasty like GG’s. Here alone, the sense of smell being neutralized when cold, Napoleon is a notch below. My friend said the trick is to pop them in the toaster oven and warm them to a flaky crispy texture. Sadly, when your tummy grumbles, there’s no time for that. Came back to pick up a ham & egg bun, but they were out; instead, I got a ham and tomato bun( ) which was interesting but can do without the mayo. I also picked up some Gai Mei Bao(Chicken tail bun)( ), which does not contain any chicken in it… so, don’t be afraid. Like the coconut filling, but sadly it wasn’t spread evenly and was mostly on one side of the bread. There are two tables at the window for dine-in, but their mostly occupied by regular customers which include retirees and plumbers(you know who you are). Overall, it’s disappointing that their offering were mostly cold as nothing beats fresh bake. For me, it’s just okay here.

Their egg tarts tastes sooo much better than the famous Golden Gate Bakery! I’m not a fan of Chinese cakes but these cakes are cheap for the office.

Ugh! Don’t make the mooncake pastries here… I tried the«pig cookie» and it was disgusting! There was no filling and the the flour was stale and bad… be careful! Egg tarts have gone down in quality. They used to be my alternative to Golden Gate Bakery. Not anymore…
